I'm currently doing plans for a home I'm soon to be building....<br>

I love skylights, but having never lived in snow country before, I'm wondering if they are a bad idea...<br>
<br>
Obviously, in the snow months, their usefullness would be greatly diminished, but are there problems associated with skylights and snow that wouldn't be a problemm in areas where rain is the only thing hitting the roof?<br>
<br>
If there are indeed problems, are they also problamatic with solor tubes as well?<br>

But 45k and jail time is sooo over the top......If the dog had attacked a kid, it would be a different story....but we're talking about a cat here...<br>

If once 'ordered' by the court to control the dog, the situation is not rectified....lose the dog.....hold the guy in contempt of court if he's openly defying the court....'reasonable' fines....whatever...<br>

Some reasonable compensation to the owner for her loss....but 45k? That's plain ridiculous!<br>

If only our criminal courts would hand out such harsh judgements! They won't force parents to take responsibilty for their kids (who can actually understand the rules), but they sure as hell will send a message to a dog who chases cats!<br>

Near my place up north, there is a guy who lets a couple of hounds run around loose.... They follow people and growl...They have followed me a couple times while I'm walking my dog....An old man up here was afraid of them (understandably) so he asked the sherrif what the legalities of shooting the dogs if they attacked him or threatened to would be, the sherrif told him, the guy has been warned, and if the dogs get too close, by all means....<br>

So he carries his revolver when going for walks.....I carry mine as well..it's a good idea anyways being as the area is loaded with bear and cougar......(and mexican nationals pot farmers)......<br>

This is a problem everywhere, but you can't just answer everything with lawsuits...<br>

I'm not positive, but if a dog is not kept under control and comes on your property even down here in the big city......if you feel threatened.......and you make it an ex-dog......I'm pretty sure you won't be facing any kind of charges..<br>

I'm not advocating that people shouldn't be held responsible for their pets, but $45k is one 'hell' of a lot of money!<br>

People can get in an accident while driving drunk and face a fine of a few grand and a suspended license....why should the penalty for your dog killing a neigbors cat be soo much harsher (by orders of magnitude)?<br>

Why can some bully continually harrass and pick on your kid and nothing at all will be done, but if your dog bullies your neighbors cat, you lose your house?<br>

What kind of armor was on that MV line?

I've installed conduit many times for medium or high voltage lines and in every case, they encased it in red concrete, so as to warn/protect future backhoe operators (or whoever) that might come in contact with it...That higher voltage stuff is extremely dangerous and will destroy anything or anyone who gets a hold of it...It doesn't just shock / kill you, it literally 'blows you up' !!!

Never heard of 10kv though (usually it was 4160, 16kv, 34.5kv, etc), so maybe they got something different going on where you're at..

As to which I'd go with...it would depend on the distance....in conduit, it's easier to replace, but direct burial can be 'repaired'....

At 1700 feet, repair would be much cheaper than replacement, I would think...Usually if there is a fault in UG cable, they will disconnect it, and hook up a signal generator to one end...then they can follow the cable from above ground using a detector (looks like a metal detector). HWere the signal stops, is your fault...You dig it up and then they make these special splicing kits, which include these molds which you fill with expoxy to create an unimpeachable container for the splice...

There are also test devices that allow you to hook up to one end, and they will tell you the distance from that end to the fault, but you have to know the exact path of the cable to make that info useful..

So for runs of a couple hundred feet or less, I would lean towards conduit, but anything longer, I would go the Direct Burial route....

Yeah, and it's not really a surprise considering they were training iraqi fighters in the use of anti aircraft weaponry and supplying them with night vision hardware right up to within 24 hours preceeding our invasion.

They're going to be a problem as is china. China flat out said that they fully expected to go to war with the US within 20 years. This was during Clintons second term. Yet that adminsitration gave them our ICBM technology anyways. China has since given it to iran.

Syria and Iran need to be blown off the face of the earth. I think israel is on the verge of doing Iran, as they will 'never' allow Iran to have nukes, especially now that they have a delivery system.

It appears Syria is now purposefully and openly trying to disrupt the Israel-palestinian peace process. If anyone gets tough with Syria, what do you want to wager that Saddams WMDs suddenly surface?

Syria and Iran live to destroy Israel. France and Russia want to destroy the US, and China wants to dominate the world.

We really need to send a message to the rest of the world by putting a buildup of our military strength on the fast track.

I saw an episode of COPS today where they were doing an undercover sting of male prositutes in west hollywood.

They had an undercover cop in a limo driving around soliciting gay male prositutes. They busted this one guy who had been out of jail for the same crime only one hour (he had been in for 6 months).

They showed part of his trial where a psychiatrist was testifying that the guy was HIV positive and knew it when he was out soliciting. He also testified that the guy had said he didn't care, he hopes everyone gets it.

They said at the end of the show that the guy was charged with felony prostitution and the case was thrown out of court by a federal judge on a technicality.

That is why I couldn't be a cop. I couldn't take doing the same work over and over because someone else kept undoing it.

This guy is out there right now knowingly infecting people with HIV, when everybody knows he's guilty of this crime, but because the cop didn't tie his shoelaces right that morning or something the case gets thrown out of court.

Man, convicting criminals who are caught red handed is almost as hard as getting building permits. Who could put up with that.

God bless you guys for doing that job, but half of the people out there I'd have to deal with as a cop would make me go ballistic. It takes a special person for that job.

I hardly know anything about the guy. I haven't read Rolling Stone Magazine in a long long time. But it sounds like he was a bitter guy in general.

That's a pretty harsh thing for his son to find. I always have a hard time understanding suicide. There's not a lot you can say about it......It's sad.

On one such patrol, our lead security vehicle stopped in the middle of the street. This is not normal and is very unsafe, so the following vehicles began to inquire over the radio. The lead vehicle reported a little girl sitting in the road and said she just would not budge. The command vehicle told the lead to simply go around her and to be kind as they did.<br>

The street was wide enough to allow this maneuver and so they waved to her as they drove around.<br>

As the vehicles went around her, I soon saw her sitting there and in her arms she was clutching a little bear that we had handed her a few patrols back. Feeling an immediate connection to the girl, I radioed that we were going to stop. The rest of the convoy paused and I got out the make sure she was OK. The little girl looked scared and concerned, but there was a warmth in her eyes toward me. As I knelt down to talk to her, she moved over and pointed to a mine in the road.<br>

Immediately a cordon was set as the Marine convoy<br>
assumed a defensive posture around the site. The mine was destroyed in place.<br>

It was the heart of an American that sent that toy. It was the heart of an American that gave that toy to that little girl.<br>

Sure, she was a little Iraqi girl and she had no knowledge of purple mountain's majesty or fruited plains. It was a heart of acceptance, of tolerance, of peace and grace, even through the inconveniences of conflict that saved that convoy from hitting that mine. Those attributes are what keep Americans' hearts beating. She may have no affiliation at all with the United States, but she knows what it is to be brave and if we can continue to support her and her new government, she will know what it is to be free. Isn't that what Americans are, the free and the brave?<br>

As usual, it's the lawyers, courts, unions, and agents who are encouraging and allowing things to get out of control. The league governing bodies for all these sports turn a blind eye as long as the money keeps rolling in.

I'm a bit of a football fanatic, and I really hate what's happening to the sport. The league is putting all these rules in place to 'protect the players', to the degree that it's taking all the fun out of the game for the spectator, and putting way too much power in the hands of refs to control the outcome of games on "judgement calls".

Combined with the fact that they are only hired part time, I see a recipe for disaster there for corruption and game fixing.

Athletes more and more are just looking out for themselves and rarely have a 'team player' attitude for more than a year or two out of college.

I blame free agnecy for this. Free agency has ruined every sport it has touched. There is no loyalty to the team or from the team, and so players and teams have a 'hell with them' attitude. As a result, everybody has become a commodity, represented by lawyers, unions, and agents.

Combine this with the fact that the media elevates them to god like status, exacerbates these problems even more.

Pro sports are definitely not going in the right direction.

I'm not one for visibly displaying a firearm unless it's neccessary (ie they've crossed onto my property and I feel threatened), but concealed with just a friendly 'what you up to' from a distance would be the ticket. The firearm is 'just in case'. I'm of the camp that you don't even 'show' a weapon until you're committed to using it if the situation goes there.

I would have dogs on my property, and Im a big believer that unless someone is specifically after you, dogs will discourage most all of those from the darker side of society. And it's sad, but even in rural america, tall fences have become a neccesity these days.

I've lived next to a psyco neighbor before, and I can attest that situation definitely 'sucks'. You really feel at a loss as to what to do.

For me, it's important to put things in perspective though. For as the scriptures say, "Do not fear man, who can only kill the body, but fear God, who can destroy the soul"

The moral of that story is, that like it or not we are vulnerable creatures, but you can't live in fear (of man). If you do, you wont have a life worth living

The sad thing is that they think that all these movies they make and all these tv shows the make represent the typical american life/family. In reverse that may eventually be true in that they affect our children and cause them to take on some of their bad behavior, but hollywood is really full of a lot of really sick, spoiled, rich people, who have no perspective at all.

They also seem to consider that whole 'red' section of the country as 'fly over' states. Full of people who are ignorant, stupid, and backwards. Not worth their time.

Pretty arrogant bunch, IMO.

FWIW, I've seen some machines that look very similar to the magnatrac being used for freeway work down here in So Cal.

Thye're being used on the steep slopes between the freeway and the homes up on hills to either side. I think they are used because they are small and narrow, making them ideal for working in these areas, where a full width road could not be created to get around on these slopes. They seem to require little more room widthwise than what would be required for ATVs and the like.

I've also seen some of those towable backhoes (2 wheels and pull themselves around with the bucket like those kits) being used for street utility work. I imagine for tight areas where a full sized backhoe can't be used.

The state of california itself is icredibly beautiful, the people by and large are hard working, honest people like everywhere else in this country. But unfortunately, we are held hostage by a very pain in the ass minority who happen to be a political majority. They only represent the special interest groups in the state, and scare everyone else into believing that all this BS they do is for our good.

When we vote in a piece of legislation they disagree with, they ignore it and go to the liberal judges to have it thrown out. The state is held hostage by a bunch of utopian fascists.

They keep getting back into office, because people like my dad (now deceased), would just check everything democrat without having a clue who these people are or what they stand for. Or what the party stands for in modern times for that matter. He considered himslef a good union man who did what his union told him to.

Californians often just vote democrat because they're democrats, and they don't know anything different.

Everyone I've ever known that has pre teen kids, gets sick constantly. Their kids bring everything home from school.

Generally thinking, I think the best defense is to not worry about it too much, Everyone I know who uses a lot of antibacterial soap, constanly washes their hands, etc. seem to always get sick. I believe you need a certain level of germ intake to keep the immune system strong.

Most of the people I've worked with in the construction industry over the years seem to be the last to get the latest flavor of flu going around. I chalk it up to eating with dirty hands, shaking dirty hands, grabbing dirty tools and materials, and so on. Those germs make your immune system strong.

The hardest thing on your immune system is constantly cahnging environments, (as well as stress and poor diet). For instance going in and out into the cold and wet from the warm and dry.

Generally, when I'm working hard outdoors a lot, and eating decent, I never get sick. It's during those periods when work is slow, or when I spend lots of time indoors or eat poorly, that I find myself catching the flu.

The shot seems to make no difference either way.

One thing I do notice, is that once my body is in recovery mode (during that period where colds and flus tend to just hang on for a while), that getting out to work and sweating it out, seems to speed the recovery up a lot. I find that going ahead and taking the one to three days off in the beginning when the things gotta run its course, and then jumping right back into some hard physical work (while eating well and taking vitamins), seems to result in the shortest periods of sickness.

I try to avoid taking flu medicine after the first couple days as that seems to prolong things for some reason if I continue to take it.

These are just my own observations over the years from personal experience and talking to others. Everyone I know that works with their hands for living seems to agree with this mentality.

It seems like hard work and good eating is the answer to everything. Keeps you healthy to start with so you avoid getting sick in the first place, and if you do, it goes away fast.
