 Priming Injector Pump - B7100

Well, I've been enjoying my "new" B7100 HST E, but I guess I shoulda ordered that owners manual. I ran my deisel tractor out of fuel.

I was hoping the fact that the fuel tank gravity feeds into the filter would allow for an easier way, but it just won't restart and I suspect I'll have to prime the thing. But how?

My old Peugeot wagon had a little priming pump, but I don't see anything like that on this machine. I imagine there could be a bleed screw somewhere, but I haven't found it, or at least nothing obvious.

So, is it necessary to prime the fuel system after running it dry. If so, how do I do it?

Thanks in advance.
___Mike

Don't feel bad---I do it more than I should admit to. On my New Holland tractor and skid steer I have found that cranking the engine a several times is all it takes. Now my Cummins Dodge is a different story. You have to cycle the ignition switch about 20 times according to the manual. But I have found that slightly pressurizing the fuel tank with compressed air will make it fire up almost immediately. Back to your question though, there is usually a bleeder screw or bolt on the filter housing. Open that up and blow into the tank if you can (I've also used a shop vac on the blowingd to do this when my fuel line froze up) to see if your filter is clogged if nothing comes out the bleeder. Shoot--check the filter anyway since you're there.

Boy! Of all times for my trail membership to expire. I couldn't read your entire message.

Hopefully I got the gist of what you were saying, i.e. that I should find a bleed screw somewhere on the filter and that I'd do well to pressurize the fuel tank to speed the process. Sounds good to me, I'll try it in the morning.

Many thanks.
__Mike

According to the owners manual for my L3400 there should be an air vent cock on the fuel injection pump.
It says to open it, then start engine and run for 30 seconds, then stop the engine and close the air vent cock.
I don't know if yours would be the same.

Good Luck
Dwight

First, open the bleed screw on the fuel filter till gravity feeds pure fuel, then close. (10mm nut looking thing on top of filter)

Next open bleed scres on fuel injection pump, crank engine till fuel flows, (10mm nut looking thing on pump)

next loosen each injector line, one at a time, crank till fuel flows, tighten..

wipe off any fuel on engine, preheat plugs and start...

rwatson nailed it. Verbatim what the manual called for on my L245 after I changed the fuel filter and it did not start.

one more point, when you finish for the day top off the tank, keeps from forgetting you were almost empty when you quit and also keeps condensation from forming in the tank and getting water in the system,

FYI remove bowl once a month and drain off any accumulated water, refill with fresh diesel and reinstall, should not have to bleed.

Thanks for the additional details.

I'm doing my best to simply avoid the situation by not running out of fuel, but just in case, I've also bought the manual.

Thanks again.

Topping off the fuel tank at the end of the day is excellent advice. And regular cleaning of the filter bowl couldn't hurt either.

Thanks again,
_Mike
