I don't know much about Long tractors. I've only seen one before. If you have a manual transmission, it's possible to pull start the tractor. You don't need a starter.

Get the engine warmed up. Use a space heater, torpedo kerosene heater, or your electric block heater. Now energize your glow plugs for one or two cycles. Once the engine is ready to go, have somebody help you pull start the tractor.

Put your manual transmission in high gear. Putting the tractor in high gear is important, as this will allow the engine to spin over much easier. Turn your key to the run position. Get going down the driveway and then let the clutch out. After a few spins on the engine it should start right up for you. QUICKLY depress the clutch once the tractor is started, as you don't want to run over the vehicle that is towing you.

You can now use your tractor as you normally would. Don't shut off the tractor until you have it parked where you want it for service work.

Of all the implements I own, the one I use the most often is the 3-point landscaping rake.

The owner of the local motel has a pea-gravel parking lot. She's fussy about her carpets and doesn't like tar and heavy oils being tracked into her motel rooms, so she went with pea gravel.

The parking lot at the motel requires frequent maintenance. The landscaping rake does a fantastic job of it. I turn the rake around and drag it backwards, with the tines facing rearward. This allows the gravel to free-flow through the tines without carrying any gravel along with me.

Winter parking lot clearing results in gravel being moved over into the grassy lawn areas. This is a real pain for the people who do the mowing. Here again the rake performs well. Simply angle the rake to make it act more like a blade, and watch the gravel move from the grass back to the parking lot. It takes a few passes, but it works great and the mowing company loves me.

By far the best thing about the rake is when trimming hedges. Simply drop your hedge trimmings on the ground next to the hedges, then drag the rake to gather them all up. It takes just minutes to clean up after trimming nearly a 1/2 mile of hedges at the local cemetery.

The rake works great for removing tree bark and wood chips left over from processing firewood. It works extremely well for gravel driveway maintenance, as well as lawn dethatching, gathering fallen leaves, twig removal after a heavy wind, etc.

I recently started cleaning up bank parking lots, and other business places after a long winter of winds blowing in debris up against fences, or being piled up by the snow removal crews. Not only does it clean this stuff in a hurry, it also makes the grass grow back greener and thicker than ever before.

I make far more money with my tiller than I do any other implement, but the rake gets used the most. It is my favorite implement and I continue to find new projects for it.

I'm no fan of Deere's Ehydro transmission. I've been called upon to help figure out why the error codes keep coming up on these things. In many cases the error codes are due to ice, snow, dirt, twigs, grass, manure, etc. But it's not easy to figure out, due to the stupidity of the engineers.

I always thought tractors were meant to be used in all of these conditions without causing any problems.

Rather than have an "Error Code 1", for example, Deere uses a system of dashes and dots, etc. Without access to Deere's special decoding manual.....which is very expensive.....there's no real way to figure out what the error codes mean. Unless you're a trained JD service tech, those error codes will be entirely meaningless to you.

Search the internet.....or this site...for common problems with the tractors you're comparing. In this day and age there's no excuse for blind purchases.

The frost plug heater has a rubber boot around the portion that fits into the frost plug hole in your block. When you tighten the screw, that rubber boot squeezes out and fits tight against the walls of the hole in the block.

Don't over-tighten it, as you could damage the rubber boot. It needs to be tight....just not too tight.

Here in North Dakota we use heaters on everything. Battery blankets, fuel tank heaters, fuel line heaters, block heaters, tank heaters......you name it. The problem is most of these things are not eaily installed on smaller tractors. These heaters draw fairly large amounts of power and our little tractors don't have large enough charging systems to keep them functioning.

A fuel tank heater will only work for you while the tractor is sitting next to an outlet.

Up here we use full hood blankets. These blankets are insulated and cover the entire tractor hood...engine, side panels, and all. The heat that is trapped inside the blanket will help keep your fuel tank and fuel lines warm. The blanket has a small adjustable opening in the front to allow for cold air passage through your radiator. When it gets down to about 20 below zero, the radiator opening can be snapped fully shut.

These are easy to sew up yourself. You can buy them of course, but it's not necessary.

I'll be taking down a large Elm at the top of the highest hill in Minot North Dakota on April 1st. I'd like to climb that tree to set my rigging lines, then take a picture overlooking the city for you. I'll be about 1/2 mile above the city, looking down on the entire town.

Yes.....safety first. We've spent a great deal of time learning the physics of rigging down trees. I attended a training class in Minot last summer and we've been working hard ever since. I'd much rather use ropes than cables. So much easier to work with, and far lighter when attempting to rig up a tree.

I'll post a few pictures here, provided Dennis will allow for it. Of course....we'll also be using the tractor for most of the ground work, so that will be directly related to the tractor discussions.

It's 23 degrees below zero here this morning. No power in town. No heat in the city houses. No gas stations operating as of now. Could be a very long day for us around here.

It may be possible to adjust the clutch, but you'll need a shop manual in order to perform this adjustment properly. If you don't get it right the first time, you'll destroy the clutch.

And yes.....in most cases you'll need to split the tractor in order to replace the clutch. It's a big job without the proper tools.

Having the few extra gears available is really only necessary during demanding situations, such as when plowing, tilling, or blowing snow.

There are a few other instances when having an extra gear to pick from would be nice -- such as when spraying pesticides, applying fertilizers, or working on hilly ground.

This loader valve has an open center, with optional power beyond. Also includes a float position detent. The link also contains a measured drawing as well as instructions for connection to your tractor.

Check to be sure your loader valve isn't stuck in the float position. To me, it sounds as though the hydraulic system is in use somewhere else....more than likely the loader.

Work all of the valves on your loader joystick to be sure that they're all centered.

This old conveyor was originally powered by an electric motor/gearbox combination unit. I was often irritated by the fact that I had to use it somewhere within reach of an electrical outlet.

The conveyor was lengthened by four additional feet, then converted to be powered by a hydraulic motor. The hydraulic power comes from the log splitter.

I purchased a new valve for the splitter. The new valve has a power beyond port. When the splitter is busy splitting wood, the conveyor doesn't run. The conveyor runs only after the splitter finishes the splitting cycle.

No longer does my splitter eat up gas while waiting for another log. It's now busy doing something useful at all times.

I can now place my conveyor anywhere I want to. The power comes from the splitter, allowing me to take the whole operation out into the trees with me.

Ole and Lena were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. All of their friends were there, including Ole's best man from the wedding.....Sven.

Sven searched the house over looking for Ole, but he couldn't seem to find him, so he asked Lena where Ole might be.

Lena says to Sven, "Go up on the top floor and look out the nouth window, you'll see him sitting on dat dere big rock out in the pasture".

Sure enough, there he was, sitting on dat big rock, holding his face in hands. So, Sven makes the trip out to the pasture to visit with Ole. "Ole, vat are you doing out here? Shouldn't you be inside celebrating with your wife and friends?"

Ole replies, "Sven you were my best man at the wedding. You remember when Lena and I got into dat big fight on our wedding night and I threatened to kill her? You talked me out of doing it! Well just think, Sven......had you let me go through with it, I'd be getting out of jail 'bout now."

Yes, our snow has melted, but the rain doesn't seem to stop. We've visited the tree pile twice over the past two weeks. The mud is at least ankle deep around what remains of those trees. It appears as though it may be August before we'll be able to get in there without getting stuck.

I'll keep you posted.

A narrow blower will cause you some problems. As you move in reverse, your tires will begin to climb over the snow you were not able to blow from behind them. You'll find that this will cause the blower's cutting edge to also climb.

It's always better to have a blower that is at least as wide as your tractor. To compensate for the speed problem, simply take smaller cuts.....half passes......allowing the blower to handle the amount of snow being fed in with higher ground speeds.

It's highly unlikely that those pins got bent from simply lifting the blower with the 3-point hitch. Most likely the pins bent when ramming the blower into a snow pile, or a very hard drift.

Standard lift pins will work just fine as replacements. I purchase mine at TSC. I've never had a problem with them.

As I was out trimming the hedges today, I had some time to ponder over your friend's situation.

It's possible that the excavator's hydraulic pressure relief valve may have been adjusted, causing the system to go into bypass. Fluid flowing through a pressure bypass valve will also generate a tremendous amount of heat.

The B2400 would be a far better choice for you, but with 20 acres you should really be looking for something even larger than the B2400. Maintaining 20 acres would be a bit too much to ask of either of these tractors.

Given the choice between the two, the B2400 would be my pick. The larger tires on the B series tractors make for a much better ride over rough ground.

The best part......the B series tractors have a full size category 1 3-point hitch, meaning that you could easily find implements to match. The BX tractors have a smaller 3-point hitch, requiring special implements that aren't easy to find. Used Cat1 implements are available at auction for little or nothing. You could easily fit your B2400 up with a used rear blade, rake, cultivator, plow, mower, etc. Not so easy to do with the BX tractor.

However, I'd be looking for something slightly larger, such as a Kubota L Series with about 40 horses.

Injector pump rebuilds are very expensive. Before you go this route, there are several other things that should be checked.

You mentioned that the tractor sat idle for several years. In many cases this will cause a small amount of rust to form on the cylinder walls. In some cases the rust can get so bad that it will prevent the engine from turning at all.......which is commonly referred to as being a "stuck" engine.

Since your engine seems to be spinning over just fine, I'd venture to guess that you've lost the seal between the rings and the cylinder wall.

The fastest way to check this is to remove the injectors and then plug the holes so that no debris can enter the engine while you're working on it.

Insert a compression test gauge into the first injector port, then turn the engine over with the starter a full five revolutions. The compression test gauge will record the highest pressures produced during those five full revolutions.

Continue this process one cylinder at a time, recording your results on each cylinder.

A diesel engine will not fire unless there is sufficient compression to produce the heat needed to cause the fuel to burn. Low compression will prevent the engine from firing.

A good compression tester is a handy thing to have around.......but there's no need to buy one. Most mechanics own one.......but it has to be designated for diesel use. Gasoline engines don't produce nearly as much pressure as a diesel.

Should you discover a low compression pressure, your solutions are limited. It may be possible to get a good seal between the rings and the cylinder wall by pouring a bit of kerosene into each cylinder and letting the tractor sit for a few days. Just pour it in through the injector port opening. Pour about a half-cup of kerosene on the top of each piston. This will help loosen the rust, possibly helping to cure the low compression problem.
