Hello, I own a '92 JD 4960 mfwd, and love the machine, except that it does not have a precleaner on it. Has anyone 'plumbed' in a precleaner? If so, please email me and tell me about it. Thank you in advance. mail to: trcagle at flash dot net

I have been premixing at less than 30% antifeeze, and the recovery tank is in place. The tractor has an electric temp gauge on it that reads 220 with a loose cap, approaches 250 with a properly fitted 13psi cap while running at a fast idle, and when the engine is under load it climbs over 250. I have never let it boil over with a cap properly installed, I always let it cool down if the gauge staqys over 250.

Can someone give me an opinion on price for a used JD 1070 4wd, w/ front end loader, 90 hours, guy is asking 16k ? Much appreciated. <br>I am close to buying a 4500 same equip, but wouldn't mind saving some money!!

Congratulations Gerald,
You're gonna love your new toy. I'm guessing that if your ground is fairly smooth that the skidsteer (if that's what a skidloader is, and not a bucket/pay loader) will run circles around any of our tractors for loader work. Course a full size bucket loader would too, but those are HUGE. You now have the best of both worlds. A tractor that will cut great and still give you access to pto toys, and a kickass loader for the ultimate price of free99. Be safe with your BX. Todd

If you can lift it, you should have no problem turning and pulling it. I'm assuming it's not reverse turning, but the power required by one 48" should be about the same as another 48". Weight is a good thing as it keeps the tiller from bouncing a lot, but will you need to add weight to the front if you till without the FEL on?

Hey Murf, Last spring my dad wanted to move back the brush border around my back yard. I guess 2acres isn't enough backyard for me to have to cut. Anyway, I locked the belly mower up, put the rotary cutter on, and away he went. 30minutes later I look out back and see my dad waving a mayday at me from behind the pond. Seems he finished expanding my back yard, and decided to add a new patch to it. Since we do cut the area behind the pond about twice each summer(when the pond is just a dry pit that is), there were tire marks that my dad decided to follow. Well, my little 2710 with turfs was in so deep by the time he realized the ground was a swamp and he was just spinning his wheels, that there was water over the axles. Guess who got to wade in with chains and a come along. Had to anchor it to a little 3" tree, drop the cutter, and shove 2x10 boards under the back wheels and lever the tractor up before we got it out. Killed the poor tree, came half out of the ground. Clean up was actually easy since it was so wet, but I'm not gonna do that again! And neither will my dad.

Good advice above. I went with a thrower because even pushing snow over the banks wouldn't solve my problem. Trees in the way near the garage end of the driveway. Snow thrower just kind of tosses the snow thru them. I was wondering what kind of tractor and tires you had. Traction becomes an issue pushing snow, but not nearly as much of one with a snow thrower. My neighbor and I teamed up to clear our other neighbors 300'+ driveway. He couldn't get 10' into it going up the hill with a plow until I made a path with the snow thrower wider than his tires. I made it with turf tires and no chains going up a moderate slope on ice. Not easily, but 4wd and dif lock did it. You can always get heavy ice chains!

I think I'd sell for anything close to 17k with the woods rotary cutter. Probably 16.6 for the tractor, loader, and mower deck. Does anyone think that's unreasonable? There are less than 110 hours on it, and they've been easy hours.

I like the advice everyone above is giving you. Since "bad legs" isn't specific to a doctor, I'm not going to comment on the ergonomic differences between kubota, deere, and new holland. If you have a significant disability, I'd suggest you sit on the tractors for an hour or so before buying anything. My only concern with the comments above is comprable to what I feel when I see a patient who has no insurance and is on Cozaar and Norvasc for BP. They pay over $100/month because that's what samples were in the office when they got started, or because these are the "best meds". I can often change them to a $12/month but equally effective regimen. In your case, I'd hate to see you sell the wife and kids because we all recommended a kubota 7500 or deere 4100 or the comprable NH, when all you needed was a BX. If you do decide to go for a larger tractor, you might want to look at the used market. I've seen several 4100's in the paper here in VT, for a few thousand less than they were new, with very few hours (<200). The prices surprised me because these things run for a really long time, so they don't generally depreciate that much. Steve Carver also might be a great source for prices on "program tractors", and watch the paper. The downside here is that the financing might not be as low. There is nothing cheap about any of these toys, and any of the models suggested are great tractors. A tiller for the BX will run about the same as a rear tine walk behind, and is a lot easier on your legs. If you can get a one used in good shape, that's even cheaper, and with offset, you don't really need it wider than your tracks. A final advantage to small is that we all wind up shoving or kicking these things to move them an inch or so, to hook them to the tractor. The little ones kick easier! Hope we don't cause you to sell the kids.

Did you get a Steinway?? My daughter's birthday is in 2 days, and my father keeps trying to get her to say "grampy" (she'll be 1 on March 1). I keep trying to get her to say "Steinway Grampy". If that's the first thing she ever says to him, I think this may actually work!

I'd keep that letter Craig. It's golden if anything happens, because the bank would argue for their money, and it might be cheaper for the insurance company to give in than argue they didn't mean it was covered in situation X. Since I earn no money from my property, and don't move my tractor, I wonder if maybe I should switch over to Amica like Jeff??? Still, I'm a big fan of being over insured. This way, I'll rest easy if my brother-in-law or somebody ever does borrows my toy. Some things you can never have too much of, insurance is one of them.

I'm not sure, but I think John Deere now owns Yanmar. They used to buy their engines, but the dealer here told me they ultimately bought the company. That would be JD's style. If the company makes a good product, buy it, tweek it, paint it, badge it, and then stand behind it. If I'm correct, then Yanmar is probably a pretty reasonable tractor, or at least it has a good engine. It will never have the resale value of the big three in compacts, JD, NH, and Kubota, but then it probably won't cost as much either. Since you won't have a company of JD's stature standing behing a Yanmar, make sure your dealer is really good! The big three really do stand behind their products, which might be worth some extra money. Sorry I'm not much help here. From curiosity, what do Yanmar's cost near you?
