I guess I wasn't specific enough. I have a 1983 JD 650 with about 1000 hrs. When it's 30 degrees or colder the right rear wheel is locked up and the tractor tries to go to the right when I try to move the tractor. I lock the differtial and the wheel breakes loose,there doesn't appear to be any problem with the drive train as both rear wheels will spin when the differtial is lockedwhen pushing snow.

To be honest, I had a lot of fun and did some very rewarding work the last year working logistics projects like the John Deere tractors and several other things. It turned out to be a welcome change. The tumor is beneign and aside from some really severe headache's and a few other whacky symptoms, I count myself very fortunate. The doc prescribes me some drugs that help alot. Over all, it was probably time for me to go. No hard feelings and I can look back at my time in the Army with pride and little "what the heck was I thinking!" LOL!

I looked at this a while ago and did not know where to start.
Ideally the basement should have a good french drain around it and a vapor barrier under the concrete slab.
If the basement is basicly dry you need to be aware that water vapor will be emmitted buy the concrete for years while it cures.
You can seal the concrete with something like water glass (sodium silicate) etc that will slow the water vapor escape.
On this you should be able to lay your underlay and carpet.
You can also lay the modular wood look flooring on this. It uses another thin layer of PE foam which enhances the water barrier. Most are water resistant.
Laying tile is not a problem also unless you have large cracks in the floor. I might use a crack prohibitor also to ensure that the tiles will not crack.
If you want solid wood floors then you can lay stringers but the problem is that the stringers and plywood need to be water proofed. The stringers will need to be nailed and glued to the floor to keep them from squeaking. Trapped water may cause mildew anyways.

For comparision in upper NY state, I just bought the following for $16k: used L3710 HST, 4WD, R4 tires loaded, L682 loader, 300 hrs, one yr left on warranty. Gross HP is 38.5, PTO HP is 30.0. Hope that helps......

Tom you bring up an excellent point about camps. Yep I agree 100% about the old barrels and single leach lines working fine at a camp. Now put a family of four or more on that year round. Here camps on the lakes either use a storage tank and pump it weekly or when it's required. Others have property way up above the lake and pump it there with as many as 2 or more pump stations to a septic system.

I take exception to your lack of concern about slope being very accurate. Slope angle is critical to insure proper drainage with out material moving to fast stirring the tank and moving sediment into the field. Cleaning a used field is not fun ask me how I know. Generally you have to totally rebuild it which if code people are involved want engineer stamped/approved plans. Do not even think of cutting a corner here in the Finger lakes watershed. Sand filters are a requirement and have to be maintained.

If you are doing it yourself do it right with the best information avaiable the first time. It saves headaches later. A well designed system properly installed will function for a very long time with only pump outs every 5-10 years depending on use and climate.

You should bear in mind that the water will need to be kept off the concrete for at least 48 (72 is better) hours after it's poured, and then you will have to ensure that any portions which end up below water have a MINIMUM of 30 days before they are exposed to freezing temperatures or you will find the concrete may disolve in the spring thaw.

You will also have quite a task to keep back that much water. Water weighs 62 pounds per cubic foot, without allowing for any current in that river.

IMHO as a contractor & P. E., it would be far faster, easier, and cheaper to pour the first (highest) slab, then pour the next one right on top and shove it down into the river after curing, then keep repeating this process until you have the desired length.

I paid 11,850 for TC-30 with R4 tires (loaded). For the 7308 loader I paid 3,000. I was quoted $1,000 more for the hydrostat model(I did not want that option). The price looks good but I don't know the price on the mower. I can assure you that you will be quite pleased with this tractor. It is an amazing machine. Once you're on this tractor you wont want to get off. The other night I ran out of daylight and still had three acres left to mow so I turned on the headlamps and continued on(the stock headlamps worked quite well).

I have now had my TC-30 for three weeks. The hour meter now reads 24.3 and it has consumed 10 gals. of fuel. I have spent 18.5 hours mowing and brushhogging with a 60" King Kutter Rotary Cutter and the rest of the time using the rear blade and doing loader work. The machine and all implements have worked flawlessly. Thanks again to everyone on this board for all of the imput on the various machines and implements. With the numerous tractor and implement brands, sizes, etc. it was very difficult making a decision on what to purchase. Using this forum as an additional reference source helped me to buy a machine that fits my needs perfectly.

Yes there are many way to go about rear ballast. I have welded up a heavy frame that hooks up to the 3 point hitch and has steel plates that fit on 1 inch verticle rods. I can adjust the ballast by removing or adding weights, and get up to 1800 lbs or so of ballast. I also have chains hooked to the top link pin to take the strain off of the lift. Has worked great for many years. For instance, last weekend I lifted an old pick up truck onto a trailer with my loader. Worked great.

My TC45 manual says to use the same lube/hydraulic fluid for pretty much everything except the engine. Recently my dealer told me that they were using something else in the front axle of the 4WD. Does anyone know something about this? What alternative lube is recommended? Is there a place to look up changes in service recommendations?

The book and service manual for the tractor do not mention any changes.

the Eicher is a good choice it has a nice air cooled engine and is a realible tractor. I would steer away from the uses Deutz that doesn't sound to much like a good deal. Mark has a good point also have you checked the cost of a new JD engine

Thanks again for the info in ref. to b7800 vs b21. Nice pic. Mark. I only wish our country looked like yours. I think I'm leaning to Ind. type tires R4? Looks like they have some tread but a flat surface at the same time. I'll be going over eveything from horse shoe nails to barrel cactus with 3" thorns. The b21 has less power, but eveything else seems more suited for the type of work I'll be doing. Hope it holds up to the AZ heat. That's the hardest thing on equip. around here. Thanks Todd

lawn and garden tractors will do some ground braking , but won't hold up to much. If mowing will be most of your work it will probly be ok although 2 acers will take some time. if you plan on much ground braking you should buck up for larger unit, in turn you'll double your speed with mowing.

I hate to be the spoiler in all this, but here goes anyway, LOL.

Anyone who does something for a living can tell you the two ways to do something, the hard way, and the way they do it. In the fixing of similar situations, golf courses will very seldom will ever try to shave off high spots. The logic is like this, if you lower the high spot wiythout over-excavating you are really reducing the amount of topsoil in that location, and since there is no such thing as too much topsoil. Besides, this method is a 10th the work or time to accomplish.

The preferred method is to topdress the low spots regularly until the area reaches the desired height. If the topdressing is done in smaller, regular, applications you will never have any bare spots during the work, a real bonus on a piece of working turf, and very desirable on a lawn. Even if you don't completely fill them, you can take the sharpness out of the slope and help keep the wheels on the ground.

Gunfighter and MYDOGROY - a couple of questions - those hp recommedations are measured against *drawbar* hp, not engine gross, right? Anyone have a feel (since the mfgs. don't give that number and Nebraska tests aren't done on compacts) for what the compacts can deliver at the drawbar? (It should be something less than the PTO rating). Would there be an even greater loss hydro-to-gear on drawbar than you see in the PTO ratings? And how does MFWD help fudge those numbers?

I'd be real interested in how the 4710 does with a plow myself - it's number one on my short list right now and I'm sure the whole gang at the "farm" will be comparing it's performance with our two-bottom to the Ford NAA that totes it now.

And lastly (real rookie question here - since that plow is the only one I've ever used) - on different size plows (12", 14", 16") - do they just cut a wider swath or also deeper as they get bigger? I always thought both - but reading some of these posts I'm not so sure.

I think it would be fascinating to try to see if some kind of coordinated use could work out to advantage - example using the hyd. top link to change the angle on a box blade to change it's action a bit but having the draft control automatically compensate for the actual bite being taken. However, I could live with just having an "either/or" situation.

What I'll have to find out is if the reason JD won't provide both on the 4000-Ten's is because *their* combination of parts just don't physically fit together - or if it's because there is something intrinsic to their draft sensing system that would be potentially "damaged" by the forces of a hydraulic top link.

If it's the former - then I could order the tractor with draft control, live with "just" manual hitch adjustments until such time as I get ambitious and make up a top-n-tilt system from aftermarket components that do fit.

If it's the latter - well then that will take some thought as to which feature is likely to prove more useful over time in my intended uses. As someone pointed out - you *can* adjust the hitch angles without top-n-tilt. I suppose it could also be said you can mimic the action of the draft control with a deft hand on the position control. At the end of the day, both are just more convenient ways to handle something that can already be done.
