 JD 4300 Need Quick Help

I am in the marked for a CUT and was VERY close to purchasing a new one this week. My dad found a guy wanting to sell a JD 4300. It is a 2001 or 2002, 4WD, Hydro, 554 hrs. Suppose to look like new. I talked to the guy last night and he is waning to upgrade to a 5000 series JD. He priced me the tractor for $8500. If this tractor is what he says it is, Is that a good deal? I am going tonight to look at the tractor and need some help.

1. What are the known issues with these tractors and what should I look for? I know the battery acid issue is a problem and I will check. Any others?

2. Will the Year be on the tractor anywhere?

3. If I get the serial number can I call a dealer and see if there are any recals on the tractor. The ones I have read here are the rear gear, front axle, and battery. Are these CUTs like cars in that you do not have to be the original owner to get recall work completed at that dealer.

4. I don't know if there are any service records with the tractor or not. If there are not, what would you suggest doing if I buy the tractor? Tranny fluid and filter, engine oil, and a good greasing is what I am thinking? What is required at the 500 hr service and how much would this cost if I did it myself?

5. One last question: It has Ag tires and I would want R4 for mowing duty. How much should I have to pay for a set of R4's and to get them loaded?

Thanks for the help and any replies before this afternoon would be greatly appreciated...

That sounds like a very good price. It sounds like you already know about the issues on these - front axle, battery acid, etc. Tractors aren't like cars, there really aren't model years, but you can give the s/n to a dealer and they can tell you when it was manufactured and first sold. I'm not sure about who can have recall work done but you should call a dealer on that as well. The 500 hour service would probably cost around $3-500, but price varies by dealer. If you buy R4s you will likely have to get new rims too, so I'd guess ~$1200-1500 for a set of R4s with rims.

Thanks for the input.

SO, I have to get new rims to get R4's? I didn't know that. I thought it was just a tire swap. I guess I would have to shop at the dealer for this? Any online places to get rims/tires for the 4300?

You might put out the word that you're interested in trading the R1's for R4's. Sometimes that works. You could also ask the dealer if they'd be interested in working out a trade. I don't know of any dealer for tractor tires (but they probably exist). Swapping these can be a bear, even if they're not loaded. You'll want to make sure to stick with OEM sizes so you don't get the front/rear ratio out of whack and burn something up.

 JD 4300 Need Quick Help

GREAT NEWS! A 4300 slept in my garage last night! And it gets better!!!!

I went yesterday after work with cash in pocket to look at the Deere. Pulling up the drive way, I noticed that the tractor did not have AG tires but instead had R4s. The tractor is indeed as described with little to no wear. It has 555 hrs and runs / drives flawlessly. I ended up paying $8500 for the tractor and the guy followed me home with it on his flatbed.

The tractor has had a loader on it at one time so it has the joystick, hydraulics, grille guard, and the attachement tubing on the side of the tractor.

I rode it around his place for about 30 minutes and looked, listened very well for something not right. It did not smoke, leak, or get hot. Everything on the tractor seems to work well. I did investigate the battery box and it seems to never have had any acid spills.

I am very, very please with my purchase and I am finding it very hard to be at work knowing it is in the garage.....

I will post more about it after this weekend when I get to play!!!!

Thanks for everyones help!!!

Congratulations, and welcome to the club! Glad to hear the tire issue was a non-issue for you.
