I just installed a block heater in my 2150 last week. And yes you do cut the small hose coming out of the radiator and permanantly plug it. Secure the remaining length of the hose with a zip tie. The fitting is on the lower right side of the block, and is a pipe thread fitting, about 1". It is NOT a allen wrench type fitting, it has a raised boss on it, with the nipple for the small hose in it. It is tight to get to, you can't quite get a pipe wrench on it, and channel locks don't do it either. After cogitating on it for some time I took a cold chisel, and with a hammer tapped on the fitting boss, counterclockwise of course, it loosened up and pliers did the rest. The heater itself is a pipe thread fitting with a little heater element, real simple, and very effective. Not knowing your level of mechanical expertise I don't know how alarmed you'll be by the thought of beating on your 'bota's block with a cold chisel. In my case, after wasting time making a special wrench to work on the oddball fitting (which didn't) I went to the cold chisel method, well known by shade tree mechanics as a last resort for stubborn nuts, all it took was a few taps to jar it loose, and a couple minutes later the job was complete. Piece of cake!

Thanks for testimony. Any prudent decision is predicated on research, either scientific empirical data or testimonial review. Who wants to spend 20k and find out their machine is inadequate and underperforming ? I don t think you ll find any takers here. That s why this site is beneficial.

That would be the case for your 1710. However, the Yanmar gray market system is a little more primitive and all of the FEL's that I have seen on these tractors plumb the same way.

Non-expert here and a long way from tractors.

Near as I can figure, this planet is an extreme accident, and that accident is maintained in critical balance by what's called the carbon cycle (a web search will return many hits even if many of them are more than a little off-centre).

Far as I know volcanic activity is essential in the carbon cycle to return CO2 to the atmosphere that living organisms took out in forming carbonates in shells etc. The shells etc. become ocean sediment on its way to becoming limestone and then back into the magma in the areas Peters mentioned. Sunlight and rain drive the cycle and cloud cover provides a feedback mechanism. I think that hydrocarbons are sort of a sideline in terms of the carbon cycle but they also result from organic processes and are formed into oil, coal etc. by heat and pressure.

In terms of self-sufficiency, bio-chem probably has synthesized the organic processes and factories could be cranking out hydrocarbons, but it's likely still cheaper to pump them out of the ground. A curious way of thinking about self-sufficiency and reserves is that the idea can't really be separated from price. High oil prices would improve self-sufficiency since it would reduce consumption. Reserves also would be increased. I was never sure if the Teapot Dome actually has oil. There's a bunch in the west that's probably not counted as reserves because it isn't economical to extract it compared to the pumped variety. I still hope to buy diesel for my compact without mortgaging the house though.

Rich - If all else fails, do you have an FEL? When I sharpen my blades on my 6' cutter, I pull my tractor up to the cutter until the FEL extends all the way across it. I wrap a chain under the far side of the deck, hook to the FEL, raise it up until it stands on the side nearest the tractor, then carefully lean it back against my grill guard. That way I can sharpen my blades and oil the swivel points standing up with no danger of anything falling on me. If I wanted, I could pull the fill plug and drain the oil.

BruceZ, Thanks for the follow-up, I'll be looking forward to the pictures. My machine also has outside push frames and I was under the impression that it was made by JD. The blade has a center pivot and the outside push arms attach to the blade via dovetails on a radius with 2 wedges on each side that are pounded in to hold the blade at the proper angle/level. You also mentioned a fix for stripped bolts on the running gear. I have a broken bolt which is 1 of 4 that holds in the main clutch housing. A previous owner tried to drill and get it out with an easy-out but he really messed it up. Looks like he tried to work around the track instead of getting it out of the way. Now I see my only option to remove the engine/clutch and have it bored out and retapped at a machine shop.

I'm curious about it too. I imagine the lever Art referred to is the lever on the injector pump control shaft rather than the hand throttle arm. Governor linkages also have a few levers.

The pump throttle control arm is moved by the governor linkage in response to changing loads or hand throttle positions to change the throttle position and keep constant rpm. If the governor is pulling back the engine after throttle increases, then you should be able to see the control arm on the pump move. If the arm doesn't move then the engine has surged above the governor and is just settling back. Of course, it might be kind of tricky to see the lever if the problem only happens when driving.

It's something that probably can wait till spring. The problem may prove to be the hand throttle friction plates or other problem, but most governors have several adjustments, and there are several springs that can become worn. I think I'd lubricate all moving points on the external linkage (but not the hand throttle friction plates as mentioned) and inquire from a dealer if replacing the springs or other governor maintenance are appropriate owner maintenance procedures. The adjustments aren't ordinarily owner procedures.

I don't actually have a backhoe but as a check around for one that will fit my 4100 I found the Kelley hoe. I used to get the site to come up fine but I just tried it myself and it won't work. I saw it on the site and I believe it was a frame mount unit.

I see several people reference Mobil 1 synthetic oil that you use. I used to know a chemist at Mobil who recommnended I use another synthetic product of theirs for any high output gas or diesel engines, it is called Delvac 1300. This was originally made for diesel engines and sold to truckers. According to the Mobil web site

I have used this oil for years in everything from cars to motorcycles with always improved mileage. It is a higher detergent oil than gasoline engine oils and is available in 10W30 and 15W40. I buy it at diesel truck stops in 5 gallon pails. Can't remember what I paid last but it was cheaper than Mobil 1.

Hopefully this helps, 1) the warrenty will stay with the tractor, so you will have the remaining warranty. 2) go with the FWD, if you ever resale this machine, the difference you pay now will be nothing compared to what it will be later, in other words, I highly recommend the FWD.
3) I would recomend buying a hydro. If the new one is more than you can afford now, Ill find you a used one. I just sold a JD4300 2001 model with hydro, FWD less belly mower for $12600, the unit only had 145 hours on it. Belly will run you another $2200 new, but used ones are out there too. If you buy a gear drive, sooner or later, you'll have to split it. These Hydro Transmission have been holding up VERY WELL. The first time you split the Trans. You paid for the Hydro. This implement should be fine on most 24 hp tractors, the bar rides on the ground. You might put water and CACL in your tires to give a little extra weight. The old model 9's were a little cantakerous and slow. The new versions of sickle cutters have double cutting actions and improved pitman arms. They will cut up around 7 mph. The old style cutters were less than 3 usually and would plug.

1. Mechanical stress is what I was concerned about. That would be alot of lever on the bearing surface.

2. Thanks for the Power-Trac recommendation! That may be the ticket...I am sending for more information.

3. I've got a good idea on how to mount the duals on the BX if that is what I end up doing - I've done it before on a GRASSHOPPER lawn tractor.

4. I've got three friends with BXs. I've had them on the property and ....well, they are just a little short on stability.

I think D_C_B gave a pretty good eval of the 790 and compacts in general. Personally, I picked my 790 for the value and intended use. Mowing pasture and cleaning horse stalls. Plus I have not touched a wheelbarrow in over a year! Anyway, its a simple dated dependable design. Less features = less to go wrong. I am 5'10" and I think the cockpit is a little cramped. The tranny is not the most efficient. The machine is a little light (I also filled my tires). Lets face it plastic and wingnut should not be used in the same sentence. That said I am very satisfied and would not trade it. When I first got it I thought it was a little small but after a year I think I will have it for another 19 or so. With the hundred hours per year that I put on, it ought to make it. Good luck.

Try a look at Mazzotti. They have come out with two models that operate well on the three point. They are of industrial quality and have their own pump, filter, and resevoir. One fitting your needs is available for around 4495.

Thanks for your thoughts. I did find a site for the Association of Equipment Manufacturers that did list tractors by horsepower: below 40hp, 40-100hp, and above 100hp. They present statistics for 2001, 2002 and projections for 2003. During 2002, the 39 manufacturers reporting claimed to have produced about 170,000 tractors, of which 95,000 were in the below 40hp category (about the size of a CUT, and subCUT/SCUT?). Many of the international manufacturers were not included in the pole. The site is at AEM dot org slash Trends slash IndusOut slash PDF slash soi-0207 dot pdf.

Based on the very informal inputs from this forum it looks like Kubota may have sold about 30,000 CUTs, Yanmar(Deere) 15,000 CUTs, Shibaura(NH) 15,000 CUTs, Daedong(Kioti) 12,000 CUTs, Mitsubishi(Case & Cub Cadet) 8,000 CUTs, Iseki & Hinomoto(MF) 7,000 CUTs, and Mahindra/Daedong(Mahindra) 5,000 CUTs, Long 5,000 CUT�s, and Belarus 3,000 CUTs, for a total of about 100,000 units. Then you toss in the Gray Market, the Chinese box tractors and other smaller importers, which may have sold 15-25,000 more CUTs & SCUTs. Whew!! Gives international tractors a whole new meaning!

Let�s keep looking for the real numbers. I just looked at the Deere 2002 annual report online, no unit numbers, just $ profit and loss.

I have owned a TC29D with FEL and MMM since April of 2002. I love it and could not imagine being with out it. Other than a probem with the rear tires (one tire was 1 1/2" taller than the other), it has performed flawlessly. I just wish we would get some snow here in Wisconsin so I can see how it performs!

Tillers suffer a lot from abuse and neglect. They are higher maintenance than a disc. Usually about twice the price of a decent disc. A complete set of tines (which by the way don't last long on hard new ground) is expensive. Admittedly discs aren't cheap to replace either, but the ratio of replacing tines to replacing discs is about 3:1.
Only a gear drive tiller would hold up in such a condition. The King cutter is a gear drive but constructed with Chinese Gears. If a tiller is what you want, try a BALTIC center gear drive. They have a ring gear and pinion style that will last years and it has the weight and frame to handle obstructions. LINK
