In addition to the ability to use larger valves, the hemispherical combustion chamber design can yield more efficient combustion action. Chrysler started working with the hemi concept at least as far back as the fifties, with engines under 400 cubes. The 426 was the culmination of the approach and very few 'stock' U.S. motors could touch it for power. Just about anything Chrysler dropped a 426 hemi into made the top 10 fastest production quarter-mile lists in the sixties. A few other makers (including BMW) used hemi (or multiple hemispherical dome areas, 3 in BMW's case) within the combustion chambers of their head designs for this reason in addition to the valve advantages.

It's not all hype, although it's not the only way to skin that cat.

The Optima site lists a spec for the number of deep discharges allowed. The 'red tops' which aren't normally considered deep discharge batteries can still take a limited number of discharges (I think 50?). The batteries sold as 'deep discharge ' (i.e. the yellow tops) can take more - I think it's about 300. So one or a couple of heavy discharges *shouldn't* hurt it - but it will (as was said above) depend on how far down it was drained. If it takes a full charge, holds it's voltage over a reasonable time, I'd say you got away with it just fine. They're tough batteries.

Could be some engine weight in there for sure but I'm thinking it's not the whole 250 lbs or so it seemed at first. Tractor weights are slippery numbers in any case, seems like everyone has a slightly different way to measure.

I should add that I have talked to several folks who have done 'limited' plowing with their hydro CUTs and generally (once they learn how to run a plow correctly) have been very pleased with the results. The operative word is 'limited'.

Also - to do plowing/tillage work most effectively you need 'draft control' on the 3pt, not just position control. Very few CUTs offer that as an option much less as a standard feature. The large-frame JD's 4000's and 4000 Tens can add it as a field-installed option, the mid-size JD's cannot.

The new numbers (once all the Twenty series compacts are out) will make more sense - especially in the context of the whole Deere tractor line.

2x20 series - small compacts
3x20 series - medium compacts
4x20 series - large compacts
5x20 series - small ag utility
6x20 series - medium ag utilty...

etc.,.

For another .02 - You're getting into some questions I've been fighting...

1) You should be able to get a 5105 for less than a hydro 4710 with *equal hours*, but if you think you might want to use a tiller with (or instead of) a plow - a 5105 is too fast in low.
2) When I described my intended duties for a 4710 (to include plow/cultivator tillage work) my dealer immediately told me not to get a hydro - I would "burn it up" (his words).
3) Same dealer said that they see basically only the hydros coming in for repair from folks that really push their small tractors (landscape/construction types) while the reversers just keep running.
4) Same story you got on limited baling, possible but not wonderful.

There's a lot of difference between 'field work' which could mean anything and true 'draft work" ala plowing. An equal-sized hydro will not have the draft power due to losses basic to the system - and will heat up at normal working speeds. Going slower with a plow may not work - plows are designed to work at a certain pace to function correctly. But that is very specific duty - other jobs will have different stories.

Also note that for most effective plowing you should have draft control on your 3 point hitch. Rare in compacts - and possibly discontinued on the new Deere 20 series large frame compacts. (It was optional on the 4710). The 5105, like most larger ag utilities, now comes standard with draft control.

Deere appears to be re-aligning the model number series of CUTs to be more consistent with the rest of their tractors, i.e. the progressively larger 5000, 6000, 7000, etc., series tractors. 4000's will now be large frame CUTs, eventually mid-sized CUTs (todays 4210-4410) will become 3000 series, and smaller CUTs 2000's.

Cab version 4000 Twentys are expected out by the end of the year.

All of the new 4000 Twentys combine 4-cylinder Deere turbodiesels once used in their skidsteers with (mostly) the back end of the ex-Yanmar drivetrains.

Power is up, in some cases way up - especially torque but the rest of the tractor mechanically appears to be 95% unchanged. A few former options have been dropped (no 2WD so hence no sync-reverser versions), a few options were combined into single 'packages' and one or two are now standard.

The 180 Speer sounds interesting, only think I had ever seen was the 220 (which I thought I had read at one time was actually designed for this cartridge - so the jacket style/thickness and tip were all set up correctly). Wonder what the ballistics of that "short" 180 would be?

I call my 356 "almost" big bore since it's "only" 35 caliber. Now that .411-356 mentioned sounds interesting!

There are a couple of companies that make JD QT - to - standard skidsteer (Bobcat style) QT adapters. I believe they run about $500. The adapter goes on and off of the JD loader frame as fast as any JD attachment. But once you have that you adapter - you're open to the world of skid steer implements - lot's of toys to consider. If you're a home fabricator/inventor type - you can even buy the attachment-side mounting plates (about $75) and weld that up to about anything you can dream up.

4710 has a bigger motor (134 vs 121 cu in.) and significantly more peak torque than the 4510. Whether it's worth the extra spare change is your call. Most owners seem to recommend the 4610 over the 4510 for the smaller price difference. I'm planning on a 4710, but will fall back to a 4610 if the local dealers are too proud of the 4710. The 4710 is microscopically less fuel efficient than the 4510/4610 per hp produced.

Gunfighter and MYDOGROY - a couple of questions - those hp recommedations are measured against *drawbar* hp, not engine gross, right? Anyone have a feel (since the mfgs. don't give that number and Nebraska tests aren't done on compacts) for what the compacts can deliver at the drawbar? (It should be something less than the PTO rating). Would there be an even greater loss hydro-to-gear on drawbar than you see in the PTO ratings? And how does MFWD help fudge those numbers?

I'd be real interested in how the 4710 does with a plow myself - it's number one on my short list right now and I'm sure the whole gang at the "farm" will be comparing it's performance with our two-bottom to the Ford NAA that totes it now.

And lastly (real rookie question here - since that plow is the only one I've ever used) - on different size plows (12", 14", 16") - do they just cut a wider swath or also deeper as they get bigger? I always thought both - but reading some of these posts I'm not so sure.

I think it would be fascinating to try to see if some kind of coordinated use could work out to advantage - example using the hyd. top link to change the angle on a box blade to change it's action a bit but having the draft control automatically compensate for the actual bite being taken. However, I could live with just having an "either/or" situation.

What I'll have to find out is if the reason JD won't provide both on the 4000-Ten's is because *their* combination of parts just don't physically fit together - or if it's because there is something intrinsic to their draft sensing system that would be potentially "damaged" by the forces of a hydraulic top link.

If it's the former - then I could order the tractor with draft control, live with "just" manual hitch adjustments until such time as I get ambitious and make up a top-n-tilt system from aftermarket components that do fit.

If it's the latter - well then that will take some thought as to which feature is likely to prove more useful over time in my intended uses. As someone pointed out - you *can* adjust the hitch angles without top-n-tilt. I suppose it could also be said you can mimic the action of the draft control with a deft hand on the position control. At the end of the day, both are just more convenient ways to handle something that can already be done.

OK - Here's the eye-openers. JD Operator's Manual for the 4510-4710.

"Front Axle Operating Capacity" - 992-1102 lb.
"Rear Axle Operating Capacity" - 1984-2205 lb.

So at best, according to these numbers, the combined "operating capacity" is only 3307 lb. - not enough to even hold the tractor itself up! (3450 lb.)

So obviously, something is rotten in Denmark. Either these numbers are flat wrong (plenty of typos in JD literature) - they are the net *remaining* weight capacity (already counting the base tractor weight) - or both.

For what it's worth, the very *next* line in the manual specs lists the "Drawbar Tongue Capacity" as 570 lb. - yet elsewhere in the manual it states that you "should not exceed the following maximums static vertical loads on the drawbar... All Models... 1102 lb."

Aggravating.

Wonder if JD will give me a discount towards a tractor if I proof the manuals? :)

DH83. Let us know how that battery works out. I really like the idea of the "sealed" batteries - and specifically the supposed durability the rolled Optima design. A shame they don't have anything quite small enough (except for doing something weird with two 6v cells perhaps.)

I think that one of the advantages of the bigger Boomers or large-frame JDs is that I should be able to mount and run most of the implements that are 'around the farm' now and used with the old Ford. OTOH some of them might be a bit much for a mid-sized unit. Fairly "large" Brush-hog, rear Woods finish mower, 2-bottom plow, disk, rear blade, rear scoop.

(Least that's my story for the better half and I'm sticking to it.)

I want to get my own attachments - at least for the one's I'll use a lot - but it would be nice to make use of these along the way.
