Beagle and Peters--

The model that I looked out had a FEL, MMM, and a rear PTO/ class 1 3 point hitch. As you say, it looked like the Green, Orange and Blue models I have looked at. The price was higher than any of those models, but maybe my price info is a bit out of date for the other models.

If I understand correctly, the Legacy's performance would be equivalent to the corresponding Green, Orange, and Blue models. Is that correct?

Congrats to you and your wife. Know that you are justifiably proud, and are comtemplating all the great things your new family can do together.

Before you leave the hospital, see if they will lend you a shop manual on child raising. I'm sure they have one somewhere . . . or maybe not. :-)

I've been watching your posts over the last few months, and have read the frustration and anger in your posts. To me, this layoff thing is getting the best of you, and you need to do something about that. My advice to you regarding moving, starting a new job/career, and taking risks based on your knowledge of your abilities is based on probably 25+ moves, first as an Army brat and then as an Army officer, and three career changes coupled with moves. In general, nothing worthwhile is without risk, so don't let risks/problems concern you per se. Just estimate the risks/problems carefully. Suggest the following:

1. Get real with your wife. Tell her about your fears, listen to her about her fears. Tell her what you feal are the positive aspects of the new job/locataion, and listen to her version of the same. Often, my wife would suprise me in saying that what was a fear of mine about her well-being was in fact not a concern of hers at all. You need to be honest with each other, and listen to what she is saying and not saying. My guess is that, together, you make a much stronger team that you do as individuals. She balances your weaknesses, and you hers.

2. Your daughter will be a problem, but despite what she thinks, it won't be the end of the world. I certainly agree with the suggestion about not moving during the middle of the school year. Summer moves are the best by far. Talk to her the same way you talked with your wife. Listen to your daughter's concerns--they are very real to her. In the end, however, you have to do what is best for the entire family.

3. If the risks seem worthwhile (not necessarily minimal), go for the interview. Nothing is as bad or as good as it seems, so go back to paragraph one above. You seem to be the kind of guy that can make his own breaks. Good breaks come to those who prepare for them and then seize the opportunity.

4. You also appear to be a guy who has marketable skills, is good at what he does, and is not shy about saying what he thinks about his ability. Those are good traits to have at job hunting/interviewing time. IMHO, you also seem to get hotheaded/go on a toot at times. My advice would be to downplay that aspect of your personality at interview time.

4. Assuming you are inclined to take the offer if certain conditions are met and the interview results in a reasonble job offer (surely they won't meet all your wants), confirm the deal with your wife, and get on with it.

So, to summarize:

The 1500 is at least as reliable mechanically as its brethern, although its operating characteristics may not be quite as smooth as its brethern;
The 1500 costs less than its brethern;
The 1500 can perform the same kind of tasks as its brethern, but the implements it uses may be somewhat smaller, thereby requiring a bit more time to accomplish the same task; and
The 1500 may be a bit more maneuverable than its brethern.

I appreciate your (and the others who joined in) comments and candor. Now all I have to do is find the $. I'll check with the wife for a loan.

I have been looking at CUTs with the local Kubota dealer, but primarily at a BX2230 and a BX1830. I had not considered a BX1500.

I'm wondering if the 1500 is enough of a tractor for my needs. I would use the tractor for mowing (1/2 acre finish cut one time/week; 1 acre rough cut one time/month), add an FEL for light homeowner use, and occaisionally pull lightweight trailer with a 1500 pound load. I don't think I'd put more than 5 hours a week on it, and usually fewer than 2.

Is the BX1500 enough of a tractor to meet those needs, or do I need to kick it up a notch?

Any advice would be welcomed.

The problem is not confined to mice.

Squirrels found a lawn tractor that I had covered with a tarp and parked for the season. They built a nest in it (complete with a bird carcass when I discoverd it), and got so hungry they knawed through several wires of the ignition wiring harness. Major pain to fix.

Have not tried mothballs yet; we'll see. I just love them little critters.

If read your post correctly, $9K invested in a mutual fund will be worth $304K in 18 years.

Sir, please tell me the name of that fund. Assuming it was a legitimate fund, I would love to risk 9K with the chance to make $304K in 18 years. Perhaps there was typo, and you meant to write $30K in 18 years?

You may recall that $9K earning 7% per year will be worth $18K in ten years ("rule of 7"). I haven't bothered to figure out what your hypothetical fund would have to return to go from $9K to $304K, but it must be a pretty hefty percentage. Would love to know about a fund that has that kind of performance.

I'm convinced. I think I'll be patient and continue to look for the right stuff. No sense in getting something I won't be happy with, even if the price is OK, which, apparently, this is not. Lose/Lose.

I don't mean this to be nasty, but . . .

If your dealer knew of the problem of non-aligned holes, shouldn't that have been an item of inspection by the dealer prior to turning the new tractor over to you--sort of a "dealer prep?" Or, do dealers just expect you to find stuff that is wrong, and then convince them to fix it?

Again, I'm not trying to start a fight between you and your dealer, but it sounds as if you did not get good service. Or, do I not understand how tractor dealers work?

Do you mean that the devive on the trailer is a .30 caliber weapon (it looks like a Browning M2 .5 caliber heavy barrel MG, currently in use the Army)? Or are you describing the device on the front of the ATV--it's difficult to see clearly.

Agree with Ken, although E-bay is not the problem. It's the people who use E-bay that you have to watch.

E-bay is used by crooks to unload stolen items. I have personal experience with stolen bicycles being subsequently offered for sale on E-bay as "good deals."

The usual caution applies: Let the buyer beware.

The "Beagle butt" problem you cite is, I think, caused by the dog's anal glands, located on either side of the rectum, becoming full of fluid/material. The dog drags his hind end in order to scratch/relieve the discomfort. The accepted technique for humans to releive the pain is to "express" the glands. Now, that's a really fun job.

Suggest you check with your vet to ensure I'm not confused, and to learn the ins and outs of helping your dog "express himself."

If you need to get a feel for your asking price, check out the local competition. Call competitors and ask for a estimate to do your lawn. Specify what you want done, and ask for a price for a one-time only, and then a contract deal. You might want to have the work accomplished, and watch the operation closely to see what is done, how it is done, how many people/what type of equipment is involved, and how long it takes to do each task.<br>

Use this information to determine what your costs/rates will be, and to determine if you can compete fairly in the local business environment, and how long it will take you to break even, etc.
