I've been battling a number of small trees with large root systems. My best weapon so far is the sub-soiler. Mine came from TSC, but I don't see it online right now. They sell the KK model in the link below. A narrower unit like Wildman made would possibly cut the roots better, but since I don't weld yet, this was my best option. Maybe I can add a cutting edge to the front later. It tears the roots up down to 14" deep, buy go slow, it can make a great brake. If I hook one, I try to lift it a little. The extra downforce gives more traction and usually the root gives up. If you cut the stumps short enough, you can run over them and try to yank them out with the sub soiler after cutting the roots all the way around.<br>

This has worked much better than the FEL for me. I tried the same trick with the box blade, but it doesn't go down deep enough.<br>

Definitely check out the radiator and front grille for blockage. There have been discussions in the archive about Kubotas not coming up to operating temperature and I have to admit mine falls into that category as well (B7800).

In 85-90 degree heat, with 5' rotary cutter on 18" pasture grass & weeds the tractor stays at or below normal on the gauge.

Wouldn't you only loose the difference in weight between the grapel & the stock bucket? Not the full 600#.

I assume the stock bucket weight is in the loader manual or maybe on the Deere site.

What type of places carry the Fuel Filter Funnels. I found some online, but would like to have before the weekend if possible. Machine is just back from 50hr service and I don't want to contaminate the new filters.

I checked NAPA & Pep Boys online. No hits.

Is that a 1 head or 3 head sprayer. I think I have the same unit from Northern (25 gallon, 1.8 GPM pump) but it only came with the hand wand and I am looking to add spray head(s).

They have both single & 3 head options. Just currious what you like and don't about your rig.

I assume you rigged a remote power switch into the line?

I just saw you are from VA as well. Call him up. The 2910 is like my 7800 plus a few features I should have gotten based on what I know now.

I bought the "end of the lower link" style Easy Change extensions as well. Love them. That little bar works pretty well, but sometimes is in the way of the PTO.

I think a piece of 2x4 with hooks on the ends or unistrut would work just as well to hold the lower arms apart and could be farther from the impliment to avoid interference.

Yes, I still have to get off sometimes, but getting it all lined up is so much easier this way, and for many impliments you need to hook up the pto anyway.

I have more trouble getting my fat hands between the pto guard and the shaft to lock it in than with the 3pt now.

I was just catching up on the "controlling grass along fencing" post and saw comments about spraying CaCl. I didn't want to sidetrack that post, but this old one looked like a good place for this thought / question.

Spraying CaCl for snow melt / ice control sounds interesting. I assume you buy as solid, mix with water & apply. Is it very free from impurities, or how do you avoid clogging the sprayer nozzle?

Sounds like a neater, more accurate, less deadly (to grass & concrete) solution than many powdered melters or rock salt.

Or is this only for very large sprayers?

I have also have a brand new sidewalk with steps. I don't want to hurt the young concrete, but don't like breaking my ### after ice storms either. The genius that built the sidewalk followed the ground contour and only added a few steps where he had to so both the "flat" sections and steps both slope pretty heavily. They just replaced the damaged concrete, but went back just as before even after I asked about leveling it out some.

For the retrofit, It sounds like Grinders idea is teh best option so far. But wouldn't there be freezing in the trough that would still be a problem? If so, some heat tape made for gutters might solve it if a problem developes.<br>

The hot water approach sound like a great idea. I wonder if the heated pressure washers get hot enough? Northern didn't list the max temp, they are pricey and you would need a pressurized water supply to feed it.

If you go the trimmer route, I have a Sears walk behind. DON'T BUY THEIRS. Trimming up against something especially a fench is much easier with what "DR" calls Parallel Tracking. I think Troy Built has it too and maybe some others, but be sure. You need the cutter head off to one side to do a fenchline or building edge easily. The Sears unit I have can't do it. Other than that design issue, the walk behind cutters are extremely powerful. My wife trimmed around a toolbox I had sitting on the ground. When I picked it up, I only got the top 2/3. True story.

The other thing to watch is the material the "Mow Ball" is made of, either that or don't try cutting the grass in a gravel drive with it. She chewed the first ball to shreads.

I kind of do part of what you suggested (I think). I usually ring the pasture a few times then start carving out long thin rectangles to cut, and only cut the long sides. This makes the turns more gentle, but the cutter still tries to dig in. Now I think this is primarily related to 3pth leaking down.

I don't think I can easily "Lift the 3pth a little to turn then set it back into the stopper...". The B7800 doesn't have a position control on the 3pth. Thats one pretty good goof I think I made and why I'm telling anyone that asks to pay the difference for the 2910.

Wish I found this site before I ordered the tractor, not while I was waiting for it. One day I may attempt a modification or tractor swap.

My B7800 is in for its 50 hour service, but just before it went in I found two things that may explain a few of the unusual problems I have been having, but that concern me.<br>

While washing it down, I heard sounds coming from the brush hog frame, then noticed in about 15 minutes it had lowered itself from 3" height to resting on the ground. I started the engine and repeated the test with the same result.<br>

Earlier the same day, I accidentially crushed the tire of a walk behind trimmer I was carrying in the bucket. The bucket was level with the 4-in-1 jaw slightly open to keep the trimmer from falling out. Wheels straddling the jaw. I set the joystick lock to prevent accidentially bumping it. About 45 minutes later I went to unload the trimmer and found its tire firmly crushed in the bucket jaw. It appeared to have closed under pressure, not just from its own weight. <br>

The dealer found a scored valve in the 3 point control that they are replacing under warranty, but are still looking into the jaw closing issue.<br>

I store the tractor with 3 point down, loader down and loader pressures released.<br>

If you are thinking about moving dirt and smoothing it, a rear box blade will be a must.

You may want to see if either unit has a rear position control (A quick way to go back to the same height setting over and over again). If so, I'd go for the feature over the color. I have a little larger model, but think in hind sight that would have been a good feature to look for.

If its not too late, Add one more vote for the 2910 if the price differential is just $1500.

Unless this is mainly a field/lawn mower. Position control and the rear hydraulics are the main useful difference. I keep hearing how useful a hydraulic top link is for use with box blade and similar devices.

I think the rest would be nice, but could be lived without.

We will be going back with crusher run or something similar later. I just meant that I overshot the size of the base layer stones. The first season after clearing, the soil was very soft so I went with big rock and it swallowed a good bit of it. I've plowed off most of the loose top stuff, but a few trouble makers keep popping up. I thought getting them out before adding the mixed stone would be a good idea so they couldn't find their way back to the top.

I may just give up and bury my mistake, but I'm not quite ready to give up yet.

beagle - Do you have contact info for "Itegrated engineering"? I tried that spelling as well as "Integrated Engineering" and got buried, but couldn't find what appeared to the the right people. A co-worker has a bx2200 and has problems with many 3ph impliments. Maybe this would help him.

I wanted a 4-in-1 bucket to handle brush work. The local Kubota dealer ordered a Kubota Loader with a W R Long bucket.

I asked about a quick attach on the bucket, but he didn't like the idea. Said it added weight and extended the bucket forward. Anyway the entire loader is a semi quick attach.

Seems to work OK, any opinions on the combo?

That assumes you have a Cat 1 hitch. I don't know if they make a Cat 0 model.

I can only speak about the tiller for sure. The BX series tiller is chain drive, while the standard tiller is gear drive.

I think their idea is to make the BX series a little lighter and a little cheaper since they are being used with smaller tractors. But the price on both 48" tillers was the same last month when I bought mine.

On grader boxes & blades, weight is good as long as you don't exceed the mfg ratings.

I agree about the FEL bar, but have learned to work around it. Any fuel pumping rig would solve it, but I've gone really low tech for now. <br>

I buy fuel with 5 gallon cans, but transfer half to a 2.5 gallon for fueling. If I need all 5 gallons, now the tank is at half weight so no problem.<br>

As far as the overall machine, Personally I like the heel & toe HST pedal design better than the Deere side by side. The machine itself is very tough and as for the dollars last fall when I was pricing the choices were JD 4115 and B7800. <br>

The JD was $ 1400 more and 6 Hp weaker. It wouldn't have handled the 5' rotary cutter I wanted according to the JD dealer.<br>

In hindsight, the 2910 might have been a good idea for the rear hydraulics and position control, but I don't plan on that much grading to really NEED the position control. But it would be nice.
