955 John Deere , with grooming mower attatched. PTO was working good , but now wont engage, and when it does turns slow then finally stops all together

The first scenario that comes to mind is not a good one. The PTO clutch.

With the tractor turned OFF and the PTO engaged try turning the PTO shaft, a pry bar carefully placed through the u-joint is helpful for this.

Other than gear backlash there should not rotation of the shaft, the PTO drive should lock the driveshaft solid.

If it spins you likely have a problem with the clutch. The scenario you describe is usually because the clutch is so worn there's no 'grip' left, it turns a bit, slowly, because there's a very little friction left, then under load it breaks free and allows the mower to stop.

The top three items for eating a PTO clutch are a snowblower, a rototiller and a mower, in that order.

I guess you have a new rear mower? Did the you ever use the rear PTO for anything else like a brush hog? Does any rear PTO attachment work but not the new mower?The 955 last ones are from the late 1990 s so your tractor is at least 22 years old , original owner ?

Sounds like you could have a PTO Clutch issue. ....
