Sounds like more crap is going in than is being digested. Could be somebody using too much bleach, drain cleaner of cooking fat etc. Some agency in your area probably publishes a 'Care of Septic Systems' pamphlet. It might be good to find something and hand them out to your tenants.

Most 3ph hoes will fit on any 3ph of the same class provided the lower link arms spread wide enough, which shouldn't be an issue on most compacts. You'll also need rear hydraulics and adequate flow from the pump. A 3ph-hoe mount should have a lock-down to prevent accidental raising of the 3ph--anybody in the hoe seat gets crushed between the hoe console and ROPS. Some mounts help distribute the load.

You should search the archives for articles about the possibility serious damage to tractors from use of 3ph hoes. Mine is OK; others suffer thousands in damage.

I was never able to cut down high spots very well by holding the box off the ground with the 3ph. When the front wheels go over the bump the box lowers and tends to gouge unless the top-link is very extended, in which case it won't cut anything else. The reverse also is true. Unless the 3ph has plenty of float, trying to fill low spots tends to dump the box before the dip as the front wheels go into it.

In the initial work of moving dirt from high places to low I still use the rear cutter sometimes. Other than that I do almost everything with a hydraulic top-link. I don't know if I'd still have a positive attitude about box scrapers if I didn't have a hydraulic top-link. You can't cut, drag and spread on the fly without one.

The link below goes to a twisted demented story this morning on the CBC. I can't tell in the second picture if the tractor is pulling an implement that I've never seen anything like or if it's self-propelled.

Unfortunately with most tractors, if the loader works OK then screens and filters aren't the answer. Some JD's do have a screen in the pressure line that could cause a similar problem but I don't know about this tractor. Sometimes a loader valve that isn't centered will cause the 3ph to stop working but the problem sounds more like a 3ph valve problem. Changing the filter and oil still is a good idea. More on 3ph valves later perhaps.

I think that most foam has weight comparable to alternative fills. Foam traditionally meant rough rides and maybe reduced traction (if the tread can't conform to the surface). I believe newer products are much improved. It's still expensive and complicates changing tires.

Probably why you don't hear more about foam is that most people who use it do so because they have serious puncture problems--operating a tractor with turf tires around thorn trees for example.

I'd keep in mind that blowers are slower than plows--at least in moderate snows. Two to three mph is pretty good for a blower, although managing the birms left by a plow also takes time. Blowers also aren't great on gravel till freeze-up.

When shopping, I'd keep in mind that the ground speed of a blower is limited more by the fan than the pto hp. If it doesn't clear snow as fast as the auger feeds it the blower turns into a plow. If it plows then you've got to slow down. If you've got the power some blowers throw more snow than others and would allow faster ground speeds. Large fan diameters and cupped fan blades are pretty good. Maybe some front blower fans run at different rpm's but I think all rear ones use direct drive from the pto input.

I remember a friend of my father's getting around city water rationing by digging a well for watering his lawn. He was using a large diameter hand auger when we visited. One section of the casings he was going to install sounds like a sand-point.

The best well location may depend on what's going to be done for septic and gray water disposal. I'd keep in mind that temporary arrangements sometimes become permanent except in the mind. We use a composting toilet at our camp but the health unit required us to have a gray water pit. The pit had to be close to the trailer or it would be too deep for the high water table. The dug well had to be at least 100' from the pit, so the well is a bit of a walk from the trailer. We use a hand pump, which is adequate for our needs.

If relief valve squeal can be head when the loader stalls then it is giving you all it's going to. As mentioned, making sure the valves are opened fully and running at pro rpm will help. The curl or the lift on most loaders can lift the front wheels of most tractors. If it doesn't I'd sure check the relief pressure. Some loaders won't go low enough to lift the wheels if the bucket is flat.

I wouldn't expect the bucket to make much difference unless it were considerably larger than standard. The length of the scarifiers will take a bit of power from the curl and the curl up is weaker then the dump circuit. Maybe it's normal, which would be too bad, but we all learn to get the job done with what we have.

I bought a used mid-80's Ford 1710 about 6 years ago. It fit the budget and would do the initial and on-going work just fine. I also expected to put less than 100 hours per years on it after initial projects. It doesn't have some newer features but it hasn't disappointed me. I'd just keep doing what you're doing but not get too caught up in the stats and capabilities. Owners fit themselves to their tractors and there aren't too many jobs that will stop one cold. They'll all do the work but some take longer than others. In going through the stats you're likely learning about tractors, which is what you want to do.

Tractor parts are expensive and a maintenance budget should be provided for any tractor. I'd add about a thousand to the asking price and call it the DPO budget (Dread Previous Owner--Roger's term from years ago). It's a bit of a crap shoot though. Depending on previous use and maintenance, big typical maintenance points are around 2,500 and 5,000 hours, although some clutches become suspect around 1,500. For your information, you might price a clutch job. The crap shoot is that the previous usage and maintenance seldom is known very well.

I only have a hydraulic top-link and the tractor already had a rear valve controlled outlet so it was inexpensive. I have a crank 3ph leveler so the tilt isn't so important. Without a hydraulic top-link, grading with a box scraper will take a bunch of time since many top-link adjustments are needed.

Many building supply places sell 'electrical code simplified' books and one would give requirements for buried branch circuits. It'd likely be something like 27" deep, which allows for 3" of fine sand all around the line and conduit for the up and down sections. Add another 12" depth if it goes under a roadway. Planking over the line reduces the depth by 6". It's good to lay marker tape 1' above any buried line so the next person who digs it up will have some warning.

From the sounds of the previous job, the wiring may be a mess and you could find yourself doing a bunch of unexpected things when an inspector gets a look. Better than burning the house down though.

Normally all hoe equipped tractors have a loader. The bucket should be on the ground to prevent the tractor from pivoting around its front axle. Many hoes are capable of lifting the rear and unloading the stabilizers. The bucket is usually dug in to keep a hoe from dragging the tractor into the hole (or sliding into it if an excavation wall collapses).

I tend to adjust the bucket angle more than the boom when pulling back the stick but normally use both. It all becomes clear with a bit of practice. The hoe probably has a float position on the boom valve. Float can be useful in smoothing trench bottoms.

A worn detent ball in the shifting linkage can create some 'locking' between gears. Excessive pedal free play at the top can cause the clutch to drag even when the pedal is fully depressed, which can cause hard shifting. The PTO shafts on some tractor 'free wheel' a bit--they turn some but aren't powered. Somebody who knows the tractor may be able to say if it's normal.

It could be various things. If it cycles up and down at fairly regular intervals, a leaky poppet valve or improper 3ph linkage adjustment seems a good guess. If the surge or cycling goes away when the flow control valve is turned off then the poppet valve or adjustment is likely the problem. Replacing and adjusting a poppet valve isn't too difficult on most tractors but having a repair manual is a good idea.

A sticking system pressure relief valve can create surges but only during lifts. The valve likely is located in a manifold block on the side of the engine. A pressure gauge and manual procedure is needed for repair and adjustment. A faulty safety relief valve in the 3ph can create drops during lifts.

That's good to hear, and I don't even find concern for the chicken hawk by the chicken rancher unusual. I prefer to see my hawks flying as well. We've never had a house hawk before and it must have been quite an experience.

An ID on the bird is a little difficult since it almost certainly is a juvenile, and as everybody knows kids are confusing. Maybe it thought it was crashing a party.

Thanks Grinder! I doubt the rafters span the short side-walls in this lean-to porch roof but I suppose there could be stubs from the middle of the end rafters to the wall plates, which would be over the door--don't know how much that would load the door frame though. The inspector's idea is that if I have to replace the short door frame studs with longer ones to accommodate a pre-hung door than I might as well make the whole area solid to the wall plate, whether it needs 2x10's or not.

Dang! This whole thing started with an insurance company nattering away about the lack of steps and an exterior door on a front enclosed porch. Few people have front stairs around here. Two other entrances meet fire code. The problem is me wanting to save as much of my wife's flower bed as possible by eliminating landings and handrails. I think I've figured how to do it and it shouldn't be too bad. However, I suppose that my wife's flower bed will blossom with my aggravation if I find two layers of exterior wall covering nailed to the door framing I may have to remove.

The link below goes to a list of salvage yards. I don't know how good it is, but I do know that many yards have little if any parts for compacts. You might try a web search for something like 'used compact tractor parts.'

It might be normal and the solution could be just reducing the ground speed a bit if the tiller is a bit large for the tractor. However, rad screens do have to be blown clean frequently when working in very dirty conditions.
