B2410 used vs new Kubota or 2210 4010

A local dealer has a couple of 2410's with FEL and mower deck - one's a '98 and the other is a '99. Asking is 11,900 and 11,700. I figure that I can get them to come down a bit. Both appear to be in great condition with very low hours (200+).

What are opinions on doing this versus going new with an equivalent current B series, JD 2210, or 4010? I need to look at loader capacities, etc - not sure how the 2410 measures up to the JD 4010.

Thanks!

Patrick

That all depends on how you plan to pay for them. I found a sweet deal on a JD with FEL and rear mower deck in Indiana, for 10K, but could not find a way to finance it, so I went with a brand new B2410 with just the FEL, and purchased the other attachments as I could afford them. Would have saved about 4K if I could have purchased the used one.

The price sounds reasonable if the mower deck is a bota midmount and bota FEL. The one I have cost over $14K with just the FEL and it is a 2000 model. The deck alone was $2100. That would have made the tractor almost $17K by the time it was delivered.

You might find a sweet deal on a used one if you can pay for it, if financing is an issue, you may wont to consider new then. As for which brand, that I leave up to you, both teh bota and the JD are fine machines, it all boils down to what you plan to use it for and how you feel running it. My one and only complaint about the Bota is the placment of the brake pedals, they are useless where they put them.

The 2410 is more tractor than the other two and has more and better features, such as position control on the 3 point hitch, full cat 1 capability and the ability to take a backhoe.

Ok, further complications - they've also got a 2230 at a great price that just came in off of a lease. Light use, and I still get the warranty at a low price with factory financing as an option. Can it do light excavating?

Will the BX do what I need to do? Mowing, dragging the arena and general tasks it'll shine. Main concern would be whether or not I can level some berms in the back of the property - they're moderately packed down. Does the BX have enough umph to dig into those? Basically driving forward with the bucket down, lifting up and moving the dirt. I know I won't have problems with loose dirt, but what about the packed stuff?

Thanks!

Short answer: yes. You must have some sort of ballast and the best all round would be a box scraper.

Put the "teeth" down and break up the soil, then turn around and scoop it up.

Does the BX or a 2210 have the power to do the work? You bet. My pic #11 shows a road I 'dozed through virgin brush using a BX and a front blade.

The box scraper idea is right on. It provides ballast and doubles as a ripper/bulldozer.

If you haven't used a BX, you'll be AMAZED at how capable they are. Ask the dealer if you can take one home for a weekend to try before you buy. Even if you had to pay a rental fee, it would be worth it to help make the decision.

I totally agree about the tool to use on the berms.

I'd been working on cleaning up a mess I made pulling some small stumps with the bucket on and off for a few weekends. I put on the box blade for the grading and it did what I expected. Then I went after some old, packed mounds at the edge of the pasture. I started with the bucket planning to dig out the mounds and carry them to where I needed some fill dirt with the FEL. After a few attempts with only limited success, I decided to see what the box blade could do. I put the teeth all the way down and made one pass.

What a difference. The box blade is made for this.

Tear it up with the teeth in forward. Back over it with the bucket curled down to scrape it into a small pile. Lift bucket over pile, scoop it up and haul it away.

Just be sure your teeth are well secured. Bouncing across the pasture, I keep losing the scarifier teeth. So far, I've been able to find them, but not the cotter pins, and this last time not one of the big pins that hold the teeth.

I think I'm headed for the boating store for some round cotter pins like we use sailing. They won't vibrate out or get snagged & come off.

If you don't need to haul the dirt, you can rip it up with the box & smooth/pack it with the box and or the bucket.

- JP
