I have to conclude that there's no cure for the lack of humor. In fact, I've been banned from one forum for stepping on the toes of one humorless moderator. :) We're working on the cure in the pharmaceutical industry, but, so far, to no avail.

The car I loved the most was my '87 Buick LeSabre. That was as close to owning a boat as I'll ever get to. I took it to 205K miles and sold it for $200 when it started fussing too much. The car I'd buy right now if I had the money would be '68 Eldorado. How come they don't make them like that anymore?

I listed 5 failures (not accusations, but real lack-of-leadership-type failures) in the last post on page 2. Your general comments did not address these points. You mentioned something about needing to have political consensus to be able to achieve things. Neither of the things listed by me were/are subject to political process as they could have been accomplished with a simple command.

A good full-bodied beer is a meal in itself.

Not to be outdone, our Canadian brothers brew this evil concoction called Unibrew. It tops out at 10 - 11% and only comes in a 1 Qt bottle so you gotta finish it if you open it. NOTHING light about this beer.

I didn't mean to be dismissive of women consumers; I misunderstood your original post. You're right about service translating into sales, although there are many aspects to service, including parts availability and product knowledge, neither of which can be found at HD.

Again, I base it on my (albeit limited) experience. I went to Home Depot to get a filter and a belt for the JD mower. HD staff told me that I'd have to go to a dealer; of course they didn't even know where the closest dealer was. I finally found the dealer only to be surprised at how much the spare parts cost. In comparison to the price of the mower itself, the parts seemed overpriced. That leaves a bad taste in your mouth; kinda like you've been had by the marketing geniuses at JD.

An inspector should be an optional safety feature for the homeowner, much like when you buy a house, you get an inspector to make sure you know what you're getting. It would be an easy task to scan the walls with a hand-held ultrasound device and see how good the frame is. Or go up in the attic and see how good the rafters are. The buyers need to take responsibility for what they are buying and when that happens, the builders will make sure they build quality homes or people won't buy them. Now, all they have to do is influence the specs legislature by buying off county and state officials, then claim that the house is sound according to the specs. BS! Let the private sector decide what is good enough and then the quality will go up.<br>

I bet when you built your house, you didn't need an inspector to tell you how well you want it built. You took the responsibility to ensure that it was over and above the minimum specs. It would be nice if the system didn't stifle others from taking responsibility; let people make their own mistakes and make their own decisions, they might just learn something and be less reliant on government. Oh, I forgot, we wouldn't want that...

Thanks Murf, a swale around the garage is a good idea, I can even direct it towards a vegetable garden perimeter watering swale.

The original patio was poured right at the level of the screen door and the siding so there's no place for it to go. When I do the new patio, I will have it installed ~ 6 inches below the screen door opening to keep the snow and rain water away from the wood.

Here is what I meant about the sand. Say I have top soil (or fill) next to the foundation all the way down to the footings. Now if I dig up some of the fill right next to the foundation all along the wall and fill the resulting ditch with sand, what's gonna happen with rain when it hits the ground. In the area where there's top soil, water penetration rate will be lower than in the area where there's sand. Water will run towards the area where it can penetrate the ground faster which is where my sand is. Here it will saturate the sand intil it hits the topsoil a few inches below the send-bed. Now, I have a lot of wet sand right next to my foundation wall. That's what I want to avoid.

But, like I said, two inches may be just enough to keep the bugs unhappy and not enough to be a problem as I described above.

I hadn't taken it to the mechanic yet - I need all my money for the house and I don't need the saw right away. That's what happens when you go into bioscience, most of the compensation comes in the form of intangibles, like the satisfaction of working on a worthwile project.

I am well enough aware of how difficult it is to put a new product on the market and your uncle was hardly in a position to compete with established autoparts makers.

My comment had more to do with your contemptious comment about "big business". Big business exists to make money, pure and simple. Don't expect them to exhibit higher morals or altruistic attitudes. They bought out your uncle's invention because it suited their interest. Your uncle, may he rest in peace, didn't have to sell his invention.

What would you prefer, that we have no big business? that all businesses be small? Who makes just about anything you or I have of any commercial value? Some local mom and pop outfit? Big businesses aren't "good" or "bad" - they are money making operations, and, by the way, they pay a lot of people, including myself, decent wages. Very much unlike Big Labor or Big Government.
