When with a loader power steering is considered a near must, maybe we need to look at other used tractors. For the $1000. savings to buy with out I as a dealer when seeing a tractor that is altered to have one as much as it is a benifit to the tractor I would rather not see that tractor modification or one of that type and would futher discount it's value at trade in time.

I thought that I needed a high snowblower to do my driveway here in central NY do to the snowfall we get. I found that by using a snowblower I didn't have the drifts that piled the snow in when blowing and it was a far easier task with a blower. Is your drive paved or stone? The BX series has been doing a great job here for the owners in this area but what other uses do you have?

Stan the tractor you are looking at is a thirty horsepower hydro and has a retail price of 17000. and change not counting the loader with a retail of just over 4000. not counting the other attaachments. The unit you are looking at must have come from a contractor and you might want to know who, as far as maintence performed. The front tires being low on rubber tells me it was used on pavement.

Tom, alot has to do with age of a diesel engine when it comes to cold weather starting. We are in central NY and less than a third of our new tractors go out with a block heater. The newer tractors all seem to start better than the old ones but there are still differences. I would say it is an option, but a battery charger set up on trickle will keep your battery fresh and you will not need one at all.

I suppose it's of academic interest only since Whitworth isn't going to work with NPT thread and a replacement part is inexpensive at any rate. NPTF for fine is another standard.

I used to have charts for Whitworth bolt threads from my motorcycle wrenching days so I can't now say if the pitches are the same. Even if they were it still won't work beause the threads have different shapes. Whitworth thread tops are cut around a radius point rather than triangular or truncated triangular. A Brit machinist told me Whitworth has greater efficiency than other thread forms (efficiency defined as percent of thread shoulders in contact). It is a very good thread. Good holding power, seldon strips or cross-threads etc., but it's also more expensive to produce so I guess that's why it's not so common now.

I know that the hydraulic ports on my Ford are NPT or NPTF but the steel lines are metric. It makes buying fittings and adapters almost impossible except at NH prices.

I had a similar experience to Peters. I bent a bolt on a table saw and had to cut off the head with a bolt cutter. I knew I put the saw together with metric wrenches but in fishing around in my nuts n bolts box I found a bolt that screwed in just fine. It looked like a standard 1/4" bolt, and wrenches in inches fit it. I think I've got it figured out that manufacturers are matching standard thread and shafts in inches with metric heads. I have no idea why, but it makes working on things interesting. Maybe not as interesting as some latter day Brit Bikes that had Whitworth, U.S. and Japanese Metric all on the same bike. The toolbox you needed outweighed the bike. Maybe I over-state.

Well Farmhouse, you are correct, I am in upstate NY. The shower idea is something I have kicked around and what I plan on doing is installing one on the back of the house. I have a deck there just abaft of my inground pool. After a hard day's work, I will strip off the dirty clothes and use the hose to wash before I jump in. That works fine if the sun is out and has heated the 150' coil, nice and warm until it is used up. I can easily run the shower from the laundry room to the deck and build an attractive wood enclosure. The deck is 6" off the ground so I don't even need to install a drain, it will run between the slats, kind of how my old cottage was built in the 40's for the grey water. That's a good story. It's also one that I understand because people around here are the same way. You just don't want to stick people with something that's not going to work no matter how low the price. It's sort of the opposite of 'Let the Buyer Beware.'

Just thought I would pass this along. A John Deere dealer in Southeastern Minnesota has a 2001 TC40D with Supersteer, loader and the 84" midmount mower with about 80 hours. The tractor looks perfect and I think he is asking $21,500 for the package. If anyone is interested in the dealers name and phone number I can provide it.

I've only had this unit a few weeks, so my experience with it is limited to mowing and smoothing some gravel.

I have the bar tires all round, and the only time they have left a mark was with the loader attached and running on the gravel, you could see the tread marks, but nothing serious.

Without the loader, I haven't had any trouble with them cutting up the lawn, but then my lawn isn't exactly golf-course green quality either.

If I were only using it for mowing, I'd go with the turf tires all round, and use the 4WD to handle the slick spots, otherwise, I'd go with bar tread front and rear.

Also, loading the rears with fluid should help with stability and traction whichever tire type you have.
Mine were loaded by the dealer, so I never tried it without fluid.

i purchased a New Holland TC29 (gear Tranny) in April. Its euipped with a Woods 1012 loader and a Woods 7500 backhoe. The 7500 has basicly the same capacities as the N.H. 757 hoe but is constructed a little beefier. Price on the FEL was $2500 @ $600 cheaper than the N.H. 7308 loader. And the price on the backhoe was $5500 @ $900 cheaper than the N.H. 757 hoe. Total out the door price was $20475. The hydro TC29D would be @ $1000 more.

On the surface this is going to sound stupid-- but if you want to move the sand quickly to a pile or even a long windrow(s)-- use a pickup-mounted snow plow. I haven't done it but have talked to fellow contractors who in a pinch have had to use a snow plow to move dirt. I have a v-plow that inverts forward that would scoop and push the sand. Once it's piled or windrowed get or rent a bobcat and a buddy's dump truck --just make sure it will raise high enough to clear the truck sides.

The solution I believe is venting. The composite headlites on your car have capped vents that prevent--or rather--vent the moisture. I haven't had the problem with my TC33D but when I do I will drill a 1/16" hole from behind. To keep dust from getting in there a breathable cover such as band-aid over the hole seems like it would work.

I'm a contractor with a 33D and a 6' box with ripper teeth. The key is 4WD and two front weights. A potential customer told me "only a dozer" would cut down his hard-packed Michigan clay front yard. Long story short-- I dropped the ripper teeth about 3 inches and was able to pull right through. Got the job too.

Are you buying or selling? For grins and giggles you might want to find out what the dealer cost is (using a Ford employee discount). With that discount I paid the same for a new one as they wanted for one a year old.

Tom, there are a lot of great ideas here I have a few additional thoughts and comments for you. Guessing from your title I would say you are in NJ. Lets say you are doing 600 feet at 4 feet wide 2,400 sq ft total. First do you have to be perfectly level? You want a smooth path but can you follow the natural contour of the ground? In other words can the path meander up and down a little as long is frendly to those who might be walking inparied? This means only minimal tilling would be needed only to make a smooth surface. I can't see doing major excavation if it can be avoided. If you have to many rocks I would fill rather than till. You only need to be smooth enough to stone on top of. So unless you have bolders this would work. It would also be easer to go around anything large rather than breaking your equipment. We are talking a path not a sidewalk.

I would hand rake the area and tamp with a foot tamper before spreading stone so that minimal product is lost in the sub soil. The best stone type product for NJ and for those heels and wheel chairs would be 3/8 crushed stone or what they call quarry blend (3/8 to dust). Quarry blend woud tamp to a nice smooth surface and still be porrus. Asphalt millings would also work well tamped. It would be nice to end up with a 2 1/2 to 3" thick finished product. Any surface dust would be taken of with a good rain or wash down. I would pull in fill (top soil) to the edges do a little seeding and keep the path clear of weeds with a little Round-up. Pressure treated 2x4's set vertically and pinned with rebar make a reasonably priced edging if the buget allows.

I have new TC33D with super steer and AWD/FWD. In the "AWD" mode the front wheels automatically engage into four-wheel-drive mode when they sense slipping compared to the rear wheels; no spilpping and they disengage. This is handy when mowing so it doesn't tear up the lawn when turning. On pavement it doesn't allow the wheels to bind or "jack" when turning (you'll know when it's in FWD 'cause it will leave tire marks on the pavement an indication there is is resistance i.e. tire wear) I was pulling a drag on a large lawn and found that when making sharp turns it tended to engage the the front axle causing unwanted oversteer. If I let off it would correct itself and steer properly.

With only 20 hours on it the starter had to be replaced! And the dealer wants to charge me for a service call to replace it. Anyone had this problem and does NH Customer Service get involved??
