Thanks for all the responses. They offer a range ot options and I appreciate it.

I have been looking at the tractor from the standpoint of designing in a theft protection device. My thought was a mechanism that shot two hardened pins out from the side of the case through the slots in the wheels. Then I had to figure out a way to make certain the slots were lined up with the pins and decided on spring-loading the pins so that once engaged, the pin would shoot into the slot when it was next in line. This thing got wilder and wilder. I guess partly because years and years ago I had some contact with the Deere experimental farm in Dubuque and know that they'd try anything once.

Anyway, the idea of a chain through the same wheel slot and then around a loader post may be the simplest. I may also look at this anti-car-theft device called the club.

I have several acres of hardpan soil...rocks and clay and sand. With the terrain the erosion is starting to be come a real problem. I'd like to get this in grass.<br>

I talked to the implement dealer about a small disk as I thought I could use that to break up this baked and hardened soil. He's suggesting something he calls a "pasture rennovator." From what I can see, these come in several forms ranging from just what amounts to a scarifier to a combination of a disk and a drag apparatus.<br>

Any thoughts on a "pasture rennovator?"<br>

We see so many messages from customers who are unsatisfied with their dealer, I thought I'd offer a satisfied story.<br>

Saturday my LX5 cutter stopped cutting. Even though it's a slip-clutch unit, a bolt just forward of the gearbox had sheared off. I called the dealer and talked to the salesman. The problem didn't sound like what was described in the owner manual regarding a seized clutch. The salesman insisted on coming out and replacing the bolt as he said it didn't sound right to him either.<br>

Long story short, he drove 20 miles to my place this AM, replaced the bolt and eased the clutch bolts before he drove the now 50 miles to get to the dealership to go to work.<br>

I've got a JD 970, the predecessor of the 990. Mine was built in 1998 and has 1050 hours on it. It's a solid little performer and handles the jobs I have on 14 acres very nicely.

I'm new with a box scraper (JD 970 tractor) and am considering the same sort of problem...I always seem to have the scraper set so high that nothing happens or so low it gouges. The reason I'm doing this is to remove high spots in the drive so putting in low spots is counter-productive.<br>

After considering it, the draft link speed control doesn't seem like it would help as it only speeds or slows the response of the lift, not the incremental changes.<br>
<br>
It seems like the only mechanical help would be a top and tilt kit. The other alternatives are just to keep practicing or a full blown grader....my personal choice.<g> I wonder if I could give it to my wife for Christmas.<g!><br>

The answer is .... it depends.

The Georgia law was just quoted and it clearly states that the easment must be maintained. However, that doesn't mean that the user can be required to pave it and put in street lights. The user is normally required to maintain the easement in such a condition as to not adversely affect the surrounding property.

However, consider an easement which is used once a month for a farmer to get back to his property to mow. The rest of the month he's in the next county. Can you as the landowner require him to mow the easement so as to make it conform to your standards of lawn care? Probably not. If in a month it is so overgrown that it is filled with noxious weeds and pests, then you could perhaps get something done. However, the most likely "something" is to mow it yourself.

It's tough to answer specifics in this venue as the nature of the terrain can significantly impact the problems the landowner is confronting and the solutions available. Again, we're talking the general rule and generally it doesn't apply.

I just want to comment on how nice a person you must be to buy your wife a new tractor. I bought mine a used JD 970 and a Trail Gator to go with it. She prefers the Gator so I usually only get to use the 970.<sigh>

I have a late model 970 with about a 1,000 hours on it. The dealer sold me a LX-5 cutter as the largest the tractor can handle. I'm concerned now that some of our field is terribly rough and the LX5 too light duty to handle some of the wear and tear.<br>

Could the 970 handle a MX-5 and do I need to be concerned?<br>

What's the difference in price between the LX5 and the MX5?<br>

I've read this entire thread. While I certainly wouldn't wish this on anyone, I am left wondering just what your goal is. If you truly are seekling a redress in terms of monetary damages, then you need to seek the assistance of a private attorney to investigate the filling of a lawsuit. If you are simply trying to damage the business enterprise of Lenar, then you need to report this to the Michigan Attorney General so that they can consider whether there are any options that would allow them to move against Lenar (and this warranty group) to close the business.

No matter the motive, posting on an electronic bulletin board doesn't contain any of the elements to either goal.

OTOH, if you simply get a high from telling the story, that's fine too but please realize that it won't really get you to either of the other goals.

BTW, the law is still being decided on the issues of public disparagement of a business in Internet conversation groups. There's a significant set of cases in the Eastern District of NY initially styled as Novak v. APD in which a business has filed suit against people for statements less damning than yours. While I think Novak will likely not prevail, a lawsuit is a lawsuit and lawsuits cost money...even to win in defense.

I've been parking with the FEL bucket essentially level and dropped into float position. However, when it rains a puddle collects in the bucket. I want to avoid standing water as a mosquito breeding ground. Yesterday I curled the bucket way over and dropped it into float.<br>

This morning I looked at the tractor and when I saw the exposed portion of the hyrdaulics for the bucket, I began wondering if parking this way is bad for the seals or other hyraulic components.<br>

So....is it safe for the equipment to roll the bucket forward when I park?<br>

In addition to the 970 (1998 model with 1,000 hours) we bought a 430 loader, a LX5 cutter, a box blade, a rear blade, and a rock rake.

In addition, while at the dealer I saw a Trail Gator and laughingly said I 'd love to have it but my wife would never stand for it. When I told her the story she said, "Go ahead." After stewing about it for a few days, I decided I didn't want to be the first husband in history to deny his wife a Trail Gator. I get to borrow it when I'm training the dogs.

I generally try to follow the advice of those who have gone before me so backing up the hill is what we'll do for starters.

However, I also have to wonder why backing up is better than starting at the top and mowing down. The tractor is a 950 4WD with a 430 FEL pulling a LX5 cutter. I realize I'd have to move the FEL as we go down the hill to both keep it low most of the way and yet to keep it from digging in at the bottom.

The tires are filled.

So, why is backing up safer than heading down?

I've seen 10% and 15% and even 20% cited as discounts from the MSRP for tractors and implements. Would a buyer of a riding mower reasonably expect to get such a discount as well?<br>

There's another model you have not mentioned...the JD 970. I just bought a used one with MFWD for $9,000. It's a 1998 and had just a 1,000 hours on it. I fitted it with a 430 FEL, rock rake, box blade, rear blade, and LX5 rotary cutter. It has a bit more horses than the 790. I've been tickled to death with it. I note that Machinefinder has a few of them from time to time.

I have JD 970 that I just purchased.<br>

The tires have been ballasted with water and anti-freeze.<br>
<br>
I note that the book says to measure the tire pressure of ballasted tires with the valve stem at the bottom of the tire but notes a special guage is needed. The dealer/salesman says to measure the pressure with the stem up. His comment is that this is where the air is.<br>
<br>
A nagging memory of a science class is telling me that the pressure will be the same either way. The simplest ought to be with the valve stem up. Why would the book say valve stem down?<br>

I've been offered a 4x2 Trail Gator with 15 hours on it. Price $5000. This is from a dealer. He took it in trade from a guy that changed his mind and wanted a 6x4. It has front and fender brush guards, receiver hitch and ball, floor mat...no bed liner.<br>
