I worked as a mechanic for an OMC dealer for 3 years. We did not push the OMC oil, but also had the Castrol on the self beside it. If you read the label it was blended by Castrol. I think it was some dollar difference per quart 25 years ago.

Actual lightening protection is sort of a big deal. Extensive grounding and the use of heavy braided conductors are required. Some radio transmitter buildings use grounding rods at opposite corners of the building. The idea to equalize electrical potential inside the building so the chance of 'jumps' inside is reduced.

The general idea is that a strike draws current from a wide area through the ground. Sometimes the air is the least path of resistance and so a jump occurs. What isn't desirable is for something inside to be part of the path of least resistance.

I've done the opposite corners grounding thing at our house and camp but using standard 200A grounding wire as part of the service grounds. My inspector says 'Oh that's the old lightening trick. May not do much but it won't hurt either.' Some years back I did the same thing at a rented cabin without electrical service. I had a base antenna for a battery operated CB as far up a nearby tree as I could put it.

Whether this sort of thing helps or whether the lightening risk is appreciable is anybody's guess. I don't think that getting electrical service will make much difference to the lightening risk. As I mentioned, actual protection is a big deal, and I don't have it. I opted for a bit comfort from a maybe marginal solution and maybe no solution at all.

I hope it's surface rust and a factory paint fix does the job. If it's perforation by the time bubbles are noticed there's usually a lot of damage that isn't apparent.

Around here so much salt was used on the highways that the government paid for people along the highway to replace dug wells with drilled wells because the surface water was salty. Nearly everybody gets an oil spray undercoating each fall. The tar stuff is mostly for noise reduction and some people say it makes rust problems worse.

Oil undercoating is best as a preventative. Once panel cavities are perforated and open to road salt from the undercarriage, salty sand packs in open areas and eats the body. Undercoating then slows it down a bit but not too much.

My '89 Ford 1/2-ton hadn't been undercoated when I bought it used. I undercoated it for a few years but then replaced fenders, doors and quarter-panels, and I was lucky to find a used '92 bed that came from the south. I trapped myself and got the body done to go along with the rebuilt engine, TX, front-end etc. The bodywork cost about the same as I originally paid for the truck. With all the work done, the total bills would come pretty close to a new truck. But you know, the '89 is going strong and I don't have the problem that owners of new trucks seem to have. I like my old truck.

I'm not going to be too helpful here. There was a discussion here a few months ago about the same problem, but I can't remember the subject title for a search or even which tractor/loader it was. The conclusion was that the owner ended up taking the cylinder to a dealer because a special tool was needed to get the shaft out of the cylinder.

I cleared up some intermittent lighting and gauge problems on my Ford by cleaning the fuse holder contacts and fuse ends. I also would have been checking and cleaning ground contacts at the same time so it's hard to know exactly what fixed the problems.

I'm happy that Woz felt he got some good from this discussion. I did as well, but I hope we're not quite ready to wrap it yet.

I'm still curious about the possible differences between the best number of cylinders for gas and for diesel engines. I'm starting from wondering if the characteristic knock of diesels makes any difference, or why diesels have problems with coolant cavitation while I haven't heard of the problem in gas engines.

So, I'm wondering if there's something about diesels that produces characteristic vibration that makes for example 3-cyl good for diesels but not for gas?

I posted a basic sound spectrum curve I measured on my Ford at PTO rpm awhile back. I recall thinking that I expected to find the ' diesel knock' in several spikes on the curve but was surprised to find a fairly flat (around 90 or 95db at the seat and under a canopy).

I guess I’d expect gas engines to have a similar curve, but maybe not as noisy, so maybe 'characteristic vibrations' isn't a good explanation for why 3 cylinders may be good for diesels. Of course, there may be spikes in the sound that my fairly broad 2/3rd-octave spectrum analyzer on slow wouldn't pick up. Suppose I could measure my Ford ½-ton as well and maybe carry on to my chain-saw for a 2-cycle comparison., but then I’ve already trashed my measurement as possible inadequate so why bother? I’m still curious about what it is about a diesel that might make a difference.

I don't know Yanmars, but a few tractors have access to the bell-housing. The clutch can be seen and minor work on a clutch can be done without splitting the tractor.

In absence of an access cover, about the only thing that can be done is to see if the pedal actually moves the linkage to where it enters the cases.

I'm with Peters that it sounds more like a broken pressure plate--forks or springs etc. It seems doubtful that adjustment alone could bring a pedal that is completely on the floor back to about 3/4" free-play at the top, which is a common adjustment spec. I’m curious if there is power to the wheels or not. I don’t suppose the question would make much difference if the tractor has to be split, but it would help indicate exactly what is broken. The entire clutch usually is replaced if a tractor is split, and there may be other repairs such as the shift rails that might also be good to do at the same time

However, I have heard of the linkage coming off the throw-out bearing on cars. That's something that could be fixed if there's access to the bell-housing.

In addition to Art's comment, I'd notice if the relief valve opens when the dump valve is operated. I'm thinking that a snap could have been a part on the loader that might be binding the curl and preventing movement. Some types of valve problems, connections or obstructions also would open the relief valve.

I'd also notice if the 3ph stops working when the curl valve is worked. On many systems, it's normal that the 3ph won't lift when any loader valve is active. If the 3ph continues to lift, we'll have more information to work with if you can't get it working.

I believe that a Russian tractor, Belarus or something like that, has a hitch that produces down-pressure. That's the only one I've heard of.

I didn't think that pushing down on a plow, even if the draft did decrease, would be a great idea for plowing. It seems doubtful that the hitch could react precisely enough to keep down-pressure from unloading the rear wheels. Guess I've got to go back to my repair manual one of these mornings to sort out their description and figure out why it sounds like a double acting cylinder.

Another of these 'how does it work ' things I'm trying to figure is the position control lever on a draft control hitch. I believe that it limits how high the draft control hitch can raise when lift is triggered. I haven't nailed down the idea, but I imagine that the hitch goes into a passive mode at the position control level where it can float up like a position control hitch. Having a plow held down by the hitch sounds like a bad idea.

As soon as I heard the ‘constant draft idea’ sometime ago, it worked far better for me than the ‘constant depth’ idea I heard earlier or the ‘lifts over hard spots’ idea I heard even earlier.

Agreed, on the new thing, but I am still weighing options. But I think it was the 1200 cc engine that appeared in the 62-65 era Datsun Bluebird and PL 410 series. I just missed it. My 1966 PL 411 had a slightly larger (but no less plagiarized) 1300 cc engine. In the process they increased the horsepower from a miserly 60 to an incredible 67 HP.
Along the same lines……. The early Toyota Landcruiser engine was a licensed knock-off of the 235 straight six right out of the 55-56 Chevy. And the early Corona’s had a two speed automatic that was a scaled down power glide. My wife had a 69 model. The transmission was just about the only part of the car that didn’t give her any trouble.
Peters, It must be a sign of some sort. As I am typing this a whole pack of Kioti’s starting howling down by the road. Hmmmm……

have you done a front blade on a X595? I have one ordered to do snow, but am a little uncertain about the choice over a rear 60" blade. I have used a JD45-72" blade with JD4700 to plow snow, which worked very well.

just had my 790 4X4 with 419 fel and r4 tires delivered last week. WOW, what a machine. i have been brush hogging for the last 3 days. moving limbs with the fel and moving on. thanks to the excellent help from the articles on the board i think i have made a great choice for my 18 acres.

I was surfing the net for backhoe info for my B-2150hst and come across this backhoe called a "Prairie Dog Digger", 7.5 feet at 2 foot bottom and 90 inches deep total digging depth, so I called the phone number since it was in my area code. It is assembled 6 miles from my house in Holly, Michigan. WOW!!!!! ALL the power and hydro speed in the world. The dealer had it attached to a Ford Jubilee running at 1200 rpm with a pto pump. This heavy duty bad boy 3 point backhoe has Double hydro cylinders on the boom, 3/8 thick plate metal welded and makes Woods and BushHog at 1500 bucks more look like a tinker toys. Guess what the price is guys? 3895.00 with your hydrolics and 495.00 extra for a pto pump model. That includes your choice of buckets 8, 12,or 18inch. This brute weighs in at 1,057 pounds without bucket and is rated for tractors between 20-40 hp. Dipperstick digging force at 2231 lbs with bucket digging force at 3100 lbs. Hey Ed,

The Engine Technical Manual will give you the specs you need for valve adjustment. There is another manual for the trans. These, if you are fairly adept at mechanics, will guide you to the light.

The FOS (Fundamentals of Service) can also be of great help. They explain theory, and procedures outlined in the technical manual, only in greater detail.

For example. he FOS manual, may help you diagnose Hyd system problems because it will explain theory of operation. At the same time, it would also explain how to test relief valves. You would use the FOS manual, to determine you had weak relief valve, the tech manual to find the specs for the relief valve and the procedure for removal, the FOS manual to show you how to run a test on the valve.

The FOS manuals a very broad, and not always model specific. But they outline individual procedures that are used in a varity of situations.

we have a full set at our dealership, but on the newer models, They now call them testing and diagnostic manuals.

I'd just get the tech manuals. If you still have some questions. then get the FOS books.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was going to try as you suggested taking the cable out from the tach head. I'm going to see my dealer first to make sure if the cable's hanging on by a thread that the connection to the engine is not in danger of dropping any gear or drive mechanism into the engine.

Peters: Thanks for the refresher. Of course, I may never have had it completely right even way back then. I forgot the Elan replaced the Elite and came before the Europa. I guess something called Lotus would be a good match for Malaysia, but something called a Tiger might be ever better. Seems like I confused my Alpines and Tigers. Probably inexcusable since I don't suppose you really find too many tigers in alpine areas.

I never knew what happened to Lotus. The last I heard about Aston-Martin was that the company had to scrap hand-built production. They probably didn't survive an assembly line. One of my regrets is that I didn't buy a Jag 3.2 Sedan on a used car lot in Biloxi in 1963 when I was stationed there. I think the price was $650, but I never looked seriously enough to tell the car's condition. Take home pay was $32/per mouth, or payday I can't remember which didn’t do much for car buying of any kind.
