Getting in a little late on this one...

My old jet pump let go last February - while I was nicely lathered up in the shower. I towelled off as best I could and headed out to the pump store. Bought a 3/4 hp Burk. I noticed when I was removing the old one that there was this weird looking piece on the end of the pipe right before the pump. It was kind of bulb-shaped and it said Jacuzzi on it. Anyways, it was old and corroded so I didn't bother putting it back. I guess some of you realize that this thing was a check valve. When foot valves go, you can temporarily get around the problem by putting a check valve in at the pump end to keep the water from leaking down out of the pipe. I went back to the pump store and bought one of those too.

I can identify with those who own older homes - ours was built in 1890. In the five years I've been here, I've already delt with my fair share of headaches.

I have a B7500 with a 48" cutter. I have about 2.5 acres of field to cut. This used to be a hayfield 30years ago - I'm the first to start mowing it again. As a result, there are many small trees that I must drive around. It takes me about a weekend to cut, at a weekend's pace (slow). It goes very well - I can put my foor to the mat in low gear while mowing.

With that said, I don't want it anymore. For the same price as my B7500 and a loader (which I don't have), I could have gotten a very nice, second hand AG tractor with loader and a high-end garden tractor - like a Cub or something - for cutting the grass around the house. This way, I could use that larger tractor to yank out those trees, pull a small set of discs, and eventually cut my own hay in the field that I resurrected.

I'm trying to visualize this - bear with me.

Full load in bucket.
Bucket raised above the hood of the tractor.

Without the tires filled, I'm imagining a line coming down from the bucket and passing right through the front wheels. Sneeze on the back of the tractor and you're going over.

With the tires filled, that same line comes down from the bucket but ends up a little further back - changing the "pivot-point" from the front wheels to somewhere maybe only slightly behind them. The weight is therefore more evenly distibuted amongst the four wheels of the tractor. Not nearly as much weight is shifted back as would be if you added weight to the 3ph - but it is still shifted back more than if you had no weight at all on that side of the pivot.

Sound right?

Tom, not sure if you're just messing with me, but in case you're not. Tamarac is a kind of larch - tabarnac is something quite different. Suffice it to say that the less classy of the local French population use that word to punctuate certain sentences.

So you've been here, eh? We are actually of the very lucky few to have been granted a 10 year renewable lease on some crown land up north. Ever heard of Resevoir Taureau? We're about 70 Km's north of there. We used to have to take a float plane but now there are logging roads.

My house, however, is really in SW Quebec - I mean you can't get much more SW than this. Cornwall Ontario is the closest Canadian city. I actually drive through the US to get there.

Thanks TC. I'm not ready to go out and buy one yet - gotta wait until my Husq bites it. Problem(?) is that I bought this one because I wanted one that would last. It'll give me time to decide on a model and maybe the manufacturers time to improve their design.

I have a 1982 Honda Big Red. This thing just won't die. I use it to get from my pick-up truck to my hunting and fishing camp (about 300 yards). It's not that you couldn't get there on foot - you wouldn't want to. The trail is muddy and often flooded and would be very difficult to navigate with 80Lbs of gear on your back. Mind you, if you did decide to walk it, you would probably arrive before me on my ATC. I keep it in LOW 1, and let the machine work. There is something very satisfying about creeping along on a vehicle in a trail that would otherwise swallow you up, knowing (feeling anyway) that you are unstoppable.

I also use it to get to my moose hunting stand. Again, nice and slow - I have my rifle in a rack-mounted gun case - don't want to mess up my sights.

Yes, I've had it on two wheels before (pick any two), but it was my fault and I wasn't going fast enough to go any further than that. An understanding of the geometry of the machine and how it will react under certain conditions is an imperative piece of knowledge that is either known ahead of time or is learned very quickly - this applies to most any vehicle.

Danny, You're a tough customer. I believe all the hydros work that way.

Don't engage the PTO without the clutch - you will end up damaging something. Kind of like driving through red lights - it may work 5 times out of 10.

How are your machinig skills? Would it be feasibile for you to just get a block of metal and drill/tap the holes yourself? Forgive me if I'm oversimplying, but I have no idea what part you're talking about (not for the lack of your description, but for my ignorance of tractor hydraulics).

Here's an idea I've seen work well before. I'll do my best at explaining it, but a picture would be better (hint, hint, dennis ;)

Make an "A" frame out of 2x4's. Lean the frame against the post, say with the bottom about 10" away from the post. Anchor a rope/chain to the bottom of the post and string it up and over the "crotch" of the frame and finally to the tow bar of your tractor (you do have a tractor, don't you?). Pull - the forward motion of the tractor will be transferred to vertical motion by the "A" frame.

I didn't want to burden this post with all kinds of dimensions for the "A" frame - if you grasp the concept that I so feebly tried to express here, you're probably able to visualize what I'm talking about.

xgzx, Good for you. I was adament about a gear drive until I tried an HST. It's been a year and I have no regrets - except that I didn't get a loader (that's next on the list). Did you end up with the 272 or the 302...Yeah, right - as if you're going to have time to read this post with a brand new tractor sitting around.

JD's web site lists a 6' model that is available for this tractor, so I don't think it would be a problem. Howse is a less expensive brand of cutter, but since you're only cutting grassy stuff it would suit your needs. The economy model is listed on their site for 742$. I posted a link below.

Thanks for the advice, Peters. I found a Canadian company that makes some nice looking units. No web site, but I found the link below in a search. Of course, I'll be checking the el-cheapo junk piles found at the back of many tractor dealers' lots first.
