Happened to see this in Popular mechanics vol 186, no 2 - Feb 2009, page 92. Looks like the synthetic only after x hours of "running in" is a urban legend for modern vehicles (copied verbatim):<br>

I bought a 2009 Ford Escape hybrid in September. It just turned 1000 miles on the odometer. I would like to change over to synthetic oil. At what mileage would you recommend I make the change?<br>

Read the owner's manual. Your Escape is already factory-filled with a synthetic; to wit: Motorcraft SAE 5W-20 Premium Synthetic Blend. So you can change anytime, although Ford's service manual says you can use a mineral oil if you choose. Many vehicles on the market today are filled at the factory with synthetics. I've never subscribed to the theory that you should use mineral oil for 10,000 to 20,000 miles to get the engine broken in before changing over.<br>

To determine if you have a version of the 4400 with the updated front axle you will need the serial number and a quick call to deere or a dealer.

IMHO the 4400 is the better deal. the 4410 is the electronic version and has a lot more that can go wrong. The only advantage is the electronic adjustment on the HST drive that permits the tractor to continue to move forward (or backward) slightly while braking sharply once you take your foot off the forward or reverse pedal. I have the 4300 and if you take your foot off the drive pedal the wheels lock up almost instantly, the e-version (the 4310 or in this case the 4410) has an electronic gradual release so you cant do that - its kinda nice while driving.

If you have a hoe on the tractor forget easily mounting a MMM its a total pain to remove the subframe for the hoe and vice versa to get a MMM on it.

This is one of those cases where a picture would be worth a thousand words. If you can take it to an industrial electric repair shop or motor winder they will be able to repair it for you if it it worth repairing.

It seems logical to me that pollution (including production of greenhouse gasses) is probably not good for our planet. In that case I ask myself what kind of planet do I want to give to my children.

For me its that simple. Will our children look at our deeds and say they tried their best or will they say they didn't care. Will they pay dearly for our economic incentive to do nothing?

I don't know but I suspect that pollution is generally not good and while I may not feel the effects now my children may suffer as a result.

If recent history is any guide our current actions are causing harm. Think about PCB's, and how many of you eat fish you catch in rivers, levels of asthma in kids and all manner of current known pollutants that were considered "safe" at some time in our past.

How well it is built will not overcome an inherently faulty design.

The perfect design relies completely on the construction being performed to the specs that were inherent to the design.

The two concepts go hand in hand. In the first instance I suppose you could use the carburetor as an example when employed in mass production vehicles. The absolute best built carburetor is easily surpassed in reliability by a simple (perhaps even averagely built) fuel injection system, today you don't see any carburetors in vehicle production, the design is just not durable enough. On the other hand optical lenses used in most scientific instruments are relatively easy to design but require extremely tight manufacturing tolerances to work properly and the care and expertise required in manufacture is the primary reason for their high cost.

Something's wrong if your switches are failing after only three or so years in a protected environment. Also what are you referring to: Switches - as in breakers or terminals as in terminations (bolted crimped or otherwise). Be careful as many crimped terminations are not permitted if our installation has to pass code. Electrical supply wires are usually screwed down or bolted and whatever device you use has to be UL listed as such. Gobs of dielectric grease may not be your answer either. Your post indicates some other problems (water entry being the most common problem).

To all that have requested the JD electrical part of the tech manual (it's for the 42, 43 and 4400 models only), I have sent it to the email address listed throughout the year (with some delays if I had not been on the forum for a while). I have not noticed any replies stating that the email and attachment bounced so I assume you all got it. Admittedly I have not had confirmation anyone received it either.<br>

Present charging circuitry for most if not all "smart" battery chargers is considerably more complex than this. They include algorithms that control current flow and voltage applied based on the battery type, rate of internal discharge, charge resistance, differential charge resistance, temperature of the environment and a slew of other factors. If you don't believe me open up your smart charger and take a look at the circuitry - there is much more than a rectifier and a relay in there. Simple chargers from yesteryear wreck modern batteries built to deliver greater performance at more exacting standards. These batteries require more sophisticated charging technology.

While simple cheap chargers have circuitry that tends to looks more like the suggested situation a decent smart charger with appropriate features for this type of operation (battery charge maintenance) should not damage an otherwise working battery.

My smart charger has often indicated battery problems are imminent long before the battery fails.

In short use the right tool for the job - Murf's set-up works for him - that's great, I would feel 100% confident using my smart charger to do the same thing. If yours has a battery charge maintenance function and you read the manual on how to use it you should be just fine, your battery may thank you for it.

You are in the minority here - the more I can squeeze out of my gallon of gas in my little corolla the better - the rest of the US buying public seems to agree.

Not so - the foreign auto makers are making cars (in the US) under the same rules as the US ones are - they seem to be able to make cars the US customer wants.

This calamity is self inflicted and has little to do with the govt. US auto manufacturers had to make cars with big profit margins (SUV's and Light duty trucks) to stay in business as their total costs per delivered car are higher. This is due in large part to the fact that their legacy and current total employee costs (not just cost per hour) are about twice what the foreign (but made in the US) manufacturers are. When their sputtering business plan ran up against high gas prices and a faltering economy no one wanted to buy a SUV or truck. People started buying smaller economy vehicles. These smaller vehicles provide nowhere near the profit as does a SUV and so the manufacturer (already in a precarious financial position) tanks because they cant make the high margins they need to support their cost structure.

They need to file for bankruptcy - one will probably go insolvent) - and reorganize. Union jobs will have total pay packages about half of what they are now and the co's will be able to focus on selling cars people will actually buy.

The two were grade 5 (I think) bolts used to attach a post hole auger to the post hole gear drive. At the time they were used the auger struck the underside of a concrete slab and ended up damaging the PTO clutch inside the tractor when a single grade 2 bolt would have sufficed for the job and would have sheared right off protecting the clutch. Its unfortunate the two bolts held as long as they did.

The glow plug indicator on a Ford 1500 (1982) with a Shibaura engine was a small piece of coiled heating element housed in a metal cylinder just below the dash - You could feel the heat and see the coil glow when it heated red hot. Was it in series or parallel or relayed with the actual glow plugs - I don't know but it sure could have been in series. If your glow plugs are operational and the indicator is not then you have a parallel set-up, as an open circuit in series kills the whole shebang.

Cando - I couldn't agree with you more - we have ourselves to blame. Everyone is so focused on bashing the other party and in the end it makes no difference - it's a circus. IMHO Ag tires for a lawn is a no-no. You will keep being disappointed at how they rip up the sod especially if it is wet/soft. This will be aggravated with a MFWD set-up.

Aluminum and copper are still routinely used together, the device just has to be UL listed for Al/Cu usage. For example buss bars in panels and contacts for breakers are almost all aluminum. Breakers still accept copper wires (in Residential wiring this usually = romex) at the screw in contact point where you have an aluminum screw / receptacle and a copper wire. The antioxidant compound is most needed at the point where the service cable neutral enters the panel and is attached via screw lugs to the neutral bus. Often water enters the cable (SEU type) outside and travels down the cable beneath the first insulation layer (plastic compound) along the outermost aluminum sheathing (neutral). This water then comes in direct contact with the aluminum bus bar in the panel before it has opportunity to evaporate.

Folk always focus on the markup and fail to realize that there is a building, staff, phone costs, utilities etc to be paid for. I don't see many Dealerships making obscene amounts of money.<br>

I also suspect that EW has his "money making" jobs where he makes a markup of 500 to 1000 percent over what the job actually costs him and that those jobs subsidize the costs of others where he buys a lot of Home Depot pipe and cant charge more than 110% of what his customer could get it at from HD at, even though he had to source, order and deliver the pipe.
