My wife and I moved in to our place in the country about 4 years ago. Last year we decided it was time to start taking caring of the 2.5 acres of old pasture, so I was given the OK for our B7500.

This pasture has been sitting for at least 25 years. The previous owners had an idea to start a Christmas tree farm and planted 500 trees. This was 20 years ago. They did nothing after the initial planting, so the highest of these trees is probably 12', and some are as small as 2' (maybe I can market them as Bonsai trees).

Last year, it was all I could do to keep the field cut. I didn't want to give the weeds a chance to reach maturity height. I've already seen the benefit, weeds are being overtaken by more grassy vegetation.

Next, the plan is to rip most of the spruce trees out (saving some for our own use during future holiday seasons), along with the spotted alders that are starting to invade.

What next? My goal is to eventually have a pasture that could support a horse (high quality forage). I don't mind going about it slowly. I would really like to avoid going the start-from-scratch-RoundUp-plough-disc route.

The ground is good old St-Lawrence River valley clay. Do I need a disc? I'm a little iffy about trying to pull one behind my B7500. What about a small cultivator? Would that disturb the surface enough for manually broadcasting seed?

Any experience with this out there?

Dennis, The new home page looks great. Congratulations.

Another suggestion, based on my assumption that more traffic is better than less traffic: The automatic e-mail feature that sends you a message when somebody responds to a post contains the actual response and a link to the thread.

May I suggest removing the actual response from the message and leaving only the link, while perhaps adding summary information like subject, thread title, time of post, user who replied, etc.

Again, this is solely based on my assumption and I willingly accept criticism.

Wow, that's expensive. I'm looking at a piece of land up here that has an old dilapidated shack on it. The thing is, as long as that shack stays standing, there's a right to build. If a year elapses after the collapse of the shack, then the property gets zoned agricultural. Anyways, it's 8 acres - 5 field and 3 maple sugar bush. The guy is asking 11K CDN for it. I was going to offer 8.

I think this one of the most-discussed subjects amongst tractor people. Here's my take: get the HST.

I had a B5100E (11hp, 2WD, 6F and 2R gears). Problem 1 - PTO powered equipment stops when you press the clutch. This is most problematic for things like snow blowing and tilling. The way to make sure that you always have enough power to complete a 'pass' without having to press on the clutch is to go real slow. For me, that meant snow blowing in low 1 - that's slow. Problem 2 - speed adjustments. With a manual you either have to adjust speed with the throttle, change gears or ride the clutch. This will result in a change in engine RPM (except in the case of riding the clutch). There is something to be said about being able to adjust your ground speed without changing your engine RPM. This is often overlooked by people who have never driven an HST before.

Yeah, the HST robs horse power. But I can still spin my wheels which to me means that it would be horse power wasted anyway (except when talking about PTO horse power, which on the HST is only 1 less than the B7500DT).

Toby, I don't personally have any information regarding your questions, but check out the link - very useful for determining values. I did punch in the L245 and there are 3 different models, the DT, F, and HC. Also it looks like they were made from 1977 - 1982. Hope this helps.
