Next, I have sold several pto generators in the last year. The 25kw I have available requires a minimum of 35 hp, but typically 2hp/kw is a good rule of thumb. A tractor with a good governer will help since a the load increases the more power the generator takes to turn. I started a 10/16hp (68-72-amp) fan motor on a drying bin with the 25kw being turned by a 110-hp tractor. Let me tell you that tractor lost some carbon build-up with that start, but it got the load turning. If the generator's rotor turns too fast the hertz frequency will be too high causing motor loads to turn too fast also and vice versa when it's slow. This is fine for resistive loads, ea. lights, stove, water heater, but may damage motor load over an extended run time, ea. refrideraton compressors, pumps, fans. The best way to keep the hertz in check for a average homeowner is with a 120v dial-type clock compared to a quartz clock. If the 120-volt clock gains time, the generator is running fast, if it looses time it is running slow.
Getting back to generators, a pto generator will get you more KW/dollar usually. I like the idea of having a tractor, which is more apt to be fresh for running. A self-contained gen-set requires maintenance whether it has run or not. You will need too keep fresh fuel around for it and with a diesel, you may need to change between no. 1 and no. 2 when temps drop below freezing. There are factors to take into consideration with a generator like rotor speed and brush or brushless. The one's I sold were brushless and the rotor turned at 1800 rpm. Many brush-type and brushless turn at 3600 rpm, you tell me which one will run longer. "> PTO Generator

Thanks for the help everyone. I found a perfect 60 hour '98 JD 770 with GreatBend loader and 513 cutter. I added a JD 35 blade. I'm all set for quite a bit less than a new 790. The competition for these tractors is stiff in Colorado. You have to be the first guy there to have any shot at all on a good used unit.

For about half this much money you can get an old 8N or 9N Ford in creampuff condition. Since you don't want a loader and don't need 4wd, you would be better served with an old American tractor in refurbished condition. Then you add a good bush hog or finish mower....or even both. Still way under your budget. Those old Fords are a smooth quiet-running tractor, comfortable seat, and much less bouncy than a compact diesel over bumps.<br> Other models to consider would be the massey Ferguson T-20, the International Harvester A, C, or H. and the John Deere H, 40, 420, and 430 - to name but a few. But the Ford is probably the favorite. All of these makes have their attendent owner's organizations complete with magazines, parts, and advertisements of restored tractors for sale. And having mowed with old American and compact tractors both, I prefer the more comfortable tractors. <br> Roger

I called New Holland today and the repair manual is Manual No.86599230 and costs a hefty $130.00. Would be interested in hearing from someone how user friendly and helpful it is.

(2)Wheel weights. After switching from gear to Hydro, I'll never look back. Our's is still new, but I don't know anyone who has ever had a problem. "> 4100 price

After thinking about this neutral issue I have decided it is probably planned and a good thing. On a lawn tractor you do not (and probably can not) pick up 500+ lb. implements with a 3 pt. hitch. On a compact tractor you often connect to heavy implements with the 3 pt. hitch. Since the likelyhood of moving the heavy implement is slim it may be better to move the tractor into position with ease. I also suspect that some engineers were far sighted enough to believe that you are capable of setting a park brake and would like the freedom to make minor positional adjustments with little effort. Just my 2 cents worth, I have been wrong before and will most likely be again.
