I'm not familiar with the type of blower you have but is it chain driven off of a PTO or hydraulic driven?

You mention running the blower from your FEL hydraulics.

If it is a hydraulic driven blower, your tractor does not likely have enough hydraulic gpm to drive the blower sufficiently. Most hydraulic driven, tractor mounted snow blowers require a minimum of 16 gpm and your tractor is rated at about 6 gpm.

Your mid-mount PTO runs at about 2300 rpms, but it would be difficult, if not impossible to put together a PTO linkage from your mid-mount PTO to the front of your tractor and have it work the way you would want it to.

Murf, likely has the best solution in mind....as usual.

I would be very suspicious of this method. Growing up on a farm in southern Idaho as a kid, I trapped hundreds of gophers. In those days, the farmer gave you $0.25 for each gopher tail and then you could take the tail to the local conservation office and get another 2 bits.

I learned all the tricks to catching gophers and sometimes when I ran into one that was too cagy to catch I would try to smoke him out. We had an old Massey Ferguson tractor that had a manual choke and we would hook up 3 inch flexible hose to the tractor muffler, pull out the choke and put the smoke to him. We would step back and could see exactly where his tunnels were by watching the smoke seep up through the ground. It was always amazing to see the complicated runs they made, how far they went and the many complex intersections.

In my opinion, by the time the gas mixture found it's way to where the little bugger actually lived, it would be too weak or not the right mixture to explode. And then you never know if you got him or not.

The only method I believe in is the trap. When he is in the trap and dead, you got him. Same with the moles we have here. All sorts of stupid concotions people sell to get rid of moles. But the only thing that I know that truly works is a trap. I get so obsessed with trapping the little buggers, I keep track of how many I kill every year with a grease pencil out on my fence. It's my wall of honor! My neighbors laugh at me, but I don't have any ugly mole hills any where on my 2 acres....or if I do, it's only for a day or two and then he is a grease mark on my fence! :)

How wide do you want to path? A small dozer will typically have a blade 5-6 feet wide, probably about right for a woods path. I would just flag where you want the path to meander and have him blade in a path, filling in the low spots from the higher spots and when he's done roughing in that path bed, he can just tip his blade a bit and make a couple of passes and crown the path a bit if most of the area is flat. If the land has some general slope to it, I would try to build the majority of the path with a slight tip one way or the other and not mess with a crown. A good dozer operator can take a look at your ground and advise best.

I would then spread 3/4 minus crushed rock because when it settles down it locks into a nice solid path bed, where pea gravel is a pain because it is always moving around and difficult to walk on.

Place a bench every so often and enjoy it!

Murf,

The ToolCat looks like a very interesting unit. Why didn't I know about it when I bought my NH Skidsteer that I use for a variety of jobs but primarily for snow removal for my place in Idaho? In looking at the specs of the ToolCat it looks like the hydraulics will pump at 28 GPM where my Skidsteer will pump at only 15 GPM. Does that sound right? I run a big 2 stage snow blower on my Skidsteer and it takes some pretty good hydraulics to run it and the Skidsteer powers it right along but often times will bog down a bit when I'm doing 18 inches of heavy snow. But it looks like the ToolCat would even do better at that. Is that the case for you when you hook a good sized 2 stage snow blower to it?

I have a bunch of other attachments for the NH that sounds like they would hook right on to the ToolCat but it would be even more versatile.

I know I'm off topic here and you probably already knew this or have now figured it out, but when your FEL is loaded you should have some ballast on the rear like a boxblade or such.

Sometimes when I'm lazy and know I am going to only do one load, I won't put a ballast on the rear but when I do this, I drive the tractor with the FEL very close to the ground and if it begins to tip I immedately drop the FEL to the ground and with the weight off the tractor it will settle right back down.

There was a similar question on this topic just a while back with the same sorts of disagreements as well.

R-4's will tear lawns and leave impressions in most but the very firm and dry lawns and in my country (the Great NorthWet) that's all but about 60 days a year here.

I have turfs and I never lose traction in the wet grass, which again in this country is most of the time.

To me, traction in most conditions is all about friction and the more rubber you have in contact with the surface the more friction or traction you will get. In mud and very loose soil, lugged tires will help, but for most homeowners those conditions are rare....and even then a lugged tire will usually slip.

I agree with Murf on this one again, get turfs and you will not be disappointed.....the best all around tire for the average homeowner you can get on a CUT.

I 'spose there is room for preference with this issue, but I will go with Murf's, because he runs a bunch of different equipment, with a bunch of different operators in a bunch of different conditions and he finds turfs win the day....every day. Good 'nuf for me.

Larry,

I agree with Frank, go with a Kubota hoe. The matching and warranty issues would be a big issue for me too. I really don't think you would notice the HP difference anyway.

You can have the mower attached while the hoe is on, but I would think with the hoe hanging off the back would be a big nuisance.

I have a Woods landscape rake and like it for certain things but found I could never adjust it for consistancy. It was always digging too deep and carrying too much material or when I adjusted the top link for a less aggressive digging action, it did nothing but rake. I tried adjusting the digging action by raising the 3pt a bit, but I never could find just the right height either...it was always too high or too low.

I always thought having the guage wheel assembly attached would help alleviate this problem but never got around to it and now never use my rake as all of my landscaping chores are done.

I have a hard time understanding how one could use a landscape rake to move snow with it. I know I would just have the same problem I did when I was trying to shape my landscaping.

I do have a MMM, but not sure that would make much difference with the traction issue would it? I'm sure if I had bar tires on my BX, I could mow my lawn in 2WD, but I also know it would tear it up even more.

I have 2 separate lawns at my place. One is my "show lawn" around my house and the other is a lawn around my shop which also extends into a bigger 1/2 acre play area. I cannot use my turf-tired BX on my "show" lawn at any time, because it leaves noticeable impressions in wetter conditions. On my other lawn, I use the BX and it creates fairly minor, but noticeable scalping when the lawn is wet in the spring time or fall. This lawn also has some minor slope, and if I am stopped and try to go up a slight incline in 2WD the back tires spin and I have to put it into 4WD. I'm sure with bar tires, it would not spin, but then I would not be happy with all of the scalping early and late in the year.

So...I leave it in 4WD 80% of the time and it does everything I ask it to, even when I take it out into the woods.

I have a daylight basement shop below a guest house and the only way I have found to control humidity is with a dehumidifier. I also live in very wet country so it is a must.

The dehumidifier I bought has a pump that pumps the water into my sink drain so I never have to empty the resevoir.

I get about 1 gallon per day and the shop stays at about 50% humidity even at that. Before I put one in you would not know I have high humidity as it is not evident any where, but for the hyrgometer. It's a bit expensive because it costs about $30.00 per month to operate.

Not that I am aware of. And even if you could with an aftermarket unit, I wouldn't do it. The frame just isn't heavy enough to accomodate a hoe.

Ditto Joel's and Art's remarks. You would be most happy with what you want to do with an L series. A heavier frame is critical to a lot of jobs you would want to do. My personal preference would also be a hydro.

WH,

Use a sleeve post driver that has been suggested. With the type of dirt you have, 3 or 4 slams with it and it's in. Lay out the posts where you want them and you can put one down in about every 2 minutes and in in about 5 or 6 hours and you're done.

I speak from experience. As a kid I lived on a cattle ranch in SW Idaho and built miles and miles of 4 strand barb wire fences with steel posts pounded into very rocky soil. With a post driver, you can even put a steel post in some very rocky, difficult conditions. Get the heavy duty posts, as your fence will stay tighter and last longer.

Don't do it with an auger, because you will never get the dirt packed back in tight enough to hold the post steady. Only use the auger for your cedar corner posts or for the stretching points. Using a FEL would require 2 people and you can do it faster with a post driver.

This thread brought back a lot of memories!!

Mike,

My response may be too obvious and you may have already tried this but you did not mention it.

Lift your hydraulics all the way up, and then try to change your dial. If you leave it on 4 overnight, the MMM and your 3pt will gradually lower and when the MMM lowers to your mower setting the weight prevents you from moving the dial until you raise it all the way up again.

As to the MMM not seeming to lower beyond the 4 setting, check your hydraulic governor. There should be a dial that allows the hydraulics a fast release or slow release. If it set for too slow of a release, your hydraulics may not go beyond a certain point.

I'm north of you a couple of hours in Olympia and got up to white ground and snowing. We live on Puget Sound at sea level and still got snow on April 19th. Enough already!

And I had plans to get a lot of work done on my tractor today...oh well, another day.

Murf, I had ruled out me trying to ream out the arbor hole with a drill. I've tried similar things before and when the hole is already in something, trying to make it bigger, especially in hardened steel, just jerks you all around....would likely break my wrist! :)
