 Engine Cover Removal--BX2350

I would like to remove the engine cover on BX2350. Operator's Manual gives some details, but does not cover the situation when a 3 rung brush guard is installed on the front of the chasis (I suspect the brush guard is part of the FEL package).

It looks like I must remove the brush guard to remove the engine cover. Guard is bolted to frame with four decent sized bolts. Do I need to replace the brush guard/is brush guard really necessary?

Is there an easier way to remove the engine cover than removing the brush guard?

Suggestions would be appreciated.

You might be able to remove the two front hinges and lift stright up. But it's a two-man job, and there might be an under-hood electric plug you'll have to disconnect.

Mine came with a guard -- that had to be removed for the loader!

Auerbach--

Appreciate the response. I won't be able to lift straight up because the knob bolts securing the engine cover to to the tractor are threaded through a 1 1/2 inch long flange on each side. I must slide the cover forward in order to clear the flanges. My problem is that the brush guard that is bolted to the front frame of the tractor prevents me from sliding the engine cover forward, thereby allowing me to remove the cover. Is there a better way to remove the engine cover without first removing the brush guard?

If Itake the brush guard off, do I need to re-install it after replacing the engine cover--does the brush guard peform a useful function?

Comments appreciated.

Brush guards protect the front of the tractor from brush and also from stuff (like pieces of firewood, rocks, etc) falling rearward out of the bucket. They aren't necessary but you need to weigh the risk and expense of repairing any damage. They also aren't foolproof, they won't protect from hitting a branch straight on or stuff falling out of the bucket onto the hood when the loader is raised high.

Also, most people who have a FEL at some point or another use it to lift something heavy like an implement.

I promise you, if you do that, it WILL swing and bump that guard, at that moment, you will be VERY happy it's there between the load and your sheet metal.

Best of luck.

bobkro,
On my BX2230, the model previous to yours, the engine cover comes off without removing that brush guard. I lift the hood, unbolt the cover and disconnect the headlight wires, then close the hood but don't latch it. Now there is enough room to slide the cover forward until it hits the grill guard, then spread is slightly and raise it off. It takes some fiddling and would be easier with one person on either side of the tractor, but I've managed it by myself a few times. Once to replace the headlights. (I still swear that log jumped right out of the brush pile and into my headlight!)
Hope that helps with your machine.
David

Murf and S Chrand--

Thanks for the advice on engine cover removal, and Murf's advice to put the brush gruard back on!!! You are correct, I have used the FEL to move a rotary tiller (400 pounds of useful steel) a couple of times but, thankfully, it did not bang into the tractor. However, I agree that at some place/time "Murphy's Law" (no offense, pls) will strike.

Tks again.
