Thanks dana - I live in western massachusetts where we get about 100 inches a year and I have a steep 300 foot dirt driveway. I guess I know I need the plow but $2500 bucks? Does this blade have a breakaway bar at the bottom edge or is it solid the whole way (ie what does it do it you hit a rock). Thanks.

I have no proof that warming an engine reduces wear....I've just always believed in it. But here is how I look at it: An engine is designed to operate hot, not cold. Lubrication, combustion, and clearances are all set up to be at their best when warm. So I try to minimize cold running, and usually warm the engine up at a fast idle for 5 minutes or so before loading it or particularly before using high RPM. I

I know people who start 'em up and start to work immediately - under the philosophy that the engine warms faster under load and therefore spends less time running cold! Again, I have no proof at all. I will say that only once have I seen damage that was clearly traceable to cold clearances and cold oil, and it was a transmission - not an engine.
If yours still start easily it would be hard to say that they have been hurt. But what about cold weather? How do you get them started at all? Sometimes its way below zero here. Roger Loving "> Winter Use and Startup

I was quoted a price of $18,000 for a new TC29 4WD with loader and box scraper(Land Pride brand box). Does this seem about right? How has the reliability been on these machines?

I bought a 12,000 watt pto Gen. that I power with my JD 750, which runs fine up to about 9,000/10,000 watts. I chose pto because: 1. Mine is on a trailer and easy to hook up even for my wife. 2. I didn't want another engine to maintain. 3. I have a tank for diesel fuel which always has 50 to 100 gals. 4. I have elec. heat and can use this to partly heat the house.

MY drive is 2000' long. I use a skid steer with a 6' blade it works great and can get anywhere, it has a three sided enclosed cab but not as warm as the cab of a truck. I just bought a used JD 750 with a front mount snow blower, so I will give that a try. Those of you that have a blower, do you think I should also keep the back blade on?

Steve,<br>I just sold my 750 with 1600 hours. It ran the same as the day it was new and I expected to run it well into the 3000 hour range with no trouble. I found a 750 with 60 hours on it and just couldn't turn it down. I got 6500.00 for it with a 5' bush hog. (It took only days to sell at that price)

I own a commercial snow removal company an we use JD lawn and garden tractors to remove snow off of side walks. We started out using chains but soon found out that they can be a real headache.The problem is that they still spin and can cause damage to pavement,they are bumpy and if a cross piece comes loose it can scrath up your tractor. Also chains wear and eventually break and a tractor with chains on one side is almost as bad as not having them at all. What we started using were bar tires with some weight on the tractor. The tires seem to hold up well and in reality do not cost much more considering the number of chains you will wear out. If you deside to use bar tire make sure you price around , the price differnce can be pretty healthy. Good luck and remember YA GOTTA LOVE THE SNOW!!!!!

Breck: Does the tractor have a mid PTO? ($1000 option) I just purchased a 4400 synchreverser with: 4WD,Mid PTO,R3's,Folding ROPS and Dual SCV for $16,000.<br>The loader quote you have is good! I was quoted $3125 installed. What size bucket? 60

Well, thanks for the clarification on front drive train vs front wheel/axle load. I suppose that it is possible to load the bucket in such a way that the rear wheels leave the ground! And this would surely put a stress on the front drive system in 4wd. Of course you would need to be in 4wd at the time or you would find yourself in

I've finally got around to looking at this entire thread, and noticed that Art brought up the point that reduced flexure of the tires was the reason for decreased machine life with liquid fill. I'm not sure that I agree, but expressed as he did it is certainly a point worth pondering...I do agree that tractors get most of their soft ride from using the low air pressure and soft tire combo as the suspension spring....and that this would benefit life on things like wheel bearings (and people!)
Yes, 800 total pounds is a lot of advantage...BTW, how do you like the 1030? I've been an advocate of MF tractors for years, and always looking to collect anecdotes on them.`

I just bought a used SD 1540 this summer with 594 hours for 2750$ It is a grey mkt tractor but I love it so far. Have to turn my implement lower 3-pt pins to the inside because lift arms can't swing out far enough because of narrow rear end. Check that on the 1840. Can get parts at a place in Greensburg IN called Lowes Tractor and Eqpt. They have a web page. I love my machine. Have a bush hog loader to mount yet, but use a 4' bush hog and 5' finish mower. The dash is almost identical to the older New Holland/Fords.
