Horse or Cow? I thought horse was best, my neighbor claims it's too strong and prefers cow manure. Of course, either one would need to be composted for a year, but if you had a choice, which one would you use?

Test your soil - then test each manure and see which one best matches the inadequacies in the soil profile. As an aside soil tests run about $7 for the majors, so this is an inexpensive exercise. ....

And what would be the optimal pH for the tomatoe plants? They do like acidic soil, which is what I already have and, from my understanding, the horse manure will yield a slightly lower pH. I guess I can set up an experiment growing two groups of plants, each on different kind of manure, and score the yields by total weight and taste. ....

A test might be a good idea. I just don't know if you'd find a significant difference. Just my opinion. I've used both cow and horse manure and both worked great. But then I wasn't looking for specific differences. I just wanted good produce. ....

The left overs from your weekend fish cleaning station or slivers of carp or catfish make the best organic tomatoe growing fertilizer. They will be about twice normal size. ....

Placing the fish stuff about 6" away from the plant and buried about 6" works really good. Yes, sometimes a critter will dig it up. Placing a slab stone over it helps to deter them.
I've never heard of putting manure on a compost pile. Generally people around here (I'm from Michigan)put it directly on the garden. Horse manure generally has a lot of undigested seeds in it from hay and grasses that they ate. You generally get allot of weeds in the garden from horse manure if placed directly on the garden.
Either way it seems it will be a stinky situation. Placement of the compost pile with regard to your living quarters and prevailing wind is crucial. ....

I dumped a load of cow manure to ferment once like your compost pile. I didn't have odor problems. Once it crusts up, odor shouldn't be a problem for ya. Now keeping the dogs from eating or rolling in it is another matter... ....
