 790 rear lift compacity

I read on the Deere website that the rear lifting compacity on the 790 is only 815 pounds is that enough just for brush hogging????

 790 rear lift compacity

I use an MX-5 with my 790 without problems. Technically, it's slightly heavier than the 790's rated for, but it has no problems lifting it. I do make it a point to keep it up in the air as little as possible, just to be on the safe side. Whatever cutter you use, be sure you've got enough front weights (I have 240 pounds) or you'll be in for an exciting ride when you go over a mound.

If you have a front end loader you will not have any problem with a 5 foot cutter on the 790 and no weighting of the front is needed. If not just ballast the front as you would any other tractor. The "790 rear lift capacity" converstaion has been beaten to death, here's my take:

The 790 will lift any implement that an under 3000lbs./24 PTO horsepower tractor can safely run. Would it be nice to lift more, sure..... but I think that similarly weighted tractors that are rated to lift 1500lbs. really can't be used safely with that much weight on the 3 pt. Think about it, how is a tractor that weighs in the neighborhood of 3000lbs functioning with 1500lbs. hanging out behind it???? Also I have never read a post where 790 owners couldn't use an implement solely because it weighed too much, if the implement is that big it probably belongs on a 30+ PTO horsepower tractor that weighs much more. I have also read posts where the JD ratings were very conservative and 790 owners were lifting around 1000lbs. 24" behind the lift arm ends.

If you like the 790 get it. If a tractor of about 25 PTO horsepower is what your work requires, it will do what you need, the rest is just numbers.

 790 rear lift compacity

I need to be able to lift at least 1200lb round bales with my 790 on the three point. Is there anyway that this tractor would be able to do this. The guys at John Deere in Kalispell Mt told me it could lift up to 2000 lbs from the rear, I thought this was a little much but I believed them. I am new at this game. I tried to lift an 800 lb bale and there was no hope. What are you guys opinion. Thanks Mont

The ratings and physical capacity are different. The ratings include a safety factor that's intended to provide adequate stability. The 790 is a light-weight tractor and its stability is limiting when big weight is up no matter how much power the 3ph has. I think there's a problem if a JD rep gave a weight that's different than the rated weight.

It may well lift 2,000 lbs. at the pins but the rated weight is normally 2' behind the pins and also includes the safety factor. It depends on the diameter of the bales but an 800 lbs. bale may be centered further back than 2' and that would take more power to lift. My impression is that a 790 is not well suited for 1200 lbs. bales on the 3ph.

From a safety standpoint don't do it. The bulk of the weight of a big round is way too far behind the 3pt. plus you're raising the center of gravity of the whole unit, (tractor+ bale) to a height that makes a narrow tread tractor pretty tippy. Just my thoughts. Frank.

If moving 1200lb bales is part of your needs I don't think anything but the largest and certainly heaviest CUTs are what you need. Lift capacity is meaningless if you are doing a wheelie or flipped on yer' side". If I needed the manuevability of a CUT for my other chores, I would get a big old used tractor w/o FEL (so it's cheaper) and use it for bale moving.
