Thank you for your response. I have been looking for some while now and everything I have found here in the Reno area is way outside my price range.
I contacted the dealer and inquirred about the hours. He said there were 2000hrs on the unit. The rototiller is the only impliment that shows signs of heavy use, teeth worn down but the seller has agreed to replace these.
I contacted the seller and he said he has owned the jd950 for 10years, buying it from a neighbor in california that had moved. According to the seller, he has changed oil and filters regularly and has been quite happy with the unit. He upgraded to a larger tractor upon moving to the Grants Pass area and no longer had a need for the 950. He did say he had an orchard in Calif. The only thing he said he knew about that leaked was a line on the stabalizer leg of the backhoe, other than that everything else worked.
Does the asking price $10,800 seem too high?

Well, I went to pick up the 425 and guy was very busy that day. After waiting for two hours for him to show up he fianally made and explained he wasn't sure he wanted to sell it any longer. I thought great he knows what he has all of the sudden. When inquire as to why he would make me go through all this trouble and not sell it to me..he said he felt wrong about selling it to me in the condition it was in so he would sell it me but not for the agreed up $700 BUT $300. as is. Well this no brainer just got easier. I loaded that tractor up and got out there like I stole it...because I did at that price. Within and hour of getting it home I had it running. Tomorrow well see what it can do.

Tom, I do my calculations as follows:
80 X 160 = 12,800 sq.ft.
12,800/12 = 1067 cu.ft. for 1 in. of material
1067/27 = 39.5 cu.yds.
39.5/21 = 1.88 transfers (truck with trailer 80,000lbs)
The transfer can carry 25 tons and still meet the 80,000lb gross load limit. Sand weighs 1.2 tons per yard. This varies somewhat depending on the moisture content in the sand. 25 divided by 1.2 yields 20.83 yards and I round up to 21.
I hope this makes some sense. I do these calculations almost on a dialy basis and have gotten to where I can do them in my head and be pretty accurate.

Looking for a John Deere blower to fit a 420. Have checked

I don't often deal with the two-cylinder Yanmars, but I suspect the oil switch is similar. On the 3-cylinders, the switch turns the dash light on at pressures under about 14psi. Also remember that the threads are very close to 1/8" pipe...but they are not. They are British Pipe (someone can expand on this as I only know that they are darn close but different). Best to get the Yanmar switch as it is cheap and correct. If you are in a hurry and want to pick something up at the local parts store, Standard Brand PS-171 works perfectly.

I have closely examined the tires in question and I think there is a difference in diameter between the sets. I have also noted in the sales brochure that when they talk about total width or ground clearance they use the turfs as a basis of measurement, so I think the turfs are a little taller and a bit wider. The front and rear tires on a four wheel drive do have to be matched but there is a margin for error and most of the time the front axle is designed to run a little faster (a couple percent) anyway. <br>

That said, the question is: Will it hurt the tractor to mix the tires? Most likely it will not, especially if you remember to take it out of 4WD when operating on asphalt or other hard surfaces. <br>

But the concept is a little screwy to me. What does he do with the other parts? Does he have a room filled with surplus front bar tires and rear turfs? I have heard that some folks who a use heavy tractor for finish mowing will some times mix tires like this but only after it is demonstrated that the front tires tear up the lawn on tight turns.<br>

I may be biased, but standard bar tires in my view have very limited usefulness. They are nowhere near the universal application tires. If you are pulling heavy loads over, or plowing in, soft WET soil, then that is your tire. For almost any other task I would recommend another tire style. <br>

If what you are planning to do with the BX2200 can be done better with a turf tire on the front then I think it calls for a matched set all the way around.<br>
As far as the shifting the PTO functions, this could be another indication that your salesman may be a recent product our ‘improved’ school system or from the shallow end of the gene pool. <br>

Did he use the clutch? It is the stubby metal petal on the left floorboard with a cartoon picture of two gears coming apart. Nothing irritates me more than folks trying to sell or demonstrate something that they know nothing about and will not or cannot read the manufacturers operating instruction and specifications. <br>

Newbie here to tractors and diesel engines. When do you need a block heater? I live in New Jersey, our winters vary from mild, a few snow storms, to getting dumped on. We will get periods of cold weather, below 0 for sometimes for a week or so, but most times temperature are above 0. I plan on using the tractor for snow removal and will have it parked in my shed, no heat, and on my driveway when I expect a big storm. I know heating the engine is better for a diesel as far as wear of the parts go, so do I need one? I think Kubota has one for about $100-$150.

If you can use a yanmar, similar to john deere, then price equipment on john sevier hwy. may have what you need for a real good price. I'm about to buy one there myself. It's advertised in the bargain mart.

Lynn: I just converted 10-acres into a square plot and figured the time to drive 6' strips @ 4-mph. Overlap and turnaround adds time onto this sort of crude estimate, and minimizing turnaround is something I've gotten much better at with a bit of experience..

Generally, I go around the perimeter until I have enough space swing wide and mow end to end. If I keep going around the perimeter I end up with very short rows in the centre and then have to turn around more often. When I first started grading and snow-blowing drives I found myself doing one pass and then backing up all the way to start another. I remember thinking ‘boy this isn't too smart, I'm driving a lot while the tractor isn't doing any work.' I figured out how to cut out turnaround places for myself. I think that coming up with patterns for working areas is almost an art form and most people eventually come up with what works best for them. It is something to think about though.

I finish mow about 2-acres over two properties. Each are cut up by buildings and landscaping and break down into a fair number of irregular plots for mowing. My 1710 probably weight over 3,000 lbs. with fuel, an empty loader and me. Even with turf tires my wife comments about the tracks if I drive on the lawn much. I also have to avoid tight turns even in 2wd and when it's fairly dry or the front wheels will tear the turf.

In practice, I mow with a 36" riding mower and don't have a mower of any kind for the tractor. The riding mower certainly is easier on the lawn and probably is faster than the tractor would be since it doesn't leave near as much trimming to do. Trailering the riding mower to our camp is much easier than driving the tractor 10 miles on the highway too.

Tom: My old Ford 1710 has PS so I guess my interest is academic, but I am curious about how the actuating system on your conversion works. The factory system on my Ford uses end thrust of the steering wheel shaft to actuate pressure on one side of the sector gear or the other. If I understand, the way it works is that the PS keeps working as long as you keep turning the steering wheel. I don't know if a converted system works the same way.

Around here, most things are done in pit-run. I guess glaciers did the granite crushing and left something between fine and course plus sand and rock dust.

At least pit run on driveways compacts well but is a bit messy until surface sand and dust washes out. Then you get a pretty durable layer of more or less crushed granite. I'd say maybe less durable because it won't support the weight of blower skid shoes during the spring thaw.

Pit run here is an alternative simply because it's inexpensive and very available. It isn't going to look as nice on a walkway as if you started with clean stone. However, the stone bedded into sand freezes well, and snow blowers can be used without making rock showers. I don't know if snow removal is a consideration.

I'm close to buying a new TC40D(new=6.5 hours put on by the dealer working on his driveway). Here are the features and the quoted price: Super Steer, 17LA FEL, ind. tires, 72" Bush Hog, Price=$23,600. An added $300 for adding remotes. Is this a fair price? I've looked at some of the other posts and it doesn't look bad. Also, there is the option of financing at 0% for 1 year, 1.49% for two, 1.99% for three, and 2.99% for four.
As for the rotary cutter, is a 6' cutter the right size for this machine or will it handle a 7 footer (enough HP)? Is there any noticeable difference in performance betwwen the TC40D and the TC45D?
Is the standard bucket sufficient for moving dirt and other light to medium loader jobs or should I be looking at a HD bucket--I won't be trying to dig with it. Finally, who mfrs the engine?
I really like this tractor and have appreciated having this discussion board's help. BTW, I'd be going from green to and blue and will have to paint my kids' toys if they want to be "just like daddy". Thanks.

A picture sure would help. Me recommendation - cut off enough to even them all out and install a pressure treated kick board. For example, if you cut off 11", you can then install a PT 2x12 horizontally, (toe/kick board) to replaced the rotted wood you removed.

Mr.E: The subject of oil analysis comes up here from time to time, but I don't think a testing company was ever identified.

My impression is that testing usually is done by equipment fleet operators who extend recommended oil change intervals. However, I've always thought testing would be a pretty good idea for private tractor owners for the reason you described.

I'm purchasing my first tractor and snowblower, and would really appreciate some advice. I must plow 3/10 mile fairly steep dirt road, most of which has no area to store snow. My truck with blade just isn't up to the task once burm is 3 feet (which can be one storm)- have gotten stuck many times. Can get 2+ feet/storm easily, all types of snow. Want front mount. Have been reading forum, but still would appreciate suggestions since I haven't purchased the tractor yet. Wonder if the Kubota BX22/00 is up to the task with the snowload and steepness? Other options < $20-25K? Is strength a factor in driving these tractors? Help! And thanks!

BushHog, Howse, and Leinbach are three that I've tried out. Bought the Howse new at an equipment auction. Saved $150 on a 60" mower. Don't use a finish mower on the pasture because the ground is too rough.

My 2002 790 does not have wingnuts securing the primary or secondary air filters. The air filters have a built in silicone gaskets that push on and are locked in place by the top housing. It appears that JD has been reading these posts!!!!

Has anyone used a mmm on a tc40d? Am I going to have prblems with scalping (84", right?)? I'd like to avoid having to buy another machine (such as a ZTR) but would using a mmm not take the place?

Man, if you get an answer to this let us all know. I've greased the h**l out of the foot treadle shaft to no avail. I thought there must be some other place to lube but I could never find one. The Boomers leave some things to be desired for ease of maintenance.

Another problem I have with my 33D is the 3pt raise/lower lever is really sticky. And there's really no easy way to get close enough to the bottom of the lever where it rotates on its stub shaft to lube it good (I try to lube it with a pressurized can of grease with a flex-tube extension). Why NH didn't put a zerk on that bushing is beyond me. A mechanic I know says he might be able to get in there to drill and tap it without having to disassemble half the dash and right fender assembly.
