What would have to brake or what seal go bad or ?<br>
to allow pump to pump alot ! of hydraulic fluid<br>
from tranny/main fluid area into the engine itself<br>
so much so that engine blows the excess hyd. fluid out overflow tube from engine 98? L2250 shuttle shift<br>
with kubota loader. Thanks

I have a 1952 8N that over the years has devloped a weaker slower 3PH movement. The problem with mine is the O-ring as Tom has identified. The fact that your 3PH will not go up as high as it used to my be due to the O-ring also.

The oil used to operate the 3PH is the same oil that lubricates the transmission and rearend. The manual recommends you use Ford's hydraulic oil. The transmission/rearend takes 5 gallons of oil. There should be a dip stick for the transmission oil level, I think it is on the right side right near were the rear axle housing joins the transmission case.

This coupling wasn't identified as a flaw in the design. It is better for an expensive part to wear out or fail than it is for an expensive hard to replace assembly to go. My brother has been a mechanic for this dealership for about 10 years over that time I have asked many questions about the Ford/NH compacts. I do not remember any negitive things or warts about the 1700, 1900, and 2100 series tractors.

The only thing that coems to mind is a friend of mine has a 1910 that needed some expensive engine work because when he was brush hogging a branch must have hit the cooling system petcock. This allowed it to vibrate open and he lost
the coolant. Having owner the tractor for a long time he didn't pay any
attention to the temp. gauge and over heated the engine. This is just one of those freak things that can happen.

I drooled over a new tractor for several years also, so I know what it is like to be already to go especially when there is one sitting right there waiting to be taken home. But, in your case I think I would wait for the next series to hit the market. I am sure there are more people who haven't had any problems with the model tractor your are looking at than there are people who did. The big unknown is how much better are the next generation tractors. I think I would wait if there is not a big difference in price.

I also went through the oredal of comparing the new compacts to my 1952 8N, for sevearal years. I did purchase a new tractor this past July. When comparing the compacts to the 8N you can't go by horsepower alone. Weight is also a factor.
The 8N is 2WD, if you compare a compact of the same HP and weight in 2WD you will have to look at a larger HP compact tractor. The rear tire width difference between the compact's and the N series tractors is another thing you have to get used to. The 8N is a very stable wide stance tractor.

When you add 4WD to the mix the compact tractor of equal horsepower to the 8N starts to look beter. 4WD allows you to do things you only dreamed of with a 2WD tractor. You now can back out of situations especially with a bucket full of dirt a 2WD tractor can not.

I looked at the blue, green, and orange tractors compaired all the features, prices, and dealer service before I made my choice. I went with the Kubota L3000DT. This is an 8 speed geared tractor. Engine HP is 30 and it is close to the 8N in weight. I looked at the JD 790 and the NH TC33 both nice machines but I went with the orange one. I really like my Kubota and the manual transmission is something I had to work with before.

I was able to keep the 8N, I plan on rebuilding it at some point. I taught my wife to drive the standard transmission, no problem there. This website was very helpful in the decision making process. Look at the comments other owners have made about the particular tractor you are loking at.

The hydraulic pump was a gear type pump. I suspect that failure was caused by a combination of things, overheated oil and a dead end for the pump oil flow. I have rebuilt a couple of gear pumps before this one that were worn out, but this one looked like something internal made it come to a hault.

The same mower has been used since then with no problems. The one thing different about that day was the operator was a young man who had never operated a tractor before.

I have used one of those store bought fence testers also. You stick one end in the ground hook the other end on the hot wire and the little light flashes. Generally I can not find it when I want to use it, or while attaching it to the fence I get "bit". I don't like that.

Roger uses the method that works best for me. Watch the intensity of the spark. I will take the gate hook and hold it close to something grounded and watch the spark, you don't have to have any special tools or meters.

I remember a friend of mine once put up a section of electric fence. He tried to save some money on insulators. He wrapped the wooden post with inner tube rubber secured it with a piece of copper wire making a loop to run the fence wire in. He took a regular Volt/Ohm Meter checked continuity between the wire and the post, everything looked fine until he turned on the fence module. The fence had very little charge to it.

The rubber did not provide enough insulation barrier. The ninie volt battery in the VOM did not produce the same potential as the electric fence unit. Once he used the proper insulators the fence worked fine.

After using the rake on both tractors I have found that the top link position seems to make a difference. The length and angle of the top link changes the angle the tines attack the ground. One way the tines are angled to dig in a little the other way they kind of drag along the ground.

Raking speed seems to be a factor. The 8N does not go as slow as the Kubota, so it tends to plow through bumps and stuff more than the Kubota when I am going slower.

The 8N does seem to have a weighter hitch making it stay down better.

$Related to the subject of safety. A close friend of mind had an accident doing something I and many others probably have done before without giving a second thought. While working in the woods clearing a section of his land he cut a smaller diameter trees, 8" or so, then used his Ford 1510 with a FEL to push the trees out of the way. This time coming in from the side he pushed against the upper portion of the tree. A branch caught on something causing the tree top to bend and roll. The branch he was pushing against slipped off the bucket and followed the loader arm aiming it right at his head. The blow from this hit broke several bones in his face and fractured his skull and knocked him out. He was working alone a little distance from his house, some how he made back to his home where his wife was. After several days in the hospital and many stiches he came home, but there was a posibility of brain damage. The story had a happy ending, he turned out to have only a few scars that show on his face. I can tell you one thing, the next time I went to push a tree with the FEL on my tractor I thought twice about what could happen.$ Log skidding attatchment
