Here is a picture of the 3PH stabilizers on a L3400.
Each one consists of a drilled square tube/square bar and are used as rkleypas noted.
If you are going to change implements often, you might want look into the 'telescoping lower links' which allow a couple of inches of movement to aid the attachment of 3PH implements. Your Operators Manual should have more info.

Even small stumps can be pretty tenacious.
Option #1 is to give then some time to rot and forget them. This process is accelerated by moisture and nitrogen (fertilizer).
Option #2 is really remove them with now the FEL, digging below the main root mass. This may mean 'working' the whole area if the stumps are closely spaced and the roots are intertwined. Once the stumps and attatched roots are freed from the soil, you can hand pick them or use a 3PH rake to gather them up.

If you want a garden in the area, option #2 would be best. If you just want a grassy area, fertilizer, lime and grass seed would encourage decomposition and save a lot of work.
If you think there might be a lot of undesireable growth, Roundup or another herbicide might be applied first, then the seed after the recommended waiting period.

AV8R,
I used the FEL and a Land Pride rake to smooth my 1600' driveway and spread 50 yds. of fill over a 50X80 parking area. Tom's right about the learning curve.

If possible, begin with the tractor/blade at the angle/grade you want to maintain.
Go slow.
On a area with a constant grade, like your parking area, work from different directions, if possible, to smooth it faster.
Do try the FEL to get things close first, Tip bucket down some to cut the high spots, control the depth with the bucket angle only, not the lift arms. Don't lower the bucket all the way and try to use it as a 'dozer, that puts too much strain on the FEL as the bucket is against stops and unable to absorb shocks.

My manual recommends back-dragging with the loader bucket to keep things smooth and safe! Check your manual for advise on this. Use the loader in float position, bucket curled up for most agressive smoothing. Fill the bucket if you need more cutting/compaction.

Go slow, seems to me the fill needs a little time to flow, and this also lets you control the depth accurately.

The rake I use has 'depth wheels', which helps some to keep the tines from cutting too deep. Looks from your pics you are getting pretty close, try smoothing off the high spots only, at low speed with an angle in the rear blade, or by back-dragging with the bucket. On my drive, I use the rake only for cutting/filling, as large rocks make precise use of the FEL difficult. But I back-drag extensively to compact and smooth things out, usually with a large concrete weight in the bucket.
Go slow.

Info about your terrain, driveway would make answering easier, but here's some general info anyway.

1) Brush cutters are horsepower hogs! Up to 1" stems on even ground you can probably use one of the lighter cutters. Rough ground or old stumps, stems to 2" etc, a medium duty cutter with a stump-jumper would be better.

2) I can't say enough good things about hydro. Smooth starts, auto-braking, full power at creep speeds are some advantages over manual transmissions. Tractor hydro is not like an atomobile automatic transmission. Hydro uses a variable displacement hydraulic pump - hydraulic motor pair to power the output gears.
You still get a clutch, and 2 or more 'speed ranges' to operate in. Basicly, you set the speed range and throttle, then use the foot pedal(s) to control speed and direction. Excellent for rear snow-blowing as full power is available to the blower even when you creep through a big drift. When starting in mud or snow, or on a hill, hydro is much easier than chutch-and-shift (or chutch-and-spin/lurch).
Good maintenance of filters and fluid is a must for trouble-free hyro longevity. Parts are expensive, but check the cost of splitting the tractor to replace a clutch and throwout bearing.
Search the topics with keyword 'hydro' for a lot of info.

3) I don't know. Hydrostatic drive has been in use for many years, so some of the utility farm tractors may have it. Check for 'live PTO', the PTO on some old models may stop when the clutch is depressed.

Get some seat time at local dealers. Kubota and Deere usually will let you try a tractor on their lot. It will at least give you a baseline for comparison, and let you get to know your dealer (you'll be buying supplies and parts).

Welcome to the board. If you look at the
'Size Tractor Needed' Forum here, you'll
find a wealth of good info.

My own preference is to go larger, but you have to keep agility, cost, and storage issues in mind. Do you have enough 'tractor tough' jobs in mind to justify the larger machine? I've found inexpensive MTD mowers adequate for lawn mowing, if you replace one every 6 years the cost is still under $300/year.
If you do get a CUT, you'll be suprised at the number of things you'll use it for!

Unless you must keep your sodium intake extremely low, I don't think a 'standard' water softener will add much sodium to your diet. If your water contains 120mg/l calcium
(300mg/l CaCO3) you'll be ingesting around 60mg sodium per liter of water you drink (1.8mg/ounce). Compare to 190mg for a tablespoon of ketchup (380mg/ounce, approx. 12,540mg/l).
The seemingly large quanities of salt used are because the concentration of sodium must be very high when the water softener is purged of accumulated calcium and magnesium.

I believe battery chargers used for large battery banks in solar and diesel generator applications are 'smart' and have a conditioning phase where they slightly overcharge the batteries to ensure they are all as similar as possible.
I don't know if the trickle charging of individual batteries in the bank can achieve the same results, but I don't think it will hurt anything. I wonder after a number of discharge/charge cycles if the 'off' batteries revert to their original condition.

I found the link (below) and one thing that's important is the pump must be fully submerged for best life. It is rated for continuous or intermittent operation, but limited to 10 evenly spaced starts per hour. Bearing life is 30,000 hours, so check your wiring and controls. Is the basin it is in is too small?<br>
Perhaps the float or pressure switch is sticking or improperly set, causing over-heating.<br>

With a greater flow the implements would move faster, but the force applied is controlled by the pressure the pump can supply. If both tractors can supply the same pressure, then the one with more GPM couldn't move anything heavier than the one with less flow. You would get more work done with the larger pump, but only as a result of quicker lifting and dumping action.<br>

An interesting perspective, Grinder.
There have been several comparisons of America's economy to that of 'Third-World' countries, especially as to the importing of finished products, and the shift from a manufacturing to a 'service based' economy.
One effect of inexpensive imports has been an overall steep decline in quality, especially in clothing. In smaller towns it is impossible to buy a USA manufactured outfit(shoes, socks,pants,shirt,underwear) and the imported stuff sheds buttons, zippers break, seams unravel, eyelets and soles of the shoes come loose. In the meantime the importer, distributor and retailer make hefty profits, so an item that originally costs 10% of a US manufactured one sells for 50-80% of the 'quality' price.
Sorry for the rant, but I get so pissed-off listening to the politicians, economists, and businessmen praising globalization and free trade while Americans lose good wages, benefits, and in some cases even the option to quality!

The mid PTO must be able to handle the full engine power, otherwise it would break if you ever plugged the mower with heavy grass. Torque would be a lot less than the 540 RPM rear PTO, and some mfgs. use a special shaft spline. <br>

For my Kubota(not a 7800), Starting procedure is:<br>
Sit down in the seat.<br>
Transmission in neutral.<br>
Cruise control lever in OFF position.<br>
PTO disengaged.<br>
Clutch FULLY depressed. <br>
Turn key to first detent, wait for glo-plug light to go off.<br>
Turn key to engage starter, release when started.<br>

If it died when you left the seat, it sounds like the PTO is engaged or the cruise lever(if available) might be just a little on. There is a few second delay deadman switch that kills the engine when PTO is engaged and there is no weight in the seat(or CC is on). Put the transmission in neutral and fold the seat foreward to use PTO driven chippers, generators, etc that do not require the operator to be on the tractor.<br>
On mine the PTO is activated by a small lever towards the right rear of the seat, behind the 3PH lever. Has some gear icons next to it as DRankin noted.<br>
The cruise lever is on the left of the seat, if you have it.<br>
One other little trick some mfgs. are pulling is a brake sensor that will prevent starting unless the brake is on, but I don't think this applies.<br>

That seems like a fair price, I paid a little more here on the east coast for almost exactly the same equipment. You might get the HD bucket with the skid-steer type attachment if you plan to use forks or other FEL-mounted equipment. If you're going to use it hard, you might look at the replaceable cutting edge option, it reverses for more wear, and you don't have to cut and reweld when it is worn out.

You are right on the money with your specs, 8.3 GPM for the hydraulics and 4.9 for the steering pump. But what I didn't make clear was that ItsGotToBeGreen mentions 3 gallons capacity referring to (I thought) KubotaGuy's B7800HST. It has to have more hydraulic capacity than that! Specs show 9.5 GPM for the B7800HST. Yikes!
