And within your posts, lies my lifetime problem with draft controls.

If the tractors attitude is changeing due to un even ground and the draft control is used to maintain plow depth...wellll....cool...I like it.

But if it raises the plow in a hard spot in the field...well.....nutts!!....That was the main purpose I chose to plow that field in the first place.....to break up compaction in the rootzone of the soil structure. If I cannot do that...why am I out there? Practiceing converting diesel fuel to noise?

I'm not trying to be sarcastic. Over ther years, I've watched as my neighbors were pulling larger plows on the same tractor as ours, and bragging how much better thier's pulled. Explainng to them what was actually happening never worked.

It became so frustrating, and we were the butt of a few coffeshop jokes, I snuck over to the neighbors and disabled the draft control on his 4020 Deere in the middle of the night. The field he was currently plowing was flat as a pancake so it would do no harm.

He fought it for a couple hours, finally he dropped to a lower gear.

I stopped at the fence and talked with him mid morning and shared a cup of coffee from my thermous.

"Ground sure is hard this spring" was his only comment.

I let him off the hook before he called his dealer to complain about the sudden loss of power.

He didn't speak to me for quite a while, but I did notice overnight his plow was a bottom shorter the next day...same size as ours...what a coincidence!

Kinda busy right now so this will be short and to the point.

If you have a loader on that 4110....Rear ballast is important for saftey.

If you live in a cold climate....use anti-gel in the fuel when temps start to drop below 20 F.

Wear out the operators manual, the pages should be dog eared if used properly.

We have lots of cattails around our ponds and I normally just back up as far as I can with my brushhog and cut them... but!!! Here in Ohio there is a lot of land reclaiming and this includes ponds. There are companies that will come out to your house and actually pull out the cattails for their reclaimation.

I found a simple trick that minimizes the damage to our lawn that I've done working on it with a backhoe.<br>

The problem is getting excavations back into the holes or trenches without tearing up more lawn. Perhaps, our turf is more fragile than most, but several times I've simply torn the sod that’s underneath a pile of excavation while trying to backfill holes with the loader. Try to push much of a layer of dirt into the hole and the sod underneath comes along with it. So, much like an old haircut, I'd end up 'taking a little off the top' several times and then finish with garden shovels and rakes.<br>

I dug several holes a couple of days ago looking for our septic tank to get it pumped, and a bigger hole once I found the tank. This time, says I, it's going to be different. I put vapour barrier down where I was going to dump the hoe. When I back-filled, I put the loader in part way up the pile and expected to take a little off the top. Big surprise, the whole pile including vapour barrier scooted into the hole and I just pulled the barrier back out. Neat as a pin, no work and the grass is still there. I've heard of people doing the with old sheets of plywood but vapour barrier is what I had.<br>

I just bought as older Steiner S-20 with the Onan engine, and a loader which I believe was on a 420. Problem is the muffler sticks out the side about three inches too far to allow attaching the loader. I'm fairly handy with metal and tools, but I look and look and don't see a good solution re relocating the muffler. Any ideas please?
Also, is there a Steiner discussion page? This page seems to get very little participation (I'm used to the Farmall Cub page which gets several dozen posts/day). Thanks...

No expertise here, but I believe the most common ‘soup-up' is turning up the fuel. The procedure usually is simply placing heavier weights on the governor. However, few people can do that for successfully themselves, and many mechanics might be reluctant to do so for other reasons.

However, some stripped down tractor models use the essentially same engines as more expensive models but have lower HP ratings (Maybe to steer people into bells 'n whistles' models). Essentially these engines are just de-tuned, but I don't know if governor weights would be the only difference. The fuel on such engines probably could be turned up, but the engine would run hotter and might need a bigger rad. One of the things a properly designed governor does is to make it hard for any load to over-heat the engine. I don’t imagine it would be great to have a plow a bit large for a tractor and have to plow a field while always keeping an eye on the temp gauge.

I'm wondering if it always starts and runs OK and then won't start after shutdown or whether there's some variation to the pattern?

For example, once it starts will it run OK in a long hard run of several hours? If it starts, will it start again if it's shut down after only a short idle? How long does it have to sit before it will start again?

Exhaust smoke often tells what's going on with a diesel. Is there appreciable exhaust smoke and if so, when and what colour?

Full of questions I know, but maybe the answers will trigger somebody to figure what's going on with the engine. The question 'how many hours' is important to be able to guess if the problem is low compression. A guess a companion question is when the valves were set?

It sounds like your primary applications are lawn mowing and snowblowing with the snowblowing needing 4WD for traction. The X595 is optimized for these applications. You do not indicate a need for using a lot of 3 point hitch implements. The compact tractor being taller and heavier would probably handle 3 point hitch implements easier than the X595. The X595 can be equipped with a Cat I 3 point hitch, but it is only well-suited for certain down-sized implements that have hitch dimensions to match the "short" Lawn and Garden Tractor dimensions. In addition there is a significant difference in horsepower in favor of the X595. I would go with it.

I'm not sure how the t-fittings are going to work. If both legs on the high-pressure line run to an open centre valve assemblies, operating a control valve on one assembly leaves the centre open on the other valve and no pressure will be developed. However, a disconnected quick-connector does block its line. The idea seems to work as long as both legs have quick-connectors and only one leg at a time is connected.

T-fittings in power-beyond return lines should work as long as no valves are downstream. The 3ph is downstream on many setups, and operating the 3ph creates pressure along the entire line upstream from the hitch. A t-fitting ahead of the hitch would allow oil to return to the sump rather than developing pressure for the hitch. T-fittings in the TANK return line on a PB valve assembly probably would work without complications.

I'd take some care in selecting a control valve assembly. The 3ph probably is down-stream from the valve. The exhaust oil parts of some valves are not designed to withstand operating pressures. The 3ph can develop enough pressure to break a valve if a control valve is operated at the same time the 3ph is lifting a load. Some simple control valves assume that the return line goes directly to the sump.

Protecting the exhaust oil parts from pressures developed by a downstream valve is the reason for PB valve assemblies. The TANK line carries cylinder exhaust and is isolated from the PB return line. Hence the name 'power-beyond.' They are intended for applications where there is a downstream valve. In other words, there is power beyond. The alternative to a PB valve is having a valve assembly that is rated for pressure on its exhaust parts or just assuming that the 3ph will never be operated at the same time as a control valve.

I’m not sure what NAPA does, but hydraulic lines come in a wide range of grades. I’d check that the line used is typical for ag operations.

Mark......I have a '98 325 with 17hp single kawasaki. 48" deck. It has 250hrs and is in "new condiition" My dealer is allowing me $ 3,700. on a trade for a new X585. Taken care of, they do hold their value. Have you checked with a dealer on a new machine? The price for a comparable new machine may not be that much more than what your looking at.

I would think twice before puting a loader on a 2wd tractor that size.

Jeff makes a very important point about ballast. We sell small Yanmars and we will not put a loader on a 2wd Yanmar under 20HP. Even with ballast, the results are dissapointing. Two big concerns, the first being safety, the second concerning the usefullness of the tractor when mounted with this implement. Fill the bucket up and try to drive across a soft sandy area, or for that matter, pull your front tires up to a 2x4 and see how much your rear tires spin trying to push the heavily laden front tires through the sand or over the board. Then there is the issue of the strength of the front axle. A 4wd model helps overcome the traction problem, even if there are still some stability issues. In either event, if you need a loader, I would go a little bigger with the tractor, and get a 4wd model. If you do go ahead with the loader, be very careful when operating.

I had (just sold it and bought NH TC33D) a '47 9N and remember somewhere something about lifting 750 - 800 lb. when new. The TC 33D is rated somehwere around 1600 lb. Of course the farther out you go from the lift arms the more leverage you get resulting in less weight rating. I was moving 2- 14' long 6x6 treated timbers for a pole barn by sliding the ends under the axle and rsting the middle on the york rake and was surprised it could still lift them both at the same time. (Yeah, I know, that is machine abuse but I have a bad back)

The DK-65 is the largest sold here. They have been sold here for some 9 years, but initially by a separate distributor.
In Canada they have been sold longer at least 14 years.

I seriously doubt this needs to be replaced. Almost anything can be repaired. Let's see some pictures. If the loader frame is bent see if an auto collision shop can straighten back out on their frame machine. I've seen some very handy guys do amazing rebuild work, you just need to ask around.

I mow with a Landpride rear discharge mower. I've never had a problem with buildup but I mow after the dew has dried. I agree with Ted. Sounds like he's got it going to me.
