 Tire Chains

Do I need front and rear tire chains for my new Kubota bx1500? I have turf tires on it. I intend to use my FEL and a rear snowplow to keep my driveway clear. My gravel driveway is about 75' long, 15' wide and flat. It tends to get blowing & drifting and have an icy base.
Living in Western NY, we can count on long cold winters, and I'd like to be prepared.
Advice would be appreciated,
Garner

I think you will be very happpy with chains all around. No matter what anyone else says about stress on the front axle, you will be on snow and ice and it will still be less traction than you would have on dry pavement with turf tires. Some Kubotas have clearance problems for chains on the front with the tie rod mount. I don't know about the BX

If you were using a blower or had paved drive, I would say maybe not, but you are pushing heavy with light and need max traction. I love my chains on gravel drive and would not be without them. My tractor turns into a whole different machine with chains.

I have a bx2200 which is pretty much the same thing - bigger engine. I have a set of chains but never seemed to need them. The dif lock always got me going when I got stuck. It is said that 4x4 ATV's and tractors shouldn't have them but why would you be able to order them from your Kubota dealer? If you only use them with the slick stuff you should be ok I would think. I do think you need some slippage to keep from breaking something. I look at it this way, my 2002 4x4 xtra cab chevy pushes snow like no tomorrow and there are no chains on that. If you know what you are doing and stay flat the 4x4 is all you need if you ask me.,Jim

I use my bX1500 and 5' rear blade to clear snow from my 200' driveway and my neighbors 1000' driveway without chains. As long as you don't try to push snow up a steep slope you should be fine. We get a lot less snow here, but it tends to be very wet and heavy. I have family in Holland, NY. They use an L2250 with a 3-point blower.

Get a set of skid shoes for your blade. They are very helpful on a gravel drive. Otherwise, you can turn the blade around and push with the back side. The weight of the blade should keep it from riding up over the snow. Of course, be careful about using the diff lock in 4WD. Attempting to turn while the diff is locked can cause major geartrain damage!
