Mark, negotiations with Kubota over the factory cross threaded screen filter on my BX22 continue. Both the dealer and Kubota corporate (warranty guy) told me that since the screen filter is on the suction line, the worst case is a leak which could introduce air into the hydraulics. So far there are no signs of a leak, but my anxiety about this whole thing remains. At minimum I'm going to ask for a letter from Kubota acknowledging the issue.

Slope issues can surprise even the pros. My neighbor operates a 310E JD backhoe for a living. Not too long ago he was screwing around behind his property, dumping stuff I think. Both our properties back up to a bluff/river, with about 30deg slope down to the river.

He got the JD stuck trying to do something horizontally on the slope, VERY near to a rollover condition. It would have rolled down about 300ft to the river. Two BIG tractors were needed to pull his 8ton rig out of danger. He hasn't tried that again. Wish I'd had my camera handy.

Update on my orig issue. Kubota apparently received my letter documenting the screen fastener issue and contacted my dealer who called me and left this msg -

"Kubota corporate office received your letter and have it documented. They agree with me [dealer], just go ahead and run it. You still have plenty of warranty left. They have it documented in case of any future problems. Feel at ease. We got you covered."

What do you guys think?...should I take their advice or press for a tranny replacement?

I'm a 9 month owner of a BX22. I do many of the things you talk about, though on a smaller scale, less acreage, fewer horses. The advice on going with more HP is always offered, however, in my case I was looking for a combination of maneuverability and capability. I needed a tractor that would easily move in/out of stalls and 48in wide gates in stone walls. The 22 fit my needs perfectly. I haven't found a job yet that I couldn't do with the 22, though in some cases certainly not as quickly as a bigger machine.

These debates rage on and on. It really comes down to you matching your requirements with the tractor. My neighbor owns a commercial JD backhoe rig and uses my 22 around his house/barn frequently to get to areas his bigger rig can't access.

Just sold my JD332 with 3ph and 50in deck for $3600. In excellent condition with almost new tires and battery. Nice tractor, just needed roughly same size machine with more muscle (BX22).

The BXs have a somewhat non std lift arm distance, approx 25in. Wasn't sure if the 26in drawbar would work. Some said yes, some said no. I suspect it would, but I fabricated my own 2in box hitch adapter anyway. Link with pic below.

Can't really give you pros/cons on the rear mount mower. All I've ever used are midmounts. I'm thinking about a midmount for my BX22 for similar reasons, occasional wacking of 1 acre field and some rear yard mowing, but they're pretty pricey so I haven't done it yet. Been looking for a used one. The midmount offers the obvious advantage of not having to remove the backhoe to use it.

Mark, my BX22 FEL will lift the front end every time. If I use the FEL and backhoe in tandem, I can get the entire tractor airborne (carefully).

Widespread scam. I've had my JD332 for sale now about 3mos, sold a couple weeks back. During that time I had 3 of these - hey I'll send you a cashiers check for twice what its worth and you give the rest to me, or my shipper, or my mistress. Mostly broken english. In each case I asked for a phone number to discuss. One guy send me a number and address in Liverpool that didn't exist. Never heard from the other 2.

If it looks to good to be true, it usually is.

I also looked at the Kioti CK as well as the green 790 and 4100 series. All these are fine machines.

I frequently read here of the notion to always buy bigger because you'll eventually encounter a job that your compact can't do. There's certainly merit to that, but not universally. I agree with the 80% notion that Mark offered, because thats pretty much how I approached my situation.

I also got a good deal on the price. The dealer was so interested in my business he drove 100mi to pick up the unit from another dealer, cleaned and inspected, then delivered next day. I didn't get anything close to this behavior from green. Maybe just a local issue.

If you do get the BX, I highly recommend upgrading the BH stabilizer feet to larger HD rubber soled option. As far as I know they don't yet have a cover for the BX22. The BX2200 cover will work, but won't cover the FEL and BH.

I've had my BX22 now for about 4 months. I've used it to pull stumps and bushes, lift heavy rafters to rebuild part of my roof (termites), and, yes, to dig a foundation trench for a detached 3 car garage and workshop.

I adapted a Cat0 Gannon rollover scraper to work with the BX and use it to maintain a 1 acre horse arena. As Mark suggests, you can push or pull soil around with the rear blade even in tight areas like horse corrals.

Which brings me to the reason I bought the BX...its ability to maneuver around my property and replace my 50yr old back as the primary digging and lifting device. With its relatively narrow width it moves in/out of my stone wall gates, so I can bring hydraulic power to all areas of my property. My neighbor owns a JD310D backhoe and borrows my BX for closein work around his home.

It boils down to your needs and intended use. We can argue for days whos the best tractor. IMO, all the usual suspects (JD, NH, Kub, etc) sell excellent products. "...being patient and evaluating options" is definitely the prudent approach. Good luck.

I'm betting the 2200 cover will work also, except for the bh. Other option is to build a cover from scratch with a big tarp, probably cheaper.

...and, I should have added, I'm partial to hydrostats, per my experience with the JD332. JD should have given the 790 a hydro option IMO.

I'll chime in here on top of Mark. I've owned a BX22 now for a couple months and love it. It works perfectly for maintaining my 1 acre horse arena and in/around my enclosed backyard. The width and weight are such that I can move around the backyard without tearing everything up, yet still do some productive tractor work. I bought mine, without mower, for 14.7K. Most other dealers here in SOCAL asking between 15-16K, if you can find one in stock.

As Mark says, the 3ph comes with the BX22 and is easy to interchange with the backhoe after a little practice. It is slightly narrower than category 1 std. I discovered this when I was shopping for a drawbar as a frame for building a 3ph/box hitch coupler. Discussions with several implement makers verified this, but many said they make implements to fit the Kubota subs.

My neighbor, who has a commercial JD410E backhoe loader, borrowed my BX to do some closein work around his house. He was so impressed he's decided to buy one (I wouldn't sell mine) for his landscaping business.

Mark, life with the BX22 is good. Pulled out a small (5in diam) tree stump with it. Had to work it a bit, but it came out. Of course it won't "hoe" with the big boys, but if you soften the ground a bit it will work just fine. Haven't used the loader much yet, mostly the backhoe.

Did you order one? I know they're tough to find around SOCAL. Saw your post on the 3ph. I'm adapting my cat0 gannon rollover to use with the Kubota...I'll let you know how that works.

Tom, good advice, thx. I'll check with Gannon on the HP range for the scraper though, as you say, it is very sturdy. I plan to pin the lower arm to all 3 hinge points, the 2 existing and the new one I'm adding to handle the extra width of the cat1 arms. Will require about a 5in pin and should spread the stress of the extra HP.
