Other people talk about renting implements. I haven't found any dealer around here that rents them and the equipment rental places don't have 3ph equipment. It may depend on the area.

Even if a rental hoe were available, it would probably be a 3ph type so it could be mounted on most any tractor. There are many discussions in the archives about the risks of damage to compact tractors from 3ph hoes, so some archive reading would be good.

My solution for an immediate need for a hoe and on-going occasional light-duty use was to buy a 3ph hoe that is on the small side for the tractor. Some 3ph hoes aren't too expensive. The least expensive aren't very strong hoes either, which probably is better for the tractor anyway. Rent or buy, a 3ph hoe would be an alternative but the risks should be understood.

Bob, Have you looked at the B7800 yet? I am similar in size to you (6'4" 297) and found the B7800 to be very comfortable. It will accomodate a 60" MMM for your 1 Acre and you can leave it on and mow with a rotary mower on the rear. It has 30 HP so you have plenty of power and it sits a little lower giving better stability. I looked at the 3130 also and couldn't justify the extra money. I would stay away from the 72" MMM on 1 acre. Also, you wanted a front blade for dozing. You might consider getting your loader now on a B7800 and getting a heavy rear or box blade for pushing dirt around. I would bet you will have less money in the whole package and have a much more versatile machine for your needs. I would also be concerned with the weight of the 3130 on my finish mowing.

Yes, there is a key (SBA034303013) and also a seal kit (SBA340490157). It's good to diagnose a specific problem before throwing parts at it, but the parts should be available through a NH dealer (it's better if the parts guy looks up the numbers though).

It sure does sound like a pump failure, although the suction line and filter might be checked for obstructions or breaks. 1710's do have a priority valve for the PS but I'd discount that as a possible problem since all hydraulics including the PS failed. Even if the PS relief valve failed and the priority valve diverted max flow to the PS, I'd still expect some movement from the loader etc. The PS high-pressure line is small and I wouldn't expect it to carry the full pump flow without creating considerable back-pressure.

I wish I had some specific experience to offer from my 1710 with 650 hours. My PS is gimpy but it's there and the hydraulics just keep working. I'd expect the pump service lift to be quite a bit longer than 1,300 hours. You might check with a dealer and just replaced the pump if it's getting close to the end of its expected service life. It's much colder here than in NJ and I use either NH F200 or an AGCO multi-season hydraulic oil. My dealer recommended the F200. The local snowmobile club's groomer is a converted NH farm tractor that uses 134D all winter. I can't compare 134D with the Valvoline oil, but 134D probably wouldn't cause a problem in your area.

I forgot to answer your question on spring loaded , or manualy adjusted belt idlers. Hand tightened would probably work ok as long as you check them on a regular basis, but spring loaded ones really work neat. I've also found that it's a good idea to take the covers off the belts every couple mowings to clean out the dirt, clippings, etc., that will collect under there. I've allways been amazed at how much power you can put thru that single V-belt between the gear box and the blade spindles, I've never had to replace one. I'll shut up for now and let others give you their ideas.

I'm not sure I understand the tach cable problem. Were there two cables broken? Maybe the dealer figures something is wrong with the tach head and the whole unit needs to be replaced.

Normally cables can be replaced separately from the head, and they aren't expensive. They also are pretty reliable. Cables like white grease and they don't like sharp bends. You might see if rerouting could straighten out some bends.

If the tach isn't working now and this is the second time it broke, I think I'd make a case to the dealer that the problem occurred under warranty and just wasn't diagnosed--so replacement of the head should still receive warranty coverage.

Generally a front blower could be rigged up for most anything. People whose tractors don't have mid-pto's usually find that the idea isn't very desirable.

Sorry I can't help with comparing specific models. It was a few years since I shopped and then it was mostly by phone. We're in the deep country and no dealers of any kind are close. I'm just not up on different manufacturers and models.

There are a couple of conventional wisdoms that might help. The first is that small tractors do about the same jobs as big ones, it just takes longer. The second is to buy the biggest tractor for which the budget is comfortable. Few people regret having extra power. However, some good reasons to have a smaller tractor are: high-qualify finish mowing, tight maneuvering and need to work in heavy bush.

I see I made a wrong assumption and now I'm not sure how the backhoe fits in. Digging stumps maybe, although a heavy-duty rotary cutter probably would whack most of them and most stumps could be pulled unless they have tap-roots. A chain saw might be cheaper than a rotary-cutter for the whacking and of course wouldn't take the tractor HP required for a heavy-duty cutter (which is an argument for a big tractor). For terracing and landscaping in general, I a box scrapper or better yet is fancy blade with hydraulic tilts, angles, off-sets etc. (and especially end- plates) as doing the work rather than a hoe. For cutting side-grades such as terraces, level pads, road crowns etc. long blades are easier than short ones (another reason for bigger). I do all landscaping work with a box scraper with hydraulic top-link, but I don't have to cut extreme side-grades or ditch. If I did, a fancy blade would work better.

Our frost gets deep here. Well heads and lines are put in 5' deep, so I need my 6' hoe and 24 PTO HP tractor minimum (more arguments for bigger).

This is getting long but I'll carry on and put out one idea. If the idea is to unload pallets of building materials from delivery truck flatbeds with the tractor, very big is needed. You'd need a fancy pallet fork replacement for the bucket and many pallets still might be too heavy. I have similar needs but I have a 3ph forklift for that work since it is specifically designed for pallets and the unit also will carry more weight than a loader unit. I guess that's another argument for big, but the length of this post no doubt is an argument for small.

Just a slight qualification to what Mark said: My oil furnace oil dealer says the diesel and the furnace oil comes from the same tank. That's likely true generally but it'd be good to check. At least in theory you might expect refiners and dealers to take a little more care with cleanliness and storage of fuel intended for diesels. For example, good practice is to buy diesel from fairly high-volume stations. It's possible to get some water from condensation along with the diesel, and furnaces are much more tolerant to water than diesels are.

Around here it's called furnace and stove oil, with stove oil being the lighter. That compares with #2 and #1 diesel respectively. Either can be run in most diesels but #2 produces a bit more power. #1 doesn't gel under most conditions and starts a bit easier. Furnaces also can take either but I believe that different orifices are used. People here who have outside furnace oil tanks generally run stove oil. If there's not a source of dyed diesel nearby, using furnace oil will save some tax bucks.

I was looking to get some advise on a purchase. I'm looking at a JD GT Series Tractor and was hoping someone could clarify what the differences are between the GT and the LT Series. I know the one is a Garden Tractor and the other is a Lawn Tractor. But what are the real differences? It's been a bit confusing talking with the dealer. I have an LT155 which is working fine (a little tough to start sometimes) but thought I would look into a possible upgrade. Is the GT a "REAL" upgrade and why. After an hour with the dealer I'm still confused. Any help appreciated.

You could try other Dealers, but reckon you won't have much luck finding a new one in the Deere inventory.

Roger, I'm not familiar enough with a JD #80 loader to know much about them. If you live near any agricultural aeria there are usually consingment auctions that you can find listed in the paper that will have a wide variety of used equip. from the biggest to the smallest. I don't go to them much anymore because I allways brought home something I did'nt need, but they're fun to attend.

Well I got the tractor yesterday and had the loader on by last night. That was the best 150.00 I have saved in a long time. the loader went on very easely.

Art: Just goes to show how much trouble guessing can get you into--although I not 100% certain that I'm not being put on. If so, I probably deserve it for one reason or another anyway. I'll take it as a good answer but stop short of thinking that R means Royal.

It is curious that my 1710 owner's manual lists R3 fronts but no such tire is in the repair manual. The repair manual lists only G and F front tires, and tires don't seem to be in the parts manual at all. I'm thinking that tires are the dealers' business so maybe the factory manual can be expected to be a bit confused.

I think it'd be good to drive several different tractors around to get a sense of the differences between various variations of sychromesh, sliding gear and hydrostatic transmissions.

With tractors you don't shift as often as you might think. The main purpose of a TX in a tractor is to set the ground speed. Tractors have to run at PTO RPM when using a PTO implement and the TX is the only way to change ground speeds. Normally you pick an appropriate gear when a job is started and never change it. Tractors don't have to be shifted like cars to get up to speed. A hydrostatic transmissions is a whole different idea.

The main problem with shifting comes from loader work-it's a lot of going from forward to reverse. You'd normally be close to stopped when shifting anyway and you might be able to live with a slide-gear TX. With most you don't have to be absolutely stopped to shift and the Kioti TX may be generous enough to keep you happy, but you can't get in a hurry and jam one in gear. Of course, HST is what most people want for a lot of loader work.

If mowing is the main intended use, you might want to look at mid-mount mowers--they are expensive though. If a MMM is interesting it would be good to check what's available for any tractor with an existing loader. Many combinations of loader and MMM mounts aren't compatible and then a loader has to be removed to use the MMM.

From the description, it sounds like a box-scraper would be good for a lot of the grounds work. Hydraulic top-links make box scrapers much more useful, so a tractor with an existing rear valve controlled hydraulic outlet would be good.

I've never been certain where these '15's fit in--whether they're somewhat dressed up or dressed down 10's. The 20-series was out when New Holland bought Ford in the early '90's and I don't know if the 15's were something Ford had out or if they were minor production changes by NH.

At any rate, NH would support the tractor now. I dealer likely would want your buz and would sell you most any new or used implement. A dealer also should know what implements are recommended for the tractor. I believe 1210's have a CAT I 3ph, so plenty of new and used NH and after-market implements are around.

In terms of the power, PTO HP is the most common was to compare tractors because of widely varying efficiencies of transmissions. I do know that the 11 and 12 models are treated differently from the rest of the compact line, which run from 13's to 21's. HST transmissions were available for 1110 and 1210's but not the other compact models. I think the 11 and 12 models were intended mostly to be small mid-mount mower tractors and I don't know how well they'd accept a backhoe. That's the sort of thing dealers know if we can't come up with anything specific here.

Thanks. I called customer service and was told that the serial number I have was actually made in 1996. Although I bought the unit an an auction, a local dealer has offered to show me the features and functions tomorrow.
