I'm going to replace a 12" plastic corrugated culvert under my driveway with a 15" double-walled one. The top of the old one is maybe 18" below the pit run drive. Although the old one stood up to fuel deliveries, farm equipment, and even an occasional concrete truck, the BIG trucks that deliver hen manure crushed it down some. <br>

I have re-graded the outflow area and can now put it down about 24" deeper ( 36" inches of cover ). Will this be OK?<br>

Is there a formula or rule of thumb to use? How does the plastic compare to corrugated steel? I've noticed most supply yards just carry the plastic culvert now.<br>

I use the Kubota 15-40 year round. My L3130 has 775+ hours (in 2 years) with no problems. Stick with it, keep your receipts for filters,oil etc. If you do have a mechanical problem, you will be less likely to have warranty problems.<br>

I did use my credit card through PayPal. The $1.50 was charged to my card account for the special security code before PayPal would accept it for payment to you. The code appeared in my snail-mail billing, so I was delayed in renewing my membership. PayPal offered no 'free' options in using my card.

My personal feeling on this deal is you're probably going to end up paying more for the used tractor and off brand FEL than buying new with 10-20% down and 0% financing for 36 months. Transport can cost $1.50-$3.00 per mile, you'll have some serious bucks in the new folding ROPS, 400 hour service is right around the corner, and, IMHO, a used FEL not from the tractor manufacturer is worth exactly zero dollars.
Check with your 'friendly' local dealer(s) on a tractor/loader package and do the math to see how close the total costs are. Perhaps you can get a free 50 hour service or other perks.
The L3130 HST is an awesome CUT, I have over 550 hours on mine with no problems.

Be sure to take test drives at your local dealer. In my personal opinion HST is the only way to go.

Here it was supposed to be cloudy, 50% chance of rain.
Not a real cloud all day!
Roundup says 2 hours working time before rain, I don't know about generic glyphosphate but imagine it is the same. I guess once it dries, it has done its work. Do you buy in bulk, an if you do what is the savings? I love Roundup but at over $40 for 2 quarts of 52% I use it sparingly.
Hope your investment didn't get washed away.
Of course when you want a burning permit it won't rain for weeks!

I'm not saying (by my pics) that this is the 'ideal' machine for this kind of work. A real skidder or a larger machine with a backhoe would be a lot faster, and the skidder, with a lot of operator protection, much safer. But with some time, planning, and an eye to safety, it is possible to do some serious excavating with the L3130HST/723FEL
Be real careful in the woods, a dead top or branch falling 40 or more feet could ruin a nice day.
I bought the chains for winter use clearing my driveway, but they are real handy with the clay soil, and really help in the woods, as small downed trees and branches are very slippery. I did get one flat at 510 hours, driving over a dead spruce that I knew I should have avoided. Cost $16 and a lost afternoon to fix the puncture in the rear tire. Last fall I had tubes put in both fronts, as I was losing air in really rough going. No problems since then.
A 24" oak log 16' long probably weighs around 3000#, too much to lift with this size machine, though you probably could roll it up onto a low trailer. A 12" X 16' oak is more like 750#, should be easy to lift with 2 hooks welded near the sides of the bucket. If you weld these on, don't do what I did and put them too close to the sides, keep back 6-8" or so, as when I roll the bucket back, the chains tend to slip off the edge. The main problem I find in the woods is the relatively low ground clearance, around here 'hardpan' is around 22" down, and if it is wet the 'topsoil' won't always support the machine.
Have fun with your new machine, and work safely. Give yourself time to become comfortable on your tractor before trying any demanding tasks. Loader work can quickly upset your machine if you are not especially cautious. Use a counterweight and set the rear tires as wide as possible, my dealer set-up was narrow and Very unstable.

Use ONLY hot-dipped galvanized, stainless steel, copper, or silicon bronze fasteners on ACQ treated lumber. Steel bolts are OK only if 1/2" or larger diameter. Don't use aluminum in direct contact, see link below.

I think shear pins/slip clutches are to protect the attachment from too much torque, wheather from overload or shock load. The 'protection' they give the tractor is only incidental to this. As your tractor is bogging down, but there is no shock load, a shear pin weak enough to break at the available torque of your PTO would might be very frustrating, and an inexpensive slip clutch might not last long. Either would tend to reduce the total available power to your chipper, if sized to prevent the problem you mention.<br>
However, my Puma snowblower's drive shaft has shear pin protection built into the universal joint. It seems sized about right for my 24 PTO HP, in that as the tractor starts bogging the pin will shear. Part# 6545. This takes a standard 1/4 X 2-1/2 NC bolt and Nylock nut. You might look into it, but Puma parts are premium priced. Otherwise, have you tried feeding bare (branchless) wood in occasionally to help clear the needles? Spraying the inside of the chute with ArmorAll or PAM? Or maybe just shutting down on a schedule to clear the chute? I don't think you'll hurt your tractor if this only happens very occasionally, but stalling under full load won't do it any good, either. Just for the hellofit I just tried my L3130HST in High range, with loader and counterweight. It sounds as if your pedal/transmission may need adjusting, as from 1600 to max RPM I was able to start smoothly and speed up nicely on hard level ground, though power was definately marginal at the low RPM. I'd be giving my dealer a call...

This is a copy of my 01May2004 response to a similar question:

I am the satisfied owner of a L3130HST, now with 396 hours since mid August 2003. The machine has been 100% rock solid so far. Check out my pics and previous posts or for more big (slow on dialup connection) pictures see the link below. Just remember a CUT is not a bulldozer and work slow and safe.

The only thing I would change is that the machine now has 468 hours.
A serious test drive of several competing models/brands is always a good idea. A single machine will probably not do all your tasks to perfection. My feeling is the 3130 size (Deere, Kubota, New Holland) are at the max for mainly lawn work, at least I wouldn't want to cut my lawn (~2.5A) with one, or drive over my leach field either.

Sorry about that link, it used to be free.
If you're getting that much sediment, I'd certainly get a complete water test, I had a 12' deep dug well for 8 years and never plugged my el-cheapo Sears inline filter, electric water heater lasted 17 years!
I can't think why there are timers in the system, unless the well pumps dry if the holding tank is pretty empty. Do you have any idea how deep the well is?

With 400+ hours on my L3130HST, the range shifting is a lot easier than when the machine was new, but occasionally is still 'sticky', especially in 4WD.
Here's some tricks I've found to make the changes as easy as possible.
1) Make sure you need to change ranges. If going from L to M or H, bring the machine to a stop with the brakes. If you're only going 2MPH in L, why change up?
2) Operate the engine in its power range 2000-2700 RPM, this generally leads to easy shifts.
3) When stopped, if you have trouble with a 'hard lever' releasing the brakes or moving the steering wheel a tad can let the gears move just enough to make the shift easy.
4) Don't shift while moving, and if you use the method on page 36 of your manual be sure to pause and let the gears stop before completing the shift. You may damage the gears otherwise.
5) Preselect your lower range. Shift to the proper lower range while you are still on a hard surface rather than waiting till the engine bogs down or the tractor is on soft(er) ground that restricts wheel movement. Wait until you are on hard(er) ground before shifting up.

My opinion is you almost NEVER need 4WD in H range, if you have a load or traction conditions require it, L or M range would give much safer operating speed, and be easier on the gear-train.

So far the thing is bulletproof. See some big pictures of my tractor at the link below, but they are slow to load on a dialup connection.
One small problem I had about 20 hours ago was that some mud and sticks got lodged in the cover by the power steering linkage and popped the rubber boot off the ball joint. I cleaned the joint out with solvent, regreased and reinstalled the boot. I'll probably check it on the next 50 hour service, and make sure to wash up that area before the mud dries if I get mired again. I don't feel this is a fault in the design of the tractor at all, as I was way too deep in mud and trash for any 'normal' operation.
Before your service, check if you have a Metric Allen wrench to fit the drain plug for the hydraulics, if you have the flush type plug installed on your machine. A decent torque wrench and metric sockets are also handy for getting things tight to specs without danger of stripping or breaking any bolts.

Don't be in a rush to buy until you have driven the models you have in mind. Otherwise, for a lot of dirt moving, brush-hogging and stump-grinding I would think the more horsepower the better. For lawnmowing, you might sell the big tractor and get a smaller one once the big jobs are done.
