i own approx. 5 acres and will be mowing around 3 acres of it...i tried all the units out last fall and liked the john deere the best when mowing...the massey was second...

well its time to buy and i'm faced with a decision...i can get the massey with the mmm and loader for $11,825 it is a 2005 model...i can get the jd 2305 for $11,900 w/ just the mmm...i have talked to several people and they tell me that you will only use the loader for about a year...then it will sit in storage after the jobs are finished...

what are some oppinions?

I have a tractor with loader and MMM. The reverse is true for me. I took the MMM off and left it off. I mow lots of small parcels and ended up with numerous lawn/garden tractors for mowing. The loader is indispensable! Think of it like a powered wheelborrow.

Picking up brush and sticks in spring, raking leaves into it in fall, pushing snow in the winter. Hauling stone for driveway sprucing up. Hauling dirt, sand and woodchips for lawn projects. You also can use it to transport and lift things like appliances on and off the truck or trailer. Something like in the "Sound of Music", blah, blah, blah..........these are my favorite things.

I'd go with the JD merely for the improved resale value. You will get more than the difference in price for it when you decide to sell. If you have it the rest of your life, parts are always available everywhere.

jprater,

you're talking about getting a 12K tractor for just mowing 3 acres of property. Isn't that an overkill? A good solid garden tractor will do that job just fine for around 6K (Toro and Kubota sell excellent garden tractors). Now if you do get a 12K tractor, then it just makes sense to get the loader for all the reasons yooper listed. I faced the same decision and decided to buy the loader. Also, retail for a unit with a loader will be far greater than without.

get one with a loader and a backhoe. because you know those pesty little rocks turn into boulders in your lawn every spring. I think of it as the money and time I save changing blades will pay for the hoe. and you can make a few bucks digging french ditches and opening septic covers in the neigborhood.

my 2 pennies....

I put the loader on my 2210 and have never been sorry. It's a real workhorse and does a thousand odd jobs. Yesterday I had a 15 gallon sprayer tank in it and I sprayed my trees from the drivers seat.

If you don't want the loader then downsize to a strong Garden Tractor. But, you'll be missing lots of fun! There's always another project on my 5 acres or for my neighbors.
