The local JD dealer has a 4100 with fewer than 400 hours for sale. Price of $11,000 includes tractor, JD 410 FEL, a 54" MMM (brand unspecified, but likely a JD), and a grass-catching system.
Previous owner used this dealer for maintenance work, and traded in his tractor there, so I presume he was a satisfied customer. Dealer himself seems like a decent sort.
Any comments on price and/or equipment describe would be welcome.

DRankin--
Given the number of hours, and the type of equipment, is there any particular service I should ask the dealer to perform, or any part to check for wear?
In general, do you have any suggestions on things I ought to look out for/ask the dealer to check before I agree to the deal? Your thoughts would be appreciated.

A couple of questions first:
What sort of tires are on it?
HST or Gear?
How big is the bucket?
Are you planning on using the mower deck and collection system? ....

I have watched the 4100 market around me for some time, as
considered buying one. If it has HST, it sounds fair. If it is gear, too high a price by far. ....

DRenkin and Denwood--
So far, I've only been able to look at the machine through the fence (saw the tractor on Sunday, and talked to the dealer by phone on Tuesday).
Tractor has turf tires (which I want). FEL is 410 model, so I assume a 48 inch bucket.
Unsure about transmission; will get back to you. Regret the delay; this is kind of a long-distance romance. Appreciate your patience.

DRankin and Denwood--
This is a follow-up to my previous posting.
More info from phonecall with dealer: Tractor in question has industrial tires (not turf, as I previously thought), has a gear transmission, and "was the property of a master mechanic who traded up for another JD." Grass catcher is a Piko (sp?) model, apparently costing about $2600 today.
Any comments of the price, or the equipment would be appreciated.

If you are going to be mowing with it I can tell you that the HST is alot more enjoyable to operate after having used a gear drive for 20 years, I appreciate the HST and the "live" PTO they all have.
Check to find out what kind of PTO the 4100 gear has. It probably will not have a "live" mid PTO, if not you'll be clutching your mmm deck in and out every time you stop, not good for the belts etc....Maybe Deere has some sort of compromise set up, not sure.
The HST in my book is a must have.

I agree, I have always had gear tractors of all sizes, and I will never buy another if there is a hydro available. Gears still have their place, pulling very heavy loads up and down hills, heavy tillage. Not for loaders, not for mowing. If you have just a big slat square yard with no obstacles, and just don't care, you are in the drivers seat with that dealer. Gear on that small a tractor is the kiss of death and he will have trouble dupping someone into buying it with its "dead" PTO and gears. I see gear 4100s all the time in the paper and on ebay and they seem to bring $2000 and up, less than hydro and take much longer to sell. ....

A 4100 Gear will not have a live PTO.... So not so good for mowing.
On the re-sale... it's true. I couldn't sell mine for love or money and finally traded it in a took a minor beating.

OK Gents--
I'm convinced. I think I'll be patient and continue to look for the right stuff. No sense in getting something I won't be happy with, even if the price is OK, which, apparently, this is not. Lose/Lose.
Thanks to one and all for the advice/commentary.
