My JD 870 operator's manual says that it has a two stage dry clutch.

I had to deal with a similar situation on the stall side of our new barn. The existing grade directed all of the water towards the stall doors where it joined the run off from the roof. This didn't form a lake because it would run down the ramp into the pasture, eroding the ramp badly.

I dug out a half swale, removing all of the topsoil and the top layer of the subsoil. The target grade was to drop 12 inches in 30 feet at one of the paddock and 18 inches at the other end.

I back filled with bank run gravel at least six inches deep and covered with five inches of stone dust. The compound grade put all of the water in one corner of the half swale, just outside the paddock fence. I installed a french drain with a 6 inch in 10 feet drop to take the water away.

We recently got 2 1/2 inches of rain in 1 1/2 hour. The paddock drained nearly perfectly. I could touch up the grade in the paddock, but the horse redefine it on a regular basis. I figure that regrading in the spring is all that I'll do for maintenance.

Are you sure that that 790 3ph lift capacity isn't in Kg? My JD870 (roughly compatable) has a 3ph lift capacity of 853 Kg (1880 lbs) 24 inches behind the lift link ends.

Early one recent spring, my daughter backed the old Ford 2wd F250 with a load of hay across the slightly thawed pasture. No problem there, it's slightly downhill from the road to the shed and 3000 lbs of hay made for a _lot_ of traction. Now empty, the Ford couldn't get enough traction to move in a straight line:-) After playing in the mud for 10 minutes she decided to stop and ask for help. I gave the Ford a ten second try and headed for the garage.

When I got back to the pasture in my wife's Audi 200 turbo quattro with a length of chain, my daughter remarked about having _two_ vehicles stuck in the mud:^) I hooked a chain between the two vehicles, locked the center differential of the Audi and pulled the Ford up to the street with the Audi's engine running just above an idle.

A _real_ four wheel drive system, like Subaru's and Audi's will out perform almost all SUVs. If you can't lock the differentials, you don't have what it takes.

Catastrophic tire failure? That size tire at that pressure? Think "hand grenade" or "land mine". Tread separation from the carcass is probably the most benign failure.

I thought so, too. I bought a $450 PHD with a 9 inch auger. It's an EM5000 from Green Manufacturing, Inc. I've done 13 holes so far. The digger is fine, the soil sucks.

I've had either boulders in the hole or such loose gravel that I had to soak the hle to pull out the material.

I have B. F. Goodrich oversized turfs on my JD 870. I'm not at home, so I can't give you the tire size. They are over 12 inches wide and have an alternating chevron tread pattern. They are on rims mounted to the maximum width. That gives me a rear tread width of ~64 inches while giving me 3 inches or so between the tire and the fender for chains.

They have worked out well for me so far. They are not the best traction in mud and I expect that I'll need chains in the winter. They hardly mark the turf in tight turns.

My 8B has similar chains. I hit them with a few squirts of 30W oil when I grease the backhoe. I bought the tractor and backhoe used and it looked like I was the first person who ever lubricated the chains. They are beefy enough to look like they would last as long as the backhoe even if they were run dry. I figure a little oil can't hurt that much.

I think a better question would be "Should I trade my tractor in instead of selling it?". Used tractors seem to be worth very close to what was paid for them when they were new. The dealer probably can't get much more for your tractor than you can.

Over the years I've changed cars a few times. I've always found that I can get more money for my old car in private sale than in trade. In one case, I donated a car to the special olympics and made out better than selling it.

Here in Massachusetts there is a sales tax advantage to trading in. You are only charged the sales tax on the difference between the trade in value and the new vehicle price. I've always done better than that with private sale.

I would consider using hydraulic jack oil only as an emergency use fluid. Think about the difference in usage. Jack oil is seldom worked enough to get hot and is not a continuous duty fluid. The additives in HyTran or equivalent are there to provide characteristics that are required for good performance in a tractor. I doubt that Jack oil has the same ones.

As I said, I'm not against using something in an emergency. I ran out of power steering/power brake fluid in my older Audi. It was on a Sunday, 150 miles from home. They only place I could get mineral oil was a pharmacy. USP mineral oil got me safely home and prevented me from burning out a very expensive pump on the way.

Trick? Yeah. Patience.

I've put about 20 hours on my 5 1/2 foot boxblade. I've repaired erosion on a steep gravel drive, worked deep ruts out of 1/3 acre of pasture, graded and smoothed a swale and built another steep gravel drive.

When grading, being able to make perpendicular passes is very important. When I was grading the 2 foot deep ruts in my pasture I went N/S followed by E/W several times. The first pass was in reverse to knock down the ridges into the ruts. The next passes were with the scarifiers full down and the box held high, meduim and low. Then I pulled the scarifiers up to minimum cut and did another set of passes. When I was done the area I was working was the smoothest part of the pasture.

The moral of the story: so a little at a time and in cross directions if possible.

If you have a long gravel drive to grade you really want both an FEL and a box blade. The box blade will produce a better result, faster than using an FEL alone.

I recently acquired a 5 1/2 foot box blade. I used it to repair a fairly large and deep erosion channel in a steep gravel ramp that goes from my barn to the pasture. I used the FEL to move new gravel to the bottom of the ramp, backed the blade over the load and dragged it up the slope. It only took four repetitions to completly fill in the damage. I then back scraped the ramp with the FEL to compact the new material. Total time was less than 1/2 hour.

When I get back to the ramp, I'll crank up one side of the back blade and use it to cut a crown into the surface. Over time I'll start using the scarifiers so that I won't have to bring new material in.

If you're air conditioning your tractor I have to assume you have a cab. I'm looking for a cab for my JD 870. I'd appreciate any pointers. So far all I've found is Curtis and Sims.

The answer to your question is buried in the formula. RPM is the divisor. The lower the RPM required for any given horsepower the greater the torque. Since diesel engines tend to develop maximum horsepower at lower RPM than gasoline engines they tend to develop more torque. 20 HP at 2000 RPM is 52.5 ft lbs of torque while 20 HP at 4000 RPM is 26.25 ft lbs of torque (example exaggerated for clarity). Fuel type is not the determining factor. My wife's car's 5 cylinder turbocharged 2.2 liter gasoline engine develops a maximum of 234 ft lbs of torque at 1900 RPM which is generated by 85 HP. The maximum horsepower (217 HP) is generated at about 6000 RPM which yields 189 ft lbs of torque. A governor on that at 2200 RPM would make it a great tractor engine. Used at 1900 RPM, it would probably last forever (it only has 198,000 miles on it now) and it would be pretty economical, too. --
