It starts, runs, but only at idle with full pressed fuel pedal. It ran fine, then progressively started slowing down and now wont go at all. Changed filter, gas, fule lines, cleaned carb, backed off brakes in case..and nothing works. Also took the little fuel 'pump'? off the wall and cleaned it.
Simply said, it will not advance to run at any speed, just idle when fully depressing fuel pedal. I know its a simple engine, but I'm stumped..help !

Will it rev up if you use the choke? Choke it almost all the way and try it. ....

Yes, and it dies immediately. I have tried everything to get it to rev up, no luck. It's as if the 'advance, as in old cars is not working'. Thanks for the reply..Linda ....

Does it have an exterior ignitor? It is a small silver box mounted on the throttle plate on top of the motor and would have a black wire going to it. That controls the spark and advance on older models. If it has one, check the wire and connection to it, if they are good, I would try a new ignitor. If it doesn't have the exterior ignitor, those functions are all done in the coil. I guess that would be your next move. ....

As best as I can tell, there is no silver box on top with a black wire. There is one on the side wall of the engine box area, but it has a multi-wire plug.
There is covers over the advance levers/coil/and throttle cable hookups. I tend to believe as you..no advancement in spark to accel with, but to know where to start is mindboggling. Thanks for the reply..Linda

A new ignitor is an expensive item, and although it is probably the prime suspect, are you sure the linkages on top of the engine are all moving as they should? Is the plate they are all mounted on securely attached to the engine? ....

I worked on it today. Made sure the carb is clean and all passages are open. The carb is ready and the engine runs only when fuel feed is wide open, but it is only running at idle speed. I'll take off the covers and make sure the levers are ok, they seem to move normal. It's strange it runs/starts fine. just wont rev up. ....

Did you ever figure this out? My gator is doing the same thing now!
Hoping you could save some time, as I am stumped too.

Yes I found the problem and it blew me away. A friend suggested the muffler was stopped up backing pressure into engine. He took the muffler off and cleaned rust till it was almost gutted. Nothing else was done. He put it back on and it ran like a scolded ape. Hope this helps..I know the frustration of chasing these problems! ....

That would do it. Not only will restricted exhaust create issues but also air intake will. Diesel will run hot due to clogged air filter. Issue to watch for is insects building homes in both the exhaust and the intake. ....
