The FMM idea appeals to me; the same thing applies to my NH tractor with the 3ph finish mower. I can reach things with it (going backwards in this case) I couldn't with a mid-mount. Not the reason I bought it, but it is an advantage for the type of mowing I do.

I agree that a used commercial unit would outlast me. We have found that to be true for every farm tractor we've ever had; these Appalachian hills just don't have enough acreage to wear one very much. The NH is the only new tractor I've had (or plan to have).

Are the ZTR mowers really as light in the front end as I've heard? One thing that turned me off of them originally was that they wouldn't climb a very steep bank; and couldn't tow even a small trailer.

The last rumor I read was about engine/transmission options and pricing.

The DC rep was quoted as saying that two engines would be available, similar to the 2006 Charger. 5.7 Hemi and 6.1 SRT Hemi. I assume the 5.7 would be the same or similar to the 350 HP engine in the Charger R/T. Transmission choice is going to be either the 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic. I read that to mean one or the other, not both available.

On price, the rep was quoted as saying right in line with the current Charger. Which means low $30,000 range for the 5.7; low-to-mid $40,000 for the SRT 6.1.

This effectively rules out the bigger engine for me. Although I wouldn't rule out the 5.7 version.

Hopefully DC will firm this up a bit in the weeks to come.

I believe that knowing the right thing isn't hard; but doing the right thing can be.

Talking to friends (even internet friends) is a good way to cope.

We just had our first baby this year. I hope I'm never in a spot that I have to struggle with either taking care of him or taking care of my wife. The bond with a child is strong, but then, a good woman is hard to find, too. So I do my best for both, that is all I have.

Sometimes you have to realize that a perfect solution doesn't exist; you have to make do with the solution that is obtainable. Trust in yourself to make good decisions. (And don't forget to take care of yourself).

Doesn't sound too bad to me. If they're giving you the loader and mower for $4000, that means $12700 for the tractor...That's about what I paid for my TC29 with standard transmission in 2000.

If that is their first offer, they could probably do better.

I've had a Husky 136 for about 4 years. I bought it as a limb & trim saw; but my other saw is so heavy, and the Husky works so good, that I use it for most of my firewood cutting. No problems other than a bent bar, and that wasn't the saw's fault.

I don't have anything against the 9N/2N/8N tractors but there are better choices for the same, or less, money. The 801 series can be found with power steering and live PTO, and have more HP. The price you quoted for a restored 8N is high, in my opinion. Unless you're a real collector I think you could find one for quite a bit less that would be just as functional.

For around $4000 you could easily find a Massey Ferguson diesel like the 135 that is 35 HP, independent PTO and hydraulics, and power steering.

The negative side of that is you'll have to put up with or repair the occasional leaking seals, a little oil consumption, and worse overall appearance.

Like Earthwrks says, the old tractors are adequate for what you're looking for, but using a new one would ruin you pretty quick. Although I do enjoy using my old Farmalls.

Unfortunately, around here the "very rural" areas are the worst for meth-heads. The small towns aren't too bad about getting stuff stolen; it's the outlying areas that are in danger. Fortunately, we hardly ever have any of the organized crime rings that (rumor has it) use rollbacks and winch equipment up on them.

Also it is usually four-wheelers that get stolen instead of tractors. Occasionally, we hear of a tractor that is run into a pond or some such nonsense, but seldom stolen outright.

The best you can do is slow them down. We usually take a battery cable off, turn off the fuel, and if it is going to be a while before it will be used, take off a front wheel and take it with us. If it is a gasoline engine, take the coil wire or take off the distributor cap and take the rotor with you. Other than that I like the chain through the wheel idea.

And get it insured.

We had an organized tractor ride just about a month ago. Only about 12-15 showed up, but the organizers are planning to promote it better next year. I took my Farmall A, but turned around early and did about 15 miles of the planned 20-some mile trip (The A is slow and rides stiff-next year taking the Super C). This was on single-lane county roads with little traffic, and we pulled over occasionally to let cars by.

There are a few informal tractor "shows" during the year, no prizes or judging, just guys bring their old tractors and sit around in the parking lot of local businesses. Usually have a pretty good turnout.

Boy, I can see we have divided opinions about this. Probably a reflection of our own experiences. I've got rocks all over my yard that are 2, 3, 4 inches high. I mow it with a 3ph finish mower, and have for 5 years now. Over the years they are getting reduced slowly from breaking them with a sledgehammer, or digging them up with a backhoe, whatever. I would see absolutely no problem with mowing over 4" high rocks with a bush hog. In fact, that is what they are used for around here. Yep, they get beat up. Why, in 10 years or so you'll probably have to do some major repairs. Just set it higher, and go slow. I sure don't have the time, money or inclination to go out and in a few days get rid of every rock on the place.

If you are looking for the smooth, level, golf-course type lawn, you'll have a lot of work to do; no avoiding it. If you just want to knock the weeds down on a field, bush hog it.

Good grief. I have almost 700 hours on my TC and the 3ph arms don't show any wear. But then at least 1/2 those hours are pulling a 3ph finish mower, which wouldn't be very hard on the hitch. I'll keep a watch on it.

It's not supposed to do that. The clutch should slip, causing a horrible noise that makes you think you're really messing something up.

I think they get stuck sometimes; it seems that my KK tiller manual mentions it. Anyway, adjustment is pretty straightforward spring preload.

Yes. An occasional night out won't hurt it, but sitting out in the sun and rain continually, and it will fade, peel, crack and rust. Water seeps into threads and seizes bolts in place. At least a tarp is called for.

I'd agree that bigger doesn't ALWAYS mean quicker. But in my experience it sometimes does.

I rough mow usually with an old MF135 diesel (35 hp). It will run rings around my TC29 with a 5' brush hog. So would the 801 series Ford tractor that we used up until last year. Now if you're just cutting thin grass, or it isn't too high, the TC does fine. Let it get thick and about knee high, and you're low gear, middle range or high gear, low range.

Last year I mowed side by side with a TC40 and MF135. All of us had 5' brush hogs. I was the only one that had to gear down to go through the tough places. The other guys pulled right through. (The MF labored the least, by the way).

For tilling, I've only been using the TC two years. But several times I've had to go to low-low to keep from lugging the engine. I know that tilling speed is not limited solely by engine power, but sometimes it is. In my soil, where I garden, more power would help.

For me the smaller tractor is better for several reasons. It fits on my trailer, in my barn, and is small enough to finish mow with. But if I didn't have to trailer it, and didn't finish mow with it, I'd want something bigger.

I'm not great at plowing. But you need to set the top link so the heels of the plow stay in the furrow. This lets the heel (back of the plow) keep the plow from moving side-to-side. If the top link is too short the back of the plow will not be touching the ground.

You must set a depth limit or it will dive deep and stop the tractor. You don't want to plow too deep; 4-6" is more than enough. Around here, any deeper and you get into clay; also you are just turning over dormant seeds that will sprout.

It takes a lot of practice, especially with a two bottom plow.
