Keep your tail gate up for best mileage. Surprisingly, wind tunnel tests and computer analysis have shown the tail gate up gives the least wind resistance due to a "bubble" of air in the bed causing air to ride over the bed. Tail gate down loses that "bubble". And a net tailgate is the worst of all. Check out this link.

My JD 950 has the JD 75 FEL on it. I think that was the factory model for the 850 also. The local Kubota dealer handles Bush Hog equipment and they make FELs. I am sure there are others also. Try calling you local dealers and see who handles what and if they have one for the 850.

I have a 6' cutter that I have always used an angle grinder to sharpen the blades. Sharpen them at least once and sometimes twice a year. I don't take the blades off. I just stand the cutter up on its side, lean it back against my FEL, secure it with a chain, and have at it. Much easier and cleaner than trying to reach under. And it allows me to clean grass, twine, wire, etc. wrapped around the blade bolts. And I always lube around the blade bolts to keep the blades free swinging. I don't remove much metal and I try to maintain the original angle of the blade. If I get the edge too sharp, I just use a file to flatten the edge a littel. No more vibration now than when new.

You can do a google search for the words power line health and get an endless number of sites for information. Out of curiosity I looked at several. All stated how the health question had been overblown. There are apparently no legitimate studies that have shown a direct link to power lines and health problems.
My only concern would be the land value. Both the visual aspects and the perceived health aspects would greatly diminish the future sale value. If you plan on living there for a very long time and don't mind looking at the wires, then go for it. If you plan on a relative short stay, I would not do it.

Turn on your head lights. If they are bright, then the battery is probably OK, but could be a little weak. If dim, then either a really weak battery or a bad connection. If the lights are bright, leave the lights on and try to start the tractor. If the lights dim, you probably got a bad battery cable connection or weak battery. Clean all connections and try again. If no change, then have the battery checked. If the lights don't dim and the starter does not try to turn over, then there is no current going to the starter. Either a bad connection in your starting circuit or one of your safety interlocks is not made.

I bought a tilt meter made for tractors. The guage shows green from 0 to 15 degrees, yellow 15 to 20, and red above 20. Those are, of course, just relative numbers. But those numbers pretty much correspond to my pucker factor numbers. I try never to go above 20 and only creep along when I do.

When you have layovers, the best advice given is pick a major airline with a lot of flight options. If your airline only has a couple flights a day and you miss yours for any reason, you may be stuck for a day or more. If the airline has flights every couple hours, then you have a lot of options. I take 30-40 flights a year and have only overnighted in a layover city once and that was due to a late evening flight and a heavy snowstorm.

Do you guys owning SD diesel pickups do your own oil changes or have it done? There was a time when I did all my oil changes on my gas trucks. I am approaching my first on my diesel and debating whether take it the dealer, an oil change place, or do it myself (last choice). What can you expect to pay at the dealer?

Murf - I think I misread your post at first. You mean all the PSDs that you own, not ALL PSDs. Right? I could see a potential liability issue if you did not make your employees aware of it. Suppose they were on the highway and attempted to pass, then hit the limit about halfway around what they were passing, and then could not get by before they reached oncoming traffic, resulting in an accident. With today's litigation environment, you could be at risk.

I bought a 1984 JD950 (next size up), 4 wheel drive, JD 75 loader, PS, 2000 hours, about 4 years ago. Good condition. I paid $8500 for it.
