As I'm planning out the construction on my property, I want to pick yur brains regarding what to plan for in the way of fire safety.

The property is 1.5 acres in the woods at about 4000 feet. All the Pines have been removed from the property but firs, etc. still remain.

Currently there is a doublewide mobile with a steel roofed shelter built over it. There are two out buildings, wood frame and siding with steel roofs.

The plan is to turn one of the out buildings into an inlaws residence, move into it, and tear down the trailer, replacing it with a new home.

I'm about 7-10 miles from the nearest fire station. The property has a well dug into an underground stream, and there is a couple of seasonal streams within an 1/8th mile of the property. There is a pretty good sized year round stream about a third of a mile away.

Big mountain fire a couple years ago on the other side of the county. Lots of homes lost. So I want to think long and hard about this as I plan.

What can I do to help ensure my property will survive a forest fire?

Also, I'm wondering about communications. Cells phones don't work. There is a ham radio available, but I know nothing about them. I'm wondering what might be a good solution for when I'm riding the quad or the dirt bike out in the backwoods.

If an accident happened, I could never be found. What is a good 'portable', preferably low cost communicatins device for this purpose. Not sure of the capability of consumer GPS devices today. Do they have emergency response features?

My cell phone supposedly has some sort of emergency GPS feature, but I don't think there's any way of sending out a distress call on it. I think it's more for them to locate you once you call in with the cell phone.

John Deere was not the lowest bidder, but they were able to meet and exceed the specification of the contract proposal. None of the other manufacturers were. It is an open and fair bidding process. State contract bids are not anywhere near the same as a DOD bid. The taxpayers are paying for the equipment. That is why the extensive research and comparison went into the purchase process. The Army wanted the best tractor for the money spent that met their needs. The bidding process is a VERY tightly controlled process that does not allow for personal preference. I witnessed how the other manufacturers behaved and actually objectively compared; we were willing to go with whomever had the best product. I can honestly say now that after my experience and dealings with all the manufacturers, that I have a preference and maybe even a bias toward John Deere; but then again, they earned it. I think the glass house comment is probably more "sour grapes" than anything else. I will have to say that Kubota's 30 series tractors are very impressive and appear to be closing and maybe even tieing up the gap between them and green. The military will be buying alot more tractors in the near future and I wish you the best in the bidding process. I think this series of Kubota's will be much more competitive.

Billy, I was really referring to those lever guns which would be considered collectable although modern arms certainly fall into that catagory as well. The only real way to justify the cost either way is to have one that has more intrinsic or sentimental value than the real value of the gun.

I hear ya! I loved the Ford Crew Cab and would have bought one in a heart beat if they had the Cummins engine and NV5600 6 speed as an option. I can still get my 3 daughters in the back fairly comfortable and without too much trouble but would love to have a full crew cab like that.

Thank you for your post...I have a TC45D that I bought a couple weeks ago, and I just called Corriher. $3600 delivered to Pittsburgh, PA for the 16LA loader. How hard was it to install your loader?

I am not too much of a fan of WD-40 as a lubricant. I have had better luck with motorcycle chain lube for penetrating frozen bolts than WD-40. I have also used a product called Kroil that works OK.

We would carry WD40 during the Baja races, but mainly to dry out a wet ignition. This is does pretty well.

My brother in law has one and he likes it. It burned up a while back and was totaled by the Insurance Company, but he bought the carcass from the Insurance Company and rebuilt it. It is not fast, but he has some very steep slopes in Georgia and it seems to negotiate them. I think that the fire was vandalism and not a fault with the tractor.

There is a JD Crawler with Backhoe arm that is seriously stuck on the property and four or five people have given up trying to extract it. He may have to use the Magnatrak to bury the JD. :-}

Not as good as removing the gearbox and cleaning or draining it out but gets almost as much and you don't have to remove the mower or impliment. I have the Model 650. They can be purchased at boat discount stores for around $50.

You need to either look at this machine or get it looked at. These machines do not run hot or in the red unless there is restriction or something low or poor wiring sensor or guage. Dealer or mechanic should be able to help you out.
Try a temp lazer gun to check where your operating temp is . I have found that some Kubota's are very fragile when overheating on a regular basis. Please get some attention to this engine ASAP
