I'm looking at getting a 93 F250 XL 4x4 for use around the farm. It has a 351 with a 5 speed with around 70k on it. Only option looks to be a/c. What should I look out for? What goes wrong with these at that milage and above? It has always been a farm truck, and is fairly clean with just the typical Ford rust over the wheelwells in the rear.

I would check and see what trans it has. I had a simliar year with a 5 speed and the slave cylinder went out and it was all downhill from their. The trans was very expensive to fix and get parts for. We ended up putting a whole new trans in it and it costed alot of cash. Other than that I would check the slip yoke on the front axle and make sure all of that is okay. The rest should be good for quite a while.

Woodbeef,
I have a 91 F-250 HD 4x4 with 460 CI. and 5 speed.
161,000 miles and working good.
I have replaced all the U-joints front and rear, rotors ,drums and shoes, starter.
Other than the normal high wear items it has been problem free.
I plan to get another 100,000 miles out of the old girl before I'm ready to part with my money for a replacement.

Thanks guys.

After a test drive,I've decided to pass on this truck. It needs way too much work to pay anything over $1000 for it. The tranny grinds going into 2nd no matter which speed or RPM. The transfercase will not shift into neutral or low. The dealer wants $4000 for it and says it needs: Brake drums, rotors, lines, shoes, pads, hardware kits and e-brake cables. Also tie rods, ball joints and all U-joints replaced. Seems the previous owner only drove it and put gas in it. I talked to the mechanic that checked it over and he said the oil was like molasses, and the filter was about rusted through!! ....

I would pass on the truck but, the dealer sounds good. Anyone that would tell you all of that must be O.K. I have a F250 ext cab 4x4 with 155K on it 460/5spd. If you find one you might as well buy the 460, the 351 didn't do much better on fuel. The 460 with reg maintenance will last and last. Mine has done nothing but pull a trailer it's whole life, I've done nothing but regular maintenance(brakes, hoses etc). I still get 12/14 unloaded and 8/10 pulling between 5000 and 9000lbs.
Happy shopping! ....
