I can't comment on the JD 4100 as I have never seen one, but have owned a Kubota B2719 HST for 8 days and I love it. I have only used it 15 hours so far and all I have done so far is brush mow 14 of my 24 acres. A terrible mess, with thick weeds and grass 6 feet tall, hills and draws, along with a honey locust tree every ten feet, some in clumps. I have a 5 foot Rhino rotary mower and the combination goes through this mess with ease. The tach stays right on the 2600 RPMS it takes to maintain 540 PTO RPMs - NO lugging at all experienced. This property had not had a cow on it or been mowed since 1984. It is a real project getting it ready for us to build on it, but the Kubota will make short work of it. The trees I run over don't slow the mower down at all - the only thing that does at all are the large fire ant mounds in our heavy clay soil. Even then I just let off the pedal momentarily and then go right back at it.<br>The engine seems very smooth to me, and I like the position of the hydro pedals. I have yet to use the brakes, except the emergency brake, since the tractor stops real quick when you let off the hydro pedal.<br>The tractor seems very high quality, and tough as nails.<br>The reason I didn't bother look at JD is because once I decided I needed a NEW tractor I didn't want to wait for the JD. I walked in the Kubota dealership and picked out my tractor from stock. Got it the next day. I probably would have decided on the Kubota anyway, since the 4200 is much heavier. The kubota rides on a 16 foot trailer real well.<br>I got R4 tires and I have mowed with the 5 foot Rhino finishing mower with excellent results as well. Takes 25 minutes to mow my one-acre personal playground.<br>I'm not selling Kubotas, but you asked. Hopefully you will get some more feedback from 4100 owners, who seem to be very happy as well. Seems like I heard you can't put a backhoe on a 4100 if you're inclined to do so, and the loaders on the other JD tractors seem to be short supply.<br>If you're considering JD, I would look at the 4200, which is pretty much equivalent to the B2710 according to specs I've read. A lot heavier tho.<br>

Rob. I just got my new tractor last weekend and I would have gone crazy waiting a week to figure out how to use it. My dealer gave me a 45-minute training session on where all the dip sticks, filters, etc are, plus how to operate the machine. The only thing he didn't get into was changing implements, which has been an adventure so far.<br>I've got one of those orange tractors, a B2710, which I believe is smaller than the JD 4600. It has the Hydro trans. Basically, there are three levers on the left fender. One is to put the transmission in low, medium, or high (or a choice of 2 neutrals). Another is to engage the rear PTO, and the third is to engage the mid-PTO (I don't use that since I don't have a belly mower).<br>On the dash is another lever that you pull downward to increase the engine RPMS.<br>I don't need the PTO to run the loader - I don't have a backhoe but doubt you would need it for that unless the PTO runs a separate hydraulic pump or something. On the right fender is a lever to shift back and forth to 4WD. The direction that has a picture of the tractor all one piece is 4WD, the one that shows the tractor in 2 pieces is 2WD.<br>I push in the clutch (a pedal on the left side) and hold it while changing to another gearing range, to engage the PTO, or to shift to and from 4WD. My manual says to engage the PTO while at relatively low RPMs (I do it about half of rated PTO RPMS - about 1300), ease of the clutch, then move the lever to give it gas and get it up to rated RPMS. My tach has a special mark on it at about 2600 RPMS - this gives me 540 RPMS at the PTO.<br>Once in gear I just push the forward pedal (on the right) to go forward and the back pedal to back up. There is another pedal to lock the rear differential.<br>This is not the same tractor, but hopefully the basics are the same.<br>Just go slow and stay away from stuff. Also, LET THE TRACTOR WARM UP for 5 minutes at about half rated RPMS before putting under a load. This seems to be standard for all diesel tractors.

OK this is really embarrising, like reading directions or asking directions. Any of you have any pointers for changing out 3-point implements easily? Should you connect left then right then top, or right then left then top, or top then left then left....? PTO first or last? Basically I'm talking about a Rhino rotary and Rhino finishing mower. I spend more time changing out the mowers than doing the job. Also need help from my wefe to guide the lower links to the pins. I keep having troubles, especially getting those pins out of the stabilizer bars to take off an implement. BTW, my tractor is a new Kubota 2710HST.<br>I used to change out implements on an 8N when I was a teenager and don't remember having all that much trouble. I have lost the touch or just don't know what I'm doing anymore I guess. I'd like to get where I can change back and forth between the mowers without being discouraged to the point where I don't want to do the little finish job tonight because I need to do rotary mowing tomorrow.

After reading lots of good advice on this forum I purchased a B2710 and took delivery on Friday. I have lots of mowing to do and got started on it Friday night with the finish mower. I mowed about 7 hours with the bush hog today (Saturday). I heard some of you saying to run only 75% of rated RPMs for 10 hours for breakin. I asked my dealer and he said

In order to mow you have to get 540 RPMs out of the PTO, and to do that you have to run it about 2600 RPMs. The tach goes to 3000 but I don't know what the "rated" RPMS are. Well I ran the mower at the proper RPMs, as I don't know what you can do with a tractor at only 75% throttle. Drive in circles for 10 hours? Hopefully I haven't caused any damage. I have been warming up for 5 minutes before applying a load tho.
What are your dealers telling you? I think my manual just says not to use high RPMS with no load and not to idle for long periods during breakin (except for 5 minute warmup?)
I also note that it is very difficult to get the shift lever to engage the PTO or to put the tractor in gear. Will this get easier when it breaks in? "> Breakin period for new Kubota

Well now yall have got me wavering now. What I failed to mention is that my wife is 4'11

On top of the money for the tractor I'm gonna have to get a trailer to haul it on since I presently live 6 miles from the land, and there any structures on the land yet.
By the way, this forum is invaluable. I probably spent 3 or 4 hours reading it over a week or two before posting my own message. What I gather is the that big 3 are about the same, depending on the dealer. "> 8N vs Compact tractor
