Ed, Congratulations and welcome to the wonderful world of tractor ownership. You will be amazed an how useful (and just plain fun to use) they are. You are new to tractors, so go slow, and take your time with it. Read the manual from cover to cover, including all the safety warnings.

A few suggestions for your consideration:

1) Check with the previous owner and get the maintenance records if he still has them (he may not if he has done it himself, which is common). In any event, find out if the 500 hour maintainable (the details are in your owners manual) has been done. If not, get the materials and do it your self. Then I'd review the owners manual and check over the items mentioned at other maintainable intervals. Check the air cleaner, change the engine oil and filter, look at the fuel filter and see if their is any sediment in it, check the radiator coolant level in the catch tank, remove and clean the radiator pre screen, etc. It will be a good way to get more familiar with your new tool. It will also baseline the fluids and filters so you can establish a good maintainable routine.

2) Read the discussion "subject: counter weight" that is on this board. It is really important for safety and performance reasons to properly counterweight the tractor before using it with the loader. The easiest way to get some initial counterweight is to fill the rear tires with fluid - this is described in the owners manual and probably has already been done, but it is a very good idea to check that it has been done. If it hasn't, do it. You can buy an attachment for a garden hose that will let you do it your self. Its not difficult. The JD dealer put the fluid in the rear tires of my 770, I filled the tires of my 2600 myself.

3) One very important safety rule. Never, ever, get off the tractor with out locking the brakes. Do it every time, it will get to be a habit, a very good habit.

You have an excellent machine. It will last a long time, and do a lot of very useful work for your. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine.

Speaking of Kubota’s…………… I spoke with my brother in Alaska today and remembered to ask him how his tractor was doing. He has a Kubota 2250 that he bought new in 1988 or so. It has never spent a day in the garage and the winters there go –40 or better. He uses it to blow/plow the huge snowdrifts he gets in the upper north fork of his Eagle River Valley home. In the summer he uses it to rearrange his boulders and do some light Ag work. He has about 1800 hours on the clock now and is fastidious about his oil and fluid changes.
I asked him if he has had any major problems with it and he said yes, a couple of years ago one of the rear tires went flat.

Sounds like you can do this w/ what you have, although as Peters said a box blade might help.

when you dig out for the path, dig down about 2-3", and then fill w/ the limestone screenings.

When you dig for the path, try not to disturb the edges, go for a clean cut. this will help better define and stabalize the path.

Also, after you spread the screenings, water them until the surface is a little moist - then compact. You can use your loader, or try using a lawn roller if someone else has one. The screenings compact nicer if the a a little moist - just add a little at first, too wet seems to be worse than dry.

Also, it might be just my technique, but I find it better to work the dust, let it settle, then come back later - sometimes the more I work it the worse it gets.

The OEM or name game is an interesting thing.
For example we all know Interstate batteries, but Interstate only markets batteries. There are only a few manufactures in the US. The big 4 are Exide, JCI, Delco and GNB. East Penn manufacturing, Dekka is smaller and there are a couple of other smaller players.
In the past few years some marketers such as Interstate and Sear Die hard have been burned buying the lowest cost battery.
I am not sure that I would by bulk oil motor based on price either. This is something likely to happen if you buy the OEM material. Years ago I worked on OMC products. We sold the OMC oil and the exact some oil from the manufacture. The oil companies was something like a dollar a quart less.
It is interesting to note that the opposite is often true at Wally World, the amusement park of the south. The sams or Walmart branded product is generally less than the same product in the manufactures label.

The other option would ne to move up to the TC40D which would have enough power for most balers. When I looked at them I don't believe there was much difference in price.

I've owned a lot of pickup trucks including Ford (T444 Navistar), Chevy (6.5 turbo diesel), Dodge 1 ton Diesel, and two Dodge Cummins 2500s. All the dodge/Cummins have had manual transmissions. The two I still have are a 2001 2500 QC 6 spd with HO Cummins, 4.10 axle (which is at college with the youngest daughter), and a 1999 3500 QC with the Cummins, 5 spd, and 3.55 axle.

The 3500 gets 19.6 mpg unloaded, day in and day out. Pulling the 3 horse sooner gooseneck horse trailer loaded it gets around 15 mpg. I also have a 10,400 lb GVW flat bed rear pull trailer for hauling my toys (Ford 2600, JD 770, Toyota 2FG20 fork lift, IHI G70EX excavator). The forklift takes the trailer up to 10,300 lbs. With the fork lift as cargo, the truck will effortlessly climb the 14 FWY grade out of Santa Clarita to the Escondido summit in Acton (elevation 3258 feet) at 60 mph in 4th gear with the cruise control set and not have any problem when its 105F outside.

Someone may, someday, put a better, longer lasting, more reliable, more fuel efficient engine in a mass produced Pickup Truck than the 5.9 liter Cummins, but near as I can tell they haven't done it yet. I've personally seen 4 of them that were over half a million miles with only a valve job at 350K. That engine is simply amazing. It will last longer than you can stand to look at the truck, and then some.

The rest of the truck is about equivalent in quality to the Chevy or Ford. They are all at best only mediocre in quality - but then they are competing with each other so one would probably expect that. The Cummins engine stands out from the Duramax and PowerStroke.

It is also probably significant that I've had 3 of the Dodges, but only one of either the Chevy or Ford. I've also owned a Ford F350 Crew Cab Dually with a 460 gas engine in it. Very nice truck, pull about any load you could hook to it, but the milage was really awful - worse than that even.

Did I mention I think the Dodge Cummins with manual transmission is an awsome toy towing machine?

Unless you have a Ingersoll dealer nearby, I would look at JD or Kubota say the BX22. I had an older Ingersoll , 446, and found the parts expensive and because dealers are far and few between, you may not get a good deal. Also implements will only be available from Ingersoll, which means if you want to add say a rototiller you will have to use the Ingersoll version at a higher $$$. A Kubota BX22 is about $16,500 with a diesel engine, 60" mid mount mower, and a 3 pt hitch.

Totally unballasted, expect for me. I reckon a safe ballast for that little 300# load would have been 600#. So a full set of wheel weights plus 400# (or a box scraper) on the 3ph would have done the job.

Just a short note as to the Kubota hitches. On the BX that hitch we call a 1N or narrow hitch utilizing catO width with Cat1 pins, much like the 2N class which is a Cat1 width with cat2 pins. The only other model is there specialty tractor the 8200N model which is a tractor designed for narrow applications with need for high horsepower. This tractor uses cat2 pins on cat1 width due to the fact the tractor is only 48" wide and has 82 horsepower.

I mow on hills with R4's and the 4wd is the only way to keep the tractor from sliding on even a mild slope. If you want to keep from digging up the ground during slides, you simply keep in 4wd. On steeper slopes in 2wd, there isn't much you can do in a slide except ride it all the way down.

I just spent the day on my X595. It does its thing better than any machine i've had previously. And you know, it doesn't bother me a bit that JD won't put a backhoe on it.
Regards your Q on deck width, the 54" extends approx 6" beyond the left wheels and 2-3" beyond the right wheels. I mowed around 125 walnut saplings without a problem. I chose the 54" because I have some tight places to mow, plus the terrain isn't flat -- a wider deck will have trouble giving an even cut on rolling ground.
One downer -- my dealer gave me the prices on some of JD's implements and add-on's for the X4--'s and X5--'s. Wow.

I also pull alot of trailers with mine. I do have a K&N air filter. What does the Bora headers cost? I like a quiet work horse, alittle rummble is ok but Iam not a kid anymore. With the headers didi it increase MPG any?

HELP !!I need to sell my boat to buy a new tractor. 99 Polarkraft 1860 18' alum. bass boat with '00 Yamaha F80 4 stroke. Still under warranty until Dec. 02. WJS, I've never tried to switch the brackets that you are in need of. Basically I'd say it might not work. There is an extra mounting kit that needs to be ordered with the 92 series for that tractor so I would say they might not fit at all.
