I haven't used it yet in 2011, but will be sometime in June. I primarily use it to trim back bushes and small tree growth that encroaches over walking trails at a wetland preserve.

You definitely don't want to have the loader and blower connected simultaneously. John Deere does not offer an additional remote valve for this tractor. They do offer a set of 4 hoses that quick connect to the loader SCV and run to the rear of the tractor to provide rear hydraulic functions. You only need 2 for your blower, but the set has 4. The simple and cheap solution is for you to disconnect the 2 hoses controlling the loader bucket rotation and plug in the hoses to the rear controlling the chute rotation. You can still lift and lower the loader but not activate the dump function. Then when you are done snowblowing you hop off the tractor, disconnect the chute hoses, and replug in the 2 hoses for bucket rotation. You are then back in business with the full functions of the loader, and it didn't take more than 2 minutes to do.

The term "sub-compact" seems to have come into usage with the introduction of the Kubota 1800 and 2200. It is not in the SAE Handbook (at least not yet). These tractors and others now coming one the market like them do fit the SAE definition of Compact Utility Tractor in that they had Cat I (Not Cat 0) hitches and 540 RPM PTO as STANDARD equipment. These hitches use Cat I pin diameters, but the rest of the geometry (distance center to center of draft link ball joints, mast height, height of draft link balls in parked or working position, etc.) is typically smaller than larger compact utility tractors. Some people say they are closer to Cat 0 dimensions, but with Cat I pins and holes. Many Cat I implements don't quite fit the subcompacts without some (or a lot) of blacksmithing. As a consequence of the growing sub-compact market, several implement manufacturers including King Kutter, First Choice (Midwest), Woods, and John Deere are introducing small-sized implements for them. Usually the specifications listed with these very small implements state that they are sized for sub-compact tractors. About all we can say this means is that the pins and holes are standard Cat I and they will mount and work without modification on a Kubota 2200 tractor.

Although some early Japanese tractors that most people would regard as compacts were equipped with Category 0 hitches, almost all tractors using it are lawn and garden tractors and the hitch is an ACCESSORY--not a standard part of the base tractor. There are now many lawn and garden tractors advertised as having 20 to 25 hp. However, this is not PTO horsepower. It is usually the raw engine horsepower obtained in a SAE test that does not account for the power consumption of "engine accessories." PTO horsepower is usually about 85% of raw engine power and about 83% if the tractor is hydrostatic. PTO horsepower is the most meaningful number for comparing one tractor to another.

I don't see how using the auxiliary outlets would be convenient for the log splitter. Somehow you would have to run oil continuously to the splitter, but the auxiliary valve controls do not have a continuous flow position. If you just tied the valve in the open position there might be an overheating problem.

How about another approach. Power the existing pump on the splitter with the front attachment drive. You would remove the pump from the splitter and install a belt pulley on it. Then mount that on a small platform that attaches to the Quick Tach on the front. Run hydraulic hoses with quick couplers to the splitter. Then the tractor is just powering the log splitter pump as the former Briggs engine did. This keeps all of the splitter hydraulics self-contained and any high pressure "spikes" don't have the possibility of damaging the tractor hydraulics.

I have a 420 loader on a 955 and use the JD pallet forks a lot (price of the forks was about $900). Each rear wheel has 180 pounds of cast wheel weights and I have a carry box on the 3 point with additional weight totaling about 500 pounds. I have never tried to lift anything close to 800 pounds.

The Specifications in the 420 Operators Manual indicates that with pallet forks the maximum capacity measured at the pivot pin is 640 pounds. Since this point is well behind the center of gravity of the bale, the maximum bale weight that could safely be lifted to full height would be much less.

I suggest you reconsider what you are trying to do. Based on the JD specs this loader and tractor are not big enough to handle 800 pound bales. It appears from the specs that the 460 loader on a 4700 or 4800 would be better suited.

I have run both 60" and 72" decks on 420s with 20 hp Onans. As long as you are on relatively flat terrain, the tractor can handle the 72". I have very steep slopes and found that the 60" worked better when pulling my lawn vac trailer. Be sure to use at least 4 rear suitcase weights with the 72 inch deck. I also was running "high lift" blades on both decks. They take more power but produce a nicer cut.

I assumed from your first post that you had already ruled out the 4110 based on cost. It is substantially more tractor than the 4010 which is the "low price leader" unit. The 4110 is the updated 4100 whereas the 4010 is a reduced version. The 4110 has 3 more important horsepower (17), a higher capacity hydraulic pump, more 3 Point Hitch lift capacity, and larger tires. All of these add $ but it becomes a serious compact tractor and DEFINITELY worth the extra money in my opinion. It has the capability of handling a 60 inch deck in tough conditions much better than the 4010. Thus if you are going to compare the large lawn and garden tractor to a compact tractor the most reasonable comparison is to the 4110, not the 4010. Your most recent post also indicates you may potentially be interested in using a PTO wood chipper and PTO rotary cutter. The 4110 again would be the choice, but even here it may not satisfy you for wood chipping. It takes a lot of power to run chippers, and most I am familiar with recommend at least 20 PTO hp. You might get along with less but it will definitely mean smaller limbs and / or working more slowly.

(1) I mow 5 acres, not all of which is at my residence. Some of it is very steep with slopes of 30 degrees.
(2) Ventrac 4200 articulated 4WD-(31 hp). Dual wheels front and rear. Tractor and deck capable of safely mowing slopes up to 30 degrees.
(3) 72 inch deck front mount. Also have front mount 66 inch tall grass and weed deck.
(4) Very pleased. I have this type of tractor and decks in order to mow my slopes.
