Replace the battery before worrying about the starter. A battery left unused for two years is only a core. It will never take a charge and be of any use.

Screw on cap? That sounds like the externally threaded cylinder. If that's what you have, the rest should pull out.

Pulling the valve cover is a good idea, but before you do that, run the engine at a fast idle, maybe 1000 rpm or so. Then crack each injector line at the injector one at a time. Look for a/the cylinder which produces little or no change when the line is cracked. This may help narrow down the problem to one cylinder.

The throttle linkage is about all that's visible. Anything beyond that requires taking something apart. I"m sure the procedures can be explained to you, should you choose to "do it yourself." I've dealt with any number of such pumps, and may be of some help if you're interested.

Can't help wondering if you've looked at this from the standpoint that your clutch and/or adjustment thereof might be the issue here. I suspect it's a two stage unit, since most Chinese tractors are so equipped. If so, there should be a cover plate on one side or the other that can be removed for access to internal adjustments. I would start there before tearing into the gear train. Just personal opinion.

All good advise. Be aware that checking/cleaning the suction screen involves draining the hydraulic system. If you're going that far, you might consider replacing the load shaft seals. They are a common failure over time and will go from a slight seepage to a steady drip in a short time. Not expensive, and easy to replace, particularly while the housing is empty.

The steering pump, like the hydraulic pump, has two shaft seals, one facing into the pump, and one facing into the engine. When either(or both) of these seals fail, the pump can suck air from the engine crankcase causing the steering fluid to foam, and/or transfer steering fluid into the engine. No real reason for this to occur just because you removed then re installed the pump, but that's where your symptoms lead. Loose hose clamps or a misplaced O ring on the suction side of the pump might allow some air ingress and cause foaming, but shouldn't cause the transfer.

If it turns off with they key then it also turns ON with they key. No power to the pump, no fuel to the injectors. Look for a cylinder near the rear of the pump with a single wire attached with a spade terminal. Should be battery positive with key in both "on" and "start".

No mention yet of a suction screen. Look for a canister in the hydraulic pump suction tube. It will have a flange on the back side with two bolts. This screen should be checked/cleaned if you're having hydraulic issues.

Just the hand pump. It should be pumping fuel while cranking, not just when you work the manual lever. I wonder if the actuating lever on the back side may have broken, fallen off, maybe a pin worked out, who knows? Worth looking at.

If you suspect the starter, it's not hard to test. Remove the plastic cover that hides the cable connections. Locate and remove the start signal wire from the male spade terminal on the starter solenoid. Using a jumper wire of some sort, connect the spade to battery positive for a split second and see what the starter does. If it attempts to engage and crank the engine, it's probably not your current problem.

What book do you have?
I have a two volume reprint of the Deere manual. The electrical section has basic diagrams for both early and late serial number tractors as well as trouble shooting and some circuit diagrams for individual systems. If you care to elaborate on your concerns, maybe I can be of some help.

Just because your tractor doesn't have the mid PTO option, doesn't mean the harness won't have the necessary wiring/connectors for it. Should those wires somehow become damaged over time and the related circuits make/break for whatever reason, the indicator lights and related actions may well come and go. Check the area(s) where such switches and sensors would be if installed. Look for signs of damage to wires or harness connectors that aren't currently in use, but may have been stowed somewhere nearby.

Wow! That opens up a long list of possibilities.
Oil or fuel? MOST likely oil. Why is this happening? I doubt that anyone can answer that from out here. You're the only one here that knows how/what work was done, how the parts were inspected and fitted, checked for clearance where needed, and all that. Also the initial startup/breakin procedure, when this condition first appeared, what the engine has done since, and all that.
At this point, I hesitate to offer any suggestions since I don't know all the facts. Over the years in this business I've overhauled/rebuilt more engines than I care to count. Most where successful, but sometimes things don't go as planned for any number of reasons. Hopefully that's not the case here, and you can solve your issue with a good "run in" process and move on.
