Kubota dealers have a little book called the "Ten commandments of Tractor safety", I know you didn't buy one but a dealer near you might still give you one as it is a good place to start. I make it a point when working with "Virgins" to give them all the help I can.

Mark, We go to after market for the top links when the factory ones are to short or to long. The paint doesn't match well but getting the job done is important and a quick Dupont tune-up takes care of the colors. UDT is the standard hydraulic fluid for Kubota and vary simuliar to other hydraulic fluids. Super is a partial synthetic that was built mainly for the Glideshift transmission. The super is a little thinner and helps in cold weather to get circulating faster.

The turfs are the same size as the R4. All you need is the size off the turfs. I have turfs on the front and R4s on the back (955). The turfs tear up the lawn less than the R4. The main problem is the back end slides a little on side hills when mowing.

What you PROBABLY..I repaet PROBABLY have ther is What John Deere calls a "Power-Beyond" Hyd. option.

This consists of two rear couplers, one male, the other female. There is no contol valve plumbed within the circuit, but there is a relief valve.

There is oil flowing to the couplers at all times, when the engine is running.

It is used for Back-hoes, log splitters, hyd motors, etc.

It's was a fairly expensive option on 855/955's, because of the plumbing and shop time required to install. This was a field intalled option only.

You can use this circiut for cylander operation if you instal a control valve.

Then unless you need taller wheels for some reason, the 7500 is a step down in stability and power. The 2410 has virtually the same power with just a bit more weight and, taller wheels. Is you dealer telling you about this top link part? If so I can call if you provide the number. Mark

I leave an implement on (usually the box) when ever I'm doing loader work. The tractor gets nose tippy and the steering is heavy without it--especially with unloaded tires or wheel weights. Tire weight make a tractor less likely to kiss the ground but don't lighten the steering.

I'd use ballast, but then depending on exactly what's being done, I'd probably be moving soil around more with the box than the loader.

I think I just figgered something out. The Kioti 1914 is the same exact physical size as the 4100 and the same size 3 cyl/20hp engine, and it is 500# heavier. Steel.

My volumetric efficiency comment was taken from a 2000 Intertec publication that contained reprints from 1973 articles. The article gave a volumetric efficiency range of 70% - 90%. I guess that's for pumps actually found on tractors during the 60's - 70's. Within the range, vane pumps would have the lowest efficiency and piston pumps the highest with gear pumps in the middle.

I'm not certain, but the way I'd convert volumetric efficiency to pump flow is the take a rated no load gpm. Multiple the rating by the efficiency at the pump's rated pressure and then prorate the flow reduction to the operating pressure (the loss probably isn't straight-line but it should give a decent approximation). The same article gave typical intermittent pressure ratings of 4,000 lbs. for gear pumps (compared to 15,000 for good piston pumps). Perhaps pressure ratings too have changed in modern times.

I'd sure be interested in knowing there are design improvements that have improved pump performance since the '70's. An alternative is that hydraulics on tractors has become much more important since the '70's and maybe manufacturers are simply using more expensive pumps.

I don't know about the rpm thing either. I run my hoe from tractor hydraulics (7.8 gpm minus the PS priority valve). I usually run below pto rpm at around 2,000. Feathering and precise control is a little easier there than at pto rpm. I ran at quite a bit lower rpm when I first got the hoe until I got my hoe skills up a bit.

If I had to guess why PTO pump manufacturers recommend speeds lower than pto rpm, I'd guess something to do with efficiency. Volumetric efficiency is only one component of losses. Mechanical efficiency gives other losses--mostly due to heat that is generated by the pump. It's possible that the type of pumps used on pto's are more subject to heat loss and have greater overall efficiencies at lower speeds.

Matt: That's a real unfortunate thing to happen. I pretty much agree with Jon that the repair is likely to go beyond what many owners can do themselves. It's not so much that it's all that complicated, but some tools, jacks etc. that most people don't have are needed.

To illustrate, the link I included gives a parts diagram of the 1310 front differential gears. The front axle mounts to the frame by a stub that is part of the differential case and goes in the axle pivot. Additional support comes from a rear mount that the pinion shaft goes through. The diagram does not contain the drive shaft tube.

From your description, it's not clear what is disconnected. But the axle can't actually disconnect from the tractor unless the pivot is broken or if the pinion shaft/tube assembly failed and allowed the differential case to move backward and pull the pivot apart.

However, the exact reason may not be too important, because as you can see there are a lot of parts involved if the pinion shaft/tube has to be disassembled. That job would be fairly daunting to many owners. A broken pivot mount might be easier, but there's a pretty good chance that a broken mount would also have broken something else. A simple looking job could turn into a major disassembly, so I wouldn't start unless I was confident I could tear down and reassemble the entire front end. I also wouldn't work from a parts diagram alone. Repair manuals that give procedures, specs and adjustments are needed. For example, a disassembled differential needs to have the pinion pre-load set.

From all this, I hope you conclude that it's a very good idea to have manuals if contemplating even fairly simple repairs. NH sells both repair and parts manuals. I don't think after-market manuals are as detailed. There! That’s my compromise for posting a piece of a manual. I'm actually trying to boost manual sales.

Good comment from Mike about a tractor being too light too angle the blade. Although mine goes over 3000 lbs, it has turf tires and I guess that might limit how much a blade could be angled as well. Traction and power problems can be managed to an extent by taking smaller cuts, by adding ballast and going slower. Usually additional passes are required, but it does work.

Many passes may be good for smoothing drives but most people probably want to drive a ditch once, and they probably don't want to spend time fooling with ballast. A trial might identify what will work best but just asking a dealer for a recommendation might be faster.

Something I'd keep in mind is that end-plates used to carry material on the blade adds to traction requirements. It takes quite a bit of traction to drag my 6' box with a full load of gravel even with the cutter adjusted to drag rather than cut. It's not uncommon that I can't drag a full box when I'm in deep uncompacted gravel. I suppose I could cure the problem with more ballast, but generally it just seems easier to go with smaller loads till I get it spread out more.

Another thing about end plates on a blade is that the ability to drag material in part depends on the weight of the blade, and blades generally are lighter than boxes. If the blade is too light ,a heavy load of material can cause the 3ph to float up and dump it. Weight, such as sandbags, can be added to blades but that's causes more stress on the 3ph mounts.

Generally I think that boxes are easier for grading work than blades, but that's in large part because they weigh more. The rear cutter also can useful although they don't turn tractors into dozers. 3ph's are designed to pull rather than push.

Just reading your adventure with a trencher, I have a Kelly 3pt. hydro driven trencher for my Yanmar 2220D. It will trench 30" deep currently but I am planning on adding another 12" in the future. Takes about 30 min. setup and about 15 min. to remove it. My tractor has 26 pto. hp. and this trencher is a load, 30 hp. would be better. Here in Southern Illinois the clay hardpan can be as tough as concrete. I am satisfied with my trencher though, much easier most of the time than using my backhoe. Less mess.

No, finish mowing is not the primary use.

1) How many Acres? 15 that get brush hogged once a year, 3 that get mowed weekly, 12 that get hayed once a year and finished mowed 1 - 2 times/year.

2) What Tractor do you have? Kubota L3710 for the big work, 18HP Craftsman for the 3 acre yardwork.

3) Mower Width Belly or 3PH? 72" 3PH on the L3710, 44" belly on the Craftsman

4) Are You happy with it? Extremely happy with both machines. The L3710 is 4yrs old, the Craftsman is 18 yrs old.

I went to the Farm Progress Show yesterday in Alleman Iowa and visited the New Holland diplay. They had a TC40D there so we started it and it makes the same noise as mine. I talked with a service tech while I was there and he said he would give the New Holland engineers a call next week to see if they knew the cause of the noise. In a nut shell he said the noise was normal for the TC's.
