I built a 708 a few years ago. I used it quite a bit the first couple of years I had it, last year I think I had it out twice to remove stumps.
Mine doesn't have hydraulic stabilizers, which would be nice; also I wish I had a narrower bucket for digging trenches for water/electrical lines.
Can't help you on resale value.
I've had good luck with mine within its limits. It isn't the same as a dedicated tractor-loader-backhoe; it is a very good alternative to a shovel and pick.

I've attached a link to the web page that documented my build; I haven't looked at the page for a long time, don't know if it all still works.

Anybody own or know anything about Tikka rifles? I have a buddy that is looking for a lightweight, mountain-rifle style rifle and he says the Tikkas look good and are much cheaper than his first choice, Browning.<br>

The question has already been answered, but I'll add my opinion: R1's are bad in snow, but R4's are worse.

My TC29 is adequate in 4wd with chains on the back (with R4's). Even better would be chains on all four wheels.

Once my Mom and Dad had a barn cat they felt obligated to feed up at the farm. They drove up there after a big snow (in a 2wd truck). Dad thought he would make the walking easier by breaking a trail with the Ford 801 (Ag tires, no ballast at all). Not plowing, mind you, just driving over to the barn and back to make a path with the tire tracks. Well, he about got the Ford stuck up getting it out of the garage. He said it took him a while just to get it back in the barn.

A farm tractor without chains and/or ballast is worthless in winter.

My active tractors right now include a Farmall Super C, Massey 135, and the NH TC29, as well as my Farmall A.

The 135 gets used mostly for bush hogging at the farm.

The Super C does my spring plowing, some pushing of rocks and brush with a box blade, and some bush hogging.

The TC29 gets the most hours; it does all of my finish mowing and tilling, 90% of my firewood hauling, and occasional use with the 3ph backhoe, box blade and dirt scoop.

The FAA is relegated to pulling a trailer, since it doesn't have hydraulics or a lift.

Any of them may be used to pull logs off the log pile. Usually the Super C because it is outside and easiest to get to.

My Super C is the favorite. Not as user-friendly as the little NH, but there is something special about it.

If I didn't use my TC29 for lawn mowing, I would definitely put ags on it. The R4's are an OK compromise, the ags are better for gardening and farm work; they just tear up the lawn too much.

I've often wondered if you scared a deer enough if it would avoid the area.

A paintball gun is what I'm thinking of. The deer up at the farm are tame enough I could easily get in range and pepper them with paintballs. Plus it would be a way to relieve the anger of having them destroy my pumpkin patch, without killing them.

My local whitetail expert tells me that a deer will avoid an area if it thinks something is trying to kill it there. So I'm thinking of building a motion-activated, spring-loaded, stuffed mountain lion. :)

There is more than one neighbor with loud bikes, and it has been going on for more than a year. This week was the first time I've heard the very loud ATV...the "nice" neighbors tell me it goes on all the time. I guess up until now I've just been at the farm at times when he wasn't running it, or I was busy on our MF diesel with my hearing protection on.

I'm trying to avoid the temptation to annoy them with noise in the hope that they will see the connection. For one thing I don't believe that two wrongs make a right; also I've watched my poor Dad struggle his whole life to deal with situations like this; he is even less tolerant than I am of loud, rude behavior; and it never worked for him. That is really the larger point for me: I see that other people may be bothered a bit by the excess noise, but don't obsess about it or let it ruin their day. I'm trying to adapt to an imperfect situation.

On the other hand, there are a bunch of trees that need cut on my property about 60' from their front porch, and I prefer working early in the morning...

Mine has worked well. I waited until they went on sale late last winter and got one for $1100 at TSC.

According to the web page, they are gear drive.

The owners manual is available online at the link listed. Bandwidth warning: The file is 1.8 MB. It has exploded parts diagrams in the back.

Thanks for the follow-up.

I always fill my filters as full as I can depending on how they are mounted. It helps cut down on that ugly 2 seconds of valve/lifter clatter on the first start-up after an engine oil change.

Dad had a similar situation about 20 years ago (he would have been about 55). For years he nursed an "ulcer" that the family doc had diagnosed. Certain foods that Dad loved would set it off. Over about 15 years, it gradually got worse and worse, until he could only eat boiled eggs and mashed potatoes. He got down to about 140 pounds (he's not a big guy). Finally he went to another doctor, who immediately diagnosed gull bladder problems. This was before the new surgical methods were developed, the surgery to remove the gall bladder had him laid up for 6 weeks. But it fixed him up.<br>

Lately, about the same thing happened to him because of a hernia he had been hiding from the family, but that is another story.<br>

Bought a King Kutter 5' tiller at TSC on sale last spring for $1000. No problems. I've had good luck with my KK finish mower, too. It now has about 500 hours on it with no problems.

I figure for my use (just a few hours a year) my tiller will last forever.

Yes, well, that is why I contacted Cat Pumps directly, and they gave me the go-ahead.

That is also why I made up a water tank using a plastic 55-gallon barrel and 1-1/2 inch suction line. I JB Welded a 1-1/2 inch fitting on to the drum, got the required fittings to reduce it to garden hose size for the pump inlet, and tried it out today. Works like a charm. Set the barrel up in the back of the truck with the pressure washer on the ground so I had about 3-1/2 or 4 feet of head. I didn't need high pressure for this job, just about like a car wash, so I turned the regulator down toward the lower end of adjustment. No pump cavitation that I could tell. Only used about 2/3 of my water supply in the 20 minutes or so I worked on the tractor.

Your results may vary.

Update: After changing the fuel filter and following the factory recommended 3-step bleeding procedure, the tractor started and ran for about 1-1/2 hours. Then it quit again and did the same thing...it will start immediately and run for about 10 seconds.

The owner is convinced it is heat related. I'm leaning toward contaminated fuel, or the fuel shut off solenoid. He is out of town this weekend, maybe we'll find out more this coming week.

DC is sticking with their story (at least to consumers) that the Challenger will be available with a manual transmission. Reply from Doctor Z about the production Challenger:

We can still hope this is true. But so much for a late-2007 release.

My TC29 wouldn't crank when a small relay went out in the fuse panel. We checked it by swapping in one of the other relays. This wes when I picked my tractor up from the dealer in 2000; hasn't happened since.

Mine is a standard shift so not sure about your model, but did you try putting the range shift lever in the other neutral position?

I would check the relays and fuses first, then start jumping over the safety switches.
