I haven't been on here for quite some time...never enough time in the day, add to it four kids and heart surgery...etc, etc.
Anyway, did you ever get a chain saw holder for your Foreman? I never did (see above...four kids, etc!). If so, what one did you get, how is the Foreman, and, is anyone spouting off on tractorpoint these days?

OK, gang, my 79 year old father in law had his Sears lawn tractor stolen. I told him he ought to consider taking his $1000 insurance money, and buy a used, higher quality, even if it is 30 years old, lawn and garden tractor. He only mows a 1/2 acre tops with it. Knowing this, what model(s) should I be looking for? Someone near me has a 1971 JD 140, but they want $1600 for it...sounds high to me. Suggestions?

I own one of these tractors, and what Frank said about cold oil is true. Had the tractor not been run for a while? I changed out all fluids and filters at 300 hours, and I now have 335 hours on it. When I ran the tractor last week in 15 degree weather, you could tell for the first 10-15 minutes that the hydro fluid was cold, and the tractor made some strange noises. Find out when the last hydro fluid and filter change was done. My guess is that a person that would sell one of these tractors with so few hours on it probably didn't change the fluids...

How long would they last if I have to cross a paved road, or occassionally, drive a 1/4 mile or so on a paved road? I know I have some ice, but my problem is with hard packed snow...I keep the tractor in a barn on the other side of a 30 degree sloped hill from my house...and when it is time to split wood or scrape the driveway in the winter, it is a royal pain to get the tractor over to my house where it is needed. I mow my parent's lawn with the tractor, and so I am reluctant to switch to R1's.

My 2 cents worth: If you are going to use a loader with this size machine, buy the hydro. I have a TC45D (with hydro), and my friend has the TC45 (gear). He has the loader, and I can't tell you how many times he said he wishes he had the hydro...so much easier to keep your hand on the loader joystick, and operate the hydro with your feet...

I bought my TC45D used with 100 hours on it. I paid about the same as a brand new tractor, EXCEPT that I got a 6' finish mower, 3PH log splitter, hydraulic dump wagon, rear blade, and a landscape rake included in the deal.
200 hours is nothing on one of these machines if they are taken care of. Save the $$ for attachments. I'll take the loader if you don't want it! :)

I have a TC45D. There are times in our barn where SS would be appreciated; but I think I have read that you will have reduced FEL capacity with the SS? I can also tell you that a friend has a TC45 (gear), and everytime we get together, he wishes he had the Hydro. After having the hydro for a couple hundred hours now, I don't think I would want to go back to gear, at least not for my use. Time will tell however if it will last as long as the gear tranny, and the overall cost of ownership?

Here is a link for John Deere's aeration products. My local rental center said that he had a Bluebird 742 aerator, but didn't have much call for it except for a local landscaper, so he ended up selling the unit to him.
The second link is for the Bluebird. Since these units are pretty much once a year machines, I think it makes sense to rent rather than buy.

OK, has anyone priced out a brake job on a F-150 or an Expedition lately? Does it seem that you can't replace brake pads without having to replace rotors as well anymore? Does anyone have any ideas why rotors are failing so much more often than 10-20 years ago? Is this happening on Chevy and Dodge 1/2 ton pu's as much as Ford's? Has anyone else seen the amount of brake dust on other makes that Ford has on their wheels?<br>
And, finally, is anyone else as mad as I am at FOMOCO right now, and I used to work for FOMOCO??

I think evergreens will help if planted densely enough. Can also help with developing a wind break, which helps carry alot of noise. Anything that can interrupt wind will interrupt sound waves.

Get a dog. Seriously, when we had a our dog, even though she was a house dog, we never had problems with deer in the garden. Now that the dog has been gone, deer are all over the yard. Good Luck!

Here in SW PA, we haven't had an inch of snow ALL YEAR, TOTAL! It's 60 degrees today. Most people are happy...me, I'd rather see some white stuff, at least a couple times this winter to let the kids (and me!) play in it. How about sharing some of the snow from out west, guys??!!

K, I couldn't agree with you more, I owned a VW TDI that was quiet, efficient, and if you consider the CO put out getting 45-50 MPG, I would even call it "Green". But you will notice, that even though VW never had to offer incentives on their TDI's, they can't import them this year with the change to the new fuel. I will be surprised if Ford or GM offer a diesel in a compact, or even a 1/2 ton pickup within the next year or two. I'm certain they would sell, and I would be one of the first buyers!

Followup: I elected to do nothing with the tank system until spring (I don't have the extra $$ right now, and the well has been keeping up if we conserve). But, my pressure tank is coming on too often...It is supposed to turn my well pump on when it comes down to 40PSI, and shut off at 60PSI. When it turns the pump on , it goes slowly up to about 50PSI, and then the meter jumps up to 60PSI, leading me to believe that I may have air in the system??? Any suggestions???

AC5ZO gave me some excellent advice in the past on water softening. Per his advice, I installed my own GE high efficiency water softener, and the last time I checked my hardness, I believe it was about "19" (not sure what the scale means). I add a couple hundred pounds of salt maybe every 6 months or so, and I have 4 children...so you can imagine how much water we go through. I've been very happy with this softener so far. I'm not sure how much water it uses for regeneration, and with the well problems I've had lately, I guess I need to look into this as well.

I'm with David...don't know anything about wireless, except I'm ready to move into the 21st century. I have dial up at home, but the kids are starting to get old enough for limited internet access, and the dial up sucks. I know Verizon does not offer wireless in my area yet. Only my local po dunk phone company offers DSL, and I guess the other option is satellite. What recommendations does anyone have if I would use probably less than 75-100 hours per month, mostly for surfing, very little business use. My desktops are getting old, so it will be time to upgrade soon. I have phone jacks in each room, but did not run the more expensive CAT wiring when we built 5 years ago.

The link below is my neighbor's business; he didn't like some of the fence post drivers out there, so he now designs, builds, and sells his own. He may be able to offer advice on your application. He may even be able to build one for your specs?
