This was my first week back to the aerospace grind after my surgery, I haven't done any landscaping yet and the customers are ringing the phone way too frequently. After the rain stopped yesterday, we had some sun. Today, we had 70 degrees and sun. Our vernal ponds have come alive, the peepers are singing for a hot date, the eagles and hawks have taken to nest - can the crickets be far away? Its great to be alive and part of it all!

Hi Billy, very interesting, but more common than you might think. For some reason, maybe its because when we get really old, what was once important to us loses its value. My Grandfather, the dairy farmer, was a Deere man from the word go. He had a water cooled horizontal magneto sparked Deere circular saw that he used mostly to cut up logs. The blade was turned by a flat belt, the engine really lived up to the "Johnny Popper" name. He loved it, until chain saws made their arrival, then the once often used saw went behind the barn - for thirty years. During that time, the solid steel wheels rusted where they touched the ground, trees grew through the wooden frame, which rotted, and around the engine. The whole thing sat neglected until he "discovered" it in his very old age, about $300 and more than a year later we restored to its past glory. Regardless, I never got over the way the trees grew through and around the entire machine! Thanks for the photo, it sparked fond memories.

When purchasing a Woods product, from a source other than a Cub Cadet dealer, you would need to order the right sub-frame for your tractor. The backhoes I mentioned can be configured for either 3pt hitch mount, or sub-frame mount (even skid steer). This allows the units to be sold for a variety of applications. As I mentioned, you really need the sub-frame for the Mitsubishi 7000 series units.

If you do buy one of these backhoes, you should also have the front end loader. Why? The Woods manufactured front end loader is designed to mate to the sub-frame, thus transfering loads and stress produced when using the backhoe, past the somewhat delicate joints of bell housing, transfer case, and transmission. The bolts at these locations are prone to stripping if the tractors are used with 3pt hitch backhoes. Should you add the backhoe or not, always check the torque values of your frame bolts periodically.

Being a second generation landscaper I can tell you that, quite honestly, short of metal, plastic or concrete the hungry white tail deer will eat just about anything that grows including those shrubs, grasses, small trees, and flowers that are touted as being deer "resistant." Despite trying all of the remedies listed by all who responded, the only limited success I've had has been through the systematic application of either Bobex or bobcat/mountain lion yearn.

Works for a while, but if it rains, the half ton rabbits are back at it over night. The most effective method of keeping deer from the plants are tall fences (over six feet), deer netting, shotgun (12 ga), rifle (.223 up), and M1 Abrams tank (preferably driven over the deer).

I designed and built a Zen Garden for a client using an Acer palmatum dissectum (Japanese lace leaf maple) of specimen size costing seven thousand dollars. While most deer eschew the Jap maples, one chewed it-right down to the trunk. Nothing is sacred to these pests!

It may not even be hydraulic fluid, as tractors have a way of holding water from being washed or run during a rain. Here is a simple and safe test, it is by no means conclusive, however, it is easy and painless to do. Blot the wet fluid up from the floor with a clean white cloth (cotton), take out the hydraulic dip stick and touch the wet potion of the stick to the same cloth, next to the fluid botted from the floor. Do the two marks made by the fluid look the same? Are they oily to the touch? Are they fairly clear - no carbon staining as in engine oil? Then you probably have a hydraulic leak. As Ken said, approach with caution.

Snog, your loader control valve assembly has two spools, a single lever operates both through a linkage. Examine the linkage free from the spools by removing the two clevis pins that connect the linkage to the spool. If the linkage is free of kinks or binding, the problem is in one of the spools.

There are two tiny ball bearings on the loader boom (arm) raise/lower spool piston. These provide the "detent" or friction that holds the boom in float, as Tom said. If one or both of these tiny ball bearings has come out of position you will have a binding action that will keep the spool from working properly.

Disassembly of the spool is not for the weak of heart, there are springs that can fly if you aren't careful. Best to leave this issue to the dealer, especially if your machine is under warranty.

Jonathan, glad you made the decision to buy. That is good news, now for the, "...what did I get myself into..." news. You didn't say what you are buying, so how much tractor you have will determine how much work you can do, and how efficiently. For the average CUT owner, a backhoe, as the other guys have suggested, will work out really well. For most part-time operators, the smaller buckets work best because they dig with the least resistance. Bigger CUT's with very powerful FEL's can, with the use of MFWD, dig deep enough to take out sapplings - several in one bite. But as Ken mentioned, care must be taken in how you address the ground, lest you twist your loader frame. Sub-soilers, middle busters, steel 3pt hitch fingers, and root rakes may do, but I never had much success with this method, mainly because to do this kind of work professionally requires me to do it fast. That leads us to the "not so much fun" solution.

When I have many stumps on large lots I sub-contract the job to a fellow contractor who uses a Rome Rake, a blade with curved heavy teeth that mounts to a crawler tractor, like a Cat, in place of the dozer blade. The Rome Rake, which was manufactured by Rome Industries (Fleco is another source), literally rips a path 15' wide, removing all obstacles, and pretty much leaving the soil intact. If you have quite a few stumps, and don't want to spend the time to dig, check your yellow pages for lot clearing or construction contractors, then get some estimates. But remember, every dollar you pay someone else, is a dollar you won't be spending for attachments like a backhoe, which are really handy to have.

Dear Broken, you did the right thing. About your dad, I've been there and know how it eats at the mind. You find yourself preoccupied almost all of the day, and when the mind gets weary it is like there isn't any power left to make even simple decisions. You are a good son to be so concerned, help him fight the disease but don't fight yourself in the process. Good luck to your dad, I bet he's proud and comforted to know you are by his side.

I also received the collector's hat last Friday, nice to know the sale was appreciated. The card with it showed a diverse group photo of JD employees, my dealer said they probably assembled my machine, who knows? The most important thing about JD to me is the service I receive from my dealer, there are many quality tractors on the market, but in my area, quality dealers of any brand are on the decline.

Another nice thing about JD, when I need parts or accessories that require no dealer action like setups, JD ships them FedEx right to my door, and doesn't gouge my eys out in the process. I absolutely love that!

I've heard of aircraft tires filled with nitrogen to prevent condensation from freezing at altitude and damaging the tire through bead/seating problems or an out-of-balance condition when landing in freezing weather. But propane? Wow, how dumb is that?

It certainly sounds like Beagle is on the right track, air in the system would cause such behavior. Air normally enters any hydraulic system after it has been unused for even a short while, like overnight, but nearly all modern cut systems bleed the air after a few cycles of the control valve. If the implement(s) is/are doing what you describe without you touching the control valve, then you have something going on beyond normal.

It is possible that your pressure relief valve(s) is/are not operating properly, or you may have pump cavitation (where your hydraulic pump is actually pumping air into the system). In any event, as Beagle suggests, eliminate the simple things first. The NH TC35 has dual pumps, so rule out the power steering pump. Now if the problem doesn't remedy itself after cycling the control valve, run a system pressure test and also test your hydraulic fluid for water.

True enough, quality costs. Jon, what I suggest is that you make a list, over the course of several days or weeks, of everything you want to do with your tractor, or everything you expect it to do. With list in hand you will stand a better chance of making the right selection than if you just made a guess. It is fairly hard for us to make a suggestion to you when we don't know your total plans. You may find that for some projects it would be wise to rent, rather than buy. A rental is there only as long as you need it, you don't have to store or maintain it, and if the projects are over several years time, chances are a good rental yard will have the latest types on hand with the latest features.

Dear Stephen, the situation there started out with an occasional half-hearted sniping action by the "freedom fighters" or rebels. My friend Glen had completed the mandatory military training, as did his wife and two of his three children, and they were well armed at all times. Glen's favorite weapon was his Belgium FN .308, full auto, his wife always carried an Uzi. But they were farmers, more than soldiers, and with the helicopter born troops being more than 45 minutes away, contacted only by radio because the phones were always out, there wasn't much advance warning when things got more complicated.

As time went on the raids became more organized, with attacks coming at night by twenty or more rebels. They would retreat when fire was returned. Then the rebels switched to day time, and killed workers (blacks) in the fields. The white minority ruled government told Glen to move his family into the nearest town where the army had a presence, they did, and enjoyed safety.

While returning to the farm (with a small military escort), Glen learned that his in-laws' Mercedes was hit by an rpg. Glen's wife's father was killed and her mother died shortly after, they had been supervising the farm workers, they were there because they were well respected by the blacks and felt they would be safe. The army suspected it was the workers who killed them (or allowed them to be) because they feared "necklacing" or being hacked by the rebels. That was hard to take, but the true hardship follwed after the white minority government ceded power to the blacks. Glen was allowed to return to the farm, and kept ownership and operation, until the politicians decided their fate. Danny Glover, the actor from "Lethal Weapon" film fame, and several Afro-American politicians, focused the world's attention on the "injustice" of white rule, and, well, black power has become global power. The rest is the kind of history we don't hear about because of political issues. You can't always "take them with you," sometimes it just doesn't work out that way.

A quick word about the farm. It was magnificent and had all of the industries' best equipment. Years ago, I almost fainted when he told me his new tractor, an MF, cost over $100K (U.S.). Glen farmed wheat and meat, a lucrative combination, and was a millionaire several times over. When he left, he had only the money he was able to wire to Switzerland before the government put a hold on banking: about $200K. He arrived in America with five hundred dollars in his pocket, he wanted to start farming in the US, but couldn't get the credit necessary. Such is life.
